Crock Pot Baked Apples with a spoon and ice cream, showcasing a perfect fall dessert.

Is there anything quite as enchanting as the arrival of fall? Here in North Idaho, we experienced one last glorious gasp of summer with a week of ’90s-like temperatures, a final fiery farewell. But then, as if on cue, a refreshing cold front swept in, dropping temperatures into the delightful 60s and 70s. Suddenly, fall wasn’t just ‘in the air’ – it blasted in, bringing with it a sense of peace and beauty that’s truly lovely.

I sincerely hope these mild 70-degree days linger for a while. There’s a precious window during fall when the weather is simply perfect for leaving the windows open, allowing a gentle, cool breeze to drift through the house without being too hot or too cold. It’s this idyllic atmosphere that beckons us towards comforting flavors and hearty dishes.

However, those increasingly chilly nights have definitely shifted my culinary focus into full fall mode. The slow cooker, a true hero of autumnal cooking, is making more frequent appearances throughout the week. And oh, the smells! The wonderful aromas drifting from the kitchen—cinnamon, apples, and the hint of caramel—create an inviting warmth that permeates every corner of the home, transforming it into a haven of coziness.

Soon, I’ll be able to share all the glorious sights of this season from around here, from vibrant foliage to picturesque landscapes. But for now, my focus is on sharing my absolute favorite fall flavors, starting with this easy and incredibly satisfying crock pot dessert.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crock Pot Baked Apples

Delving into a new recipe often brings questions. Here, we address some of the most common inquiries about making these delectable slow cooker baked apples, ensuring you have all the information you need for a successful and enjoyable baking experience.

What kind of apples should I use for baked apples in the crock pot?

Choosing the right apple is crucial for perfect baked apples. While I’m fortunate enough to use apples from trees planted by previous owners on my property (their variety remains a delicious mystery!), most of you will be selecting your apples from a grocery store. The key is to pick apples that hold their shape well during cooking and offer a balance of sweetness and a hint of tartness, making them ideal for a dessert.

When making baked apples, you want varieties with a lower water content and a firm texture. Apples with high water content tend to break down too quickly, resulting in a mushy texture rather than the tender, yet structured, baked apple you’re aiming for. Since this is a dessert, focus on sweeter apples that will caramelize beautifully and complement the crumble topping.

My personal favorite for this recipe is Fuji apples. Their crisp texture and sweet-tart flavor hold up wonderfully in the slow cooker. Other excellent choices include:

  • Honeycrisp: Known for their exceptionally crisp texture and sweet flavor, Honeycrisps are fantastic for baking as they maintain their integrity.
  • Golden Delicious: These apples soften nicely and have a mild, sweet flavor that blends well with cinnamon and caramel.
  • Red Delicious: While often chosen for eating fresh, firmer Red Delicious apples can also work, offering a sweet profile.
  • Granny Smith: If you prefer a tart counterpoint to the sweet crumble and caramel, Granny Smiths are an excellent choice. You might want to slightly increase the sugar in your crumble if using these.
  • Gala: Sweet and aromatic, Gala apples are another reliable option for baked desserts.

Pro Tip: For an extra layer of flavor and texture, consider using a mix of two different apple varieties – perhaps one sweet and one slightly tart – to create a more complex profile in your baked apples.

How to store Crock Pot Baked Apples and keep them fresh

Once you’ve created a batch of these mouth-watering Crock Pot Baked Apples, you’ll want to ensure you can enjoy them again later. Proper storage is key to maintaining their deliciousness and texture.

The good news is that these apples store exceptionally well. After allowing them to cool completely, transfer them to an airtight container. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, they can be frozen for up to two months. When freezing, it’s best to place individual apples on a baking sheet to freeze solid first, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. This prevents them from sticking together.

To Reheat: From the fridge, gently warm them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 10-15 minutes until heated through. If reheating from frozen, thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat as directed for refrigerated apples. You can also reheat directly from frozen in the oven at a slightly lower temperature (275°F / 135°C) for 20-30 minutes, or until warm, ensuring they don’t dry out.

Essential Ingredients for Crock Pot Baked Apples

Creating these heavenly baked apples requires a few simple, wholesome ingredients, many of which you likely already have in your pantry. The magic happens when these components come together to form a sweet, spiced, and crumbly topping that perfectly complements the tender, slow-cooked apples.

  • All-purpose flour: Forms the base of our irresistible crumble topping, providing structure and a tender texture.
  • Brown sugar: Adds a deep, molasses-rich sweetness and a beautiful caramel note to the crumble.
  • Oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats contribute a delightful chewiness and hearty texture to the topping, enhancing the crumble experience.
  • Granulated sugar: Provides additional sweetness and helps create a crispier texture in the crumble.
  • Butter – chilled & cubed: Cold butter is essential for a perfectly crumbly topping. It creates pockets of steam during baking, resulting in a tender, flaky streusel.
  • Cinnamon: The star spice of fall! Cinnamon infuses the apples and crumble with its signature warm, inviting aroma and flavor.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances all the other flavors in the crumble.
  • Apples: The foundation of our dessert! Choose firm, sweet-tart varieties that hold their shape well when cooked.

How to Make Delicious Crock Pot Baked Apples – Step-by-Step Guide

Preparing these slow cooker baked apples is incredibly straightforward, promising a rewarding and fragrant experience. Follow these detailed steps to create a dessert that will impress and delight.

  1. Prepare the Crumble Topping: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, both brown and granulated sugars, oats, chilled and cubed butter, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. These ingredients form the heart of our flavorful crumble.
  2. Form the Crumble Mixture: Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or even your fingertips, work the cold butter into the dry ingredients. Continue until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining. This ensures a delightful, crumbly texture. Set this mixture aside.
  3. Prepare the Apples: Begin by thoroughly washing your chosen apples under cool running water. Then, carefully cut off the top stem end of each apple.
  4. Core and Hollow the Apples: Using a melon baller, a small spoon, or a paring knife, spoon out the core and some of the inner flesh from the center of each apple. The goal is to create a sturdy “bowl” within the apple, large enough to hold a generous amount of your crumble mixture, but leaving enough apple flesh for structure.
  5. Fill and Arrange: Generously fill each hollowed apple with the prepared crumble mixture. Don’t be shy – pack it in! Once filled, carefully place the apples upright inside your slow cooker insert.
  6. Slow Cook to Perfection: Cover your crock pot and cook on low for 2 to 2.5 hours. The cooking time can vary slightly depending on the size and variety of your apples and the specific heat of your slow cooker. The apples are ready when they are tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork but still hold their shape beautifully and are not falling apart.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Once cooked, carefully remove the baked apples from the crock pot. Serve them warm, topped with a luxurious scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream. For an extra touch of indulgence, I highly recommend adding a generous drizzle of warm caramel sauce!

Air Fryer Baked Apples: A Quick Alternative

In a rush but still craving that warm, comforting baked apple experience? Your air fryer comes to the rescue! This method offers a fantastic, quicker alternative to the slow cooker, delivering tender, flavorful baked apples in a fraction of the time.

To make these apples (or even peaches!) in the air fryer, prepare them by washing, topping, and coring as described above. Then, simply place them in your air fryer basket. Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes. After the initial cook, carefully remove the basket, sprinkle your delicious crumble topping into each hollowed apple. Return to the air fryer and cook for another 5-10 minutes, or until the apples are perfectly tender and the crumble topping is golden and crisp. The exact time will depend on your apple size and air fryer model, so keep an eye on them!

Can I use this recipe to make baked peaches instead? Absolutely!

This versatile recipe isn’t just for apples! It adapts beautifully to other fruits, and baked peaches are a particularly delightful variation. When peaches are in season, this is a must-try. The tender, juicy peaches combined with a sweet crumble are simply irresistible.

Yes, you can absolutely use this exact method for baked peaches! Simply prepare your peaches by halving and pitting them. For the topping, sprinkle each peach half with a pinch of crushed graham cracker crumbs (which add a wonderful texture and flavor profile that complements peaches), a dash of cinnamon, a small pat of butter, and a spoonful of brown sugar. Place them in your slow cooker and cook on low for the same amount of time as the apples, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, until they are soft and tender but still hold their shape. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a truly unforgettable summer or fall treat!

Indeed, Crock Pot Baked Apples are the perfect fall treat – simple to make, wonderfully aromatic, and bursting with the flavors of the season. They truly embody the warmth and comfort we all crave as the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp.

Which Slow Cooker Do You Recommend?

Having prepared countless slow cooker recipes over the years, I’ve amassed a small collection of slow cookers. Each serves its purpose, but for this particular recipe, I have a couple of go-to recommendations:

For smaller batches or when cooking for fewer people, I often reach for my smaller 3-quart slow cooker. It’s perfect for half recipes or when you just want a few baked apples.

However, the one I use most frequently and is ideally suited for this specific recipe, especially when making a full batch, is this standard, no-frills 6-quart slow cooker. It’s reliable, easy to clean, and consistently delivers excellent results for a wide range of dishes, including these delightful baked apples.
