What Exactly Are Pudding Shots?
Pudding shots are a popular type of alcoholic dessert that takes the creamy, comforting texture of pudding and infuses it with your favorite spirits. They’re typically made by combining instant pudding mix with a chosen alcohol and a dairy base, then chilled until set. While many flavors of pudding can be used, cheesecake pudding offers a wonderfully rich and decadent base that pairs exceptionally well with a variety of liquors. These delightful treats are versatile enough to be served as a unique dessert course, a fun party favor, or a celebratory adult snack, adding a playful twist to any gathering.
For your upcoming 4th of July festivities, these Red, White, and Blue Cheesecake Pudding Shots offer a visually stunning and incredibly tasty way to celebrate. They bring together the luscious taste of cheesecake, the subtle warmth of vodka, and the iconic patriotic colors, making them an unforgettable highlight of your summer holiday menu.

Cheesecake Pudding Shots: A Decadent Delight

Cheesecake pudding shots stand out from other variations due to their incredibly smooth, rich, and slightly tangy flavor profile that mimics a classic cheesecake. This makes them a sophisticated yet approachable dessert option for adult parties. The instant cheesecake pudding mix does most of the heavy lifting, ensuring a consistent and delicious base every time. When combined with alcohol, the result is a creamy, boozy treat that’s far more interesting than a simple jello shot.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pudding Shots
How Long Do Pudding Shots Last in the Refrigerator?
Pudding shots are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. However, the alcohol content can cause the pudding to become less firm over time. For optimal texture and presentation, it’s generally recommended to consume them within a week or two of preparation. If you’re making them ahead, be aware that longer storage might result in a softer consistency, potentially requiring a gentle stir before serving, which could disturb any layered designs. This is an important consideration if you plan to create visually appealing layered shots.
Do Pudding Shots Need to Be Served Cold?
Absolutely! Pudding shots are undeniably at their best when served chilled. The cold temperature enhances their creamy texture and ensures a refreshing experience, especially important for alcoholic treats. Keep them in the refrigerator right up until you are ready to serve. If you’re hosting an outdoor party or in a warm environment, consider placing the shot glasses in a bucket of ice. This simple trick will help maintain their cool temperature and delightful consistency for as long as possible, preventing them from becoming too soft or runny.

How Strong Are Pudding Shots?
The strength of pudding shots is usually quite moderate, making them a fun and manageable adult treat rather than an overpoweringly boozy one. In this recipe, for example, one cup of alcohol is distributed among approximately 12 shots, meaning each shot contains less than one ounce of alcohol. This ensures a pleasant flavor balance where the richness of the cheesecake pudding still shines through. It’s crucial not to increase the amount of alcohol beyond what the recipe suggests. Adding too much alcohol will significantly alter the pudding’s ability to set properly, making it runny and preventing the beautiful layers from holding their shape. Stick to the recommended proportions for perfect consistency and enjoyable strength.
What Is The Best Alcohol To Use For Pudding Shots?
When it comes to choosing alcohol for pudding shots, vodka is by far the most popular choice, and for good reason. Its neutral flavor allows the delicious pudding base to be the star without any competing tastes. However, rum and whiskey are also common and excellent options, especially if you want to add a specific flavor profile. For instance, dark rum can complement chocolate or vanilla pudding beautifully, while spiced rum could add warmth to a pumpkin spice pudding shot. Experiment with different spirits to discover your favorite combinations, always keeping in mind that the alcohol’s flavor should enhance, not overpower, the pudding.
What Is Pudding Made Of?
At its core, pudding is a creamy, sweet dessert typically made by combining milk or cream, sugar, and a thickening agent like flour, cornstarch, or eggs. It can be prepared in countless flavors, from classic chocolate and vanilla to more adventurous options like banana or pistachio. The versatility of pudding makes it a beloved dessert across cultures. Instant pudding mixes, like the cheesecake one used in this recipe, simplify the process significantly, allowing you to create smooth, delicious pudding quickly and easily by simply whisking it with milk or a milk alternative.
Crafting Vodka Pudding Shots

How Do You Eat a Pudding Shot?
Unlike Jell-O shots, which can often be slurped or squeezed directly into your mouth, pudding shots require a spoon for proper enjoyment. Their creamy, rich consistency means they won’t hold a firm shape enough to be consumed in one solid piece from the glass. Serving them with small spoons allows your guests to savor each delightful bite, appreciating the creamy texture and layered flavors. This also helps prevent any mess, ensuring a more elegant and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Why Are My Pudding Shots Runny?
If your pudding shots turn out runny, there are a couple of common culprits. Firstly, the alcohol proof might be too high. Using alcohol with 80-proof or higher can sometimes prevent the pudding from setting properly due to the stronger alcohol content interfering with the thickening process. Secondly, incorrect ingredient ratios are a frequent issue. If you’ve added too much alcohol relative to the pudding mix, it simply won’t thicken adequately. To remedy a runny batch, try incorporating about 8 ounces of whipped cream or a cream topping into the mixture before chilling. This can help stabilize the consistency and allow it to set.

Can You Make Instant Pudding with Water Instead of Milk?
While instant pudding mixes are typically designed to be made with milk for optimal creaminess and setting, you can indeed use water as an alternative if you don’t have milk or a milk substitute on hand. However, be aware that using water will result in a pudding with a noticeably thinner consistency and a less rich flavor. For pudding shots, where a thicker, creamier texture is desirable for holding layers, milk or a dairy alternative like half and half (as used in this recipe) is strongly recommended over water.
Can You Freeze Pudding with Alcohol in It?
Yes, pudding shots can be frozen, which is a great option for long-term storage or for a frosty treat! However, due to the alcohol content, they won’t freeze completely solid. The alcohol acts as an antifreeze, resulting in a softer, almost slushy-like consistency rather than a hard freeze. You can store pudding shots in the freezer for up to 2 months. Just remember that the texture will be different from their refrigerated counterparts – think of them as a delightful, boozy slushie!

Can You Use Heavy Cream When Making Instant Pudding?
Absolutely! Using heavy cream instead of regular milk in instant pudding can create an even richer, more luxurious, and denser pudding. This is an excellent technique if you’re aiming for an exceptionally thick and creamy consistency, which can be beneficial for pudding shots to ensure the layers hold well. Simply prepare the instant pudding according to the package directions, but substitute the milk with heavy cream. After thoroughly combining the pudding mix and heavy cream, chill it for a few minutes before mixing again until it reaches your desired thick and velvety consistency. This adjustment not only enhances the texture but also significantly improves the overall taste of the pudding mix.
Pro Tips for Flawless Layered Pudding Shots
- Maintain Consistency: Avoid adding extra vodka to the mixture, as this will thin the pudding too much. For perfectly distinct layers, a slightly thicker consistency is crucial to prevent the colors from bleeding into each other.
- Don’t Fear the Chunks: When you first start mixing the vodka into the pudding, it might appear a bit chunky. This is entirely normal! Simply continue mixing, and it will smooth out into a creamy consistency.
- Mastering the Frosting Bag: When using a frosting bag for layering, be mindful that pudding is thinner than frosting. Tilt the bag to the side between layers to prevent the mixture from escaping prematurely from the tip. If you prefer, an injector can also be used, though some pudding chunks might occasionally cause blockages.
- Achieve Smooth Layers: After adding each colored layer to the shot glass, gently tap the glass lightly on the counter. This helps to flatten the pudding and create a smoother, more even surface for the next layer, resulting in visually appealing, well-defined stripes.
- The Power of Half and Half: Using half and half is key for this recipe, as its slightly thicker consistency is ideal. Avoid heavy whipping cream, as it can make the pudding too thick and difficult to layer. Half and half strikes the perfect balance.
- Flavor Swaps: If cheesecake isn’t your preferred flavor, feel free to substitute with vanilla pudding or another instant pudding flavor of your choice.
- Kid-Friendly Option: To make these treats suitable for children, simply prepare the pudding as directed on the box using milk and skip the vodka entirely. Follow the remaining steps for layering and garnishing for a fun, non-alcoholic version!

Pudding Shots
These Pudding Shots are made with cheesecake pudding, a shot of vodka, and tinted in red, white, and blue for the summer holidays! Easy to make and a fun treat for adult parties -make them for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day too!
Course: Dessert
Servings: 12 shots
Prep Time: 10 mins
Chill Time: 2 hrs
Total Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Pin Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 boxes instant cheesecake pudding (3 ounces each)
- 2 cups half and half
- 1 cup vodka
- Red food dye
- Blue food dye
- Whipped cream (optional garnish)
- Patriotic sprinkles (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Add the pudding and half and half to a large mixing bowl.
- Beat with the mixer until thickened.
- Add the vodka and beat again until smooth and thickened.
- Divide the pudding into thirds, adding the portions to three separate bowls.
- In one bowl, add the blue food coloring and mix, adding more and mixing until the desired color is reached. Mix until no color streaks appear.
- Repeat the same steps for the red with one of the other bowls. Leave the third one without color.
- Place the mixtures in the fridge until thickened.
- Add the red pudding to the frosting bag and fill each shot glass a third full.
- Next, do the same thing with the uncolored pudding, and end with the blue pudding.
- Using the frosting bag one more time, add a dollop of whipped cream to the top of each shot and add some sprinkles.
Notes
- Do not add more vodka to the mixture or it will make it too thin. For this pudding shot, you want it to remain a little thicker so the colors don’t mix.
- When you start to mix the vodka into the pudding, it will look chunky at first. Just keep mixing, it will smooth out, this is normal.
- When using the frosting bag, be sure to tilt it to the side as the mixture will be thinner and not hold in the frosting bag as well as thick frosting might. It will want to escape out of the frosting tip. So, as long as you keep the bag tilted sideways in between each layer, you should be fine. You can also try using an injector, although some pudding chunks might try and block it.
- Be sure to tap each shot glass lightly on the counter as you add each color. This will flatten it out and make the color layers smoother.
- It’s important to use half and half as it’s a little thicker than normal whole milk. You don’t want to use heavy whipping cream as this will make the pudding too thick. The half and half worked great for this recipe.
- This can also be made with vanilla pudding if you don’t care for cheesecake flavor.
- If you’re wanting to make these safe for kids, simply prepare the pudding as directed on the box and follow the rest of the steps. Just skip the vodka.
Equipment
- 12 2-ounce shot glasses
- Frosting bag and tip (optional)
- Hand mixer or whisk
