Peanut Butter & Jelly Roll-Ups: The Ultimate Easy & Fun Back to School Lunch Idea
As the lazy days of summer begin to fade, the frantic energy of the back-to-school season quickly takes its place. For many families, including ours, summer felt exceptionally busy this year. The thought of diving back into strict school schedules and the daily grind of packing lunches can feel incredibly overwhelming. But what if I told you that school lunches don’t have to be a source of stress? With a little creativity, you can transform a classic into an exciting, easy-to-make meal that kids will adore. That’s why I’m thrilled to share one of our favorite simple back-to-school lunch ideas: these delightful Peanut Butter & Jelly Roll-Ups.

The traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich holds a special place in my heart. It was a staple throughout my childhood, and I’ve always been drawn to that irresistible balance of salty and sweet. While a classic PB&J is undeniably quick and convenient, I wanted to inject a bit more fun and novelty into our lunch routine. The goal was to create something that would not only be easy for me to prepare but also exciting enough to banish any lunchbox boredom, especially during the busy school week.
My journey to crafting these perfect roll-ups always begins with a trip to Walmart. Stocking up on essential ingredients like Jif® Natural Peanut Butter Spread and Smucker’s® Natural Strawberry Fruit Spread is a must. For my family, Jif and Smucker’s are the undisputed go-to brands for achieving that quintessential PB&J flavor. I rely on them not just for their exceptional taste that the whole family loves, but also for their consistent quality ingredients. Knowing I’m using products I trust makes all the difference when preparing meals for my kids.

Even though my children are older now and often take pride in packing their own lunches, I still love to prepare these roll-ups ahead of time. This ensures they have a delicious, ready-to-grab option on even the most hectic mornings. Peanut butter and jelly has remained a consistent favorite with all my kids since they were toddlers. This delightful combination of creamy peanut butter and sweet fruit spread has been their most requested lunch item year after year, which is why it continues to be our ultimate “go-to.” These roll-ups pack all the essential energy and satisfying flavor they need to power through their school day, keeping them fueled and happy until dinner.
Simple Steps to Perfect Peanut Butter & Jelly Roll-Ups
Creating these roll-ups is surprisingly simple and a great activity to involve the kids in. First, you’ll need a clean, flat surface and a rolling pin. Take each slice of bread and roll it out as flat as possible. This step is crucial, as it makes the bread pliable enough to roll without cracking. Once flattened, carefully trim off the crusts to create a neat, square shape. Don’t throw those crusts away! I always save them to toast later and turn into homemade croutons, adding another layer of no-waste cooking to our routine.

Now for the delicious fillings. Using a knife, carefully spread Jif Natural Peanut Butter along two of the outer edges of your flattened bread slice. Next, generously apply Smucker’s Natural Strawberry Fruit Spread down the middle, perfectly nestled between the strips of peanut butter. This strategic placement ensures a delightful balance of flavors in every bite. Here’s where the fun twist comes in: sprinkle some of your favorite salty potato chips directly on top of the fruit spread. This unexpected addition adds a fantastic crunch and a wonderful salty contrast that elevates the roll-up beyond a basic sandwich.
Starting from one of the peanut butter-lined edges, gently but firmly roll the bread slice into a tight log. As you roll, the potato chips will naturally crunch up, embedding themselves within the peanut butter and jelly layers. This creates an exciting texture contrast that kids absolutely adore. Once rolled, you have two options: enjoy it as a whole, satisfying roll, or for easier eating and portion control, slice it into charming bite-sized pieces. These smaller portions are especially great for little hands and make them an ideal addition to any school lunchbox or as a quick snack.
Your Questions Answered: Tips & Tricks for Perfect PB&J Roll-Ups

We’ve received quite a few questions about these unique roll-ups, and I’m happy to share our insights to help you make them perfectly every time.
Why is it important to flatten the bread first?
Flattening the bread is a critical step because it removes air and compresses the bread, making it much more pliable. This thinness allows the bread to roll up tightly and without cracking, creating a compact and easy-to-eat roll-up that holds its shape. Without flattening, the bread would be too thick and prone to breaking.
What type of potato chips work best for this recipe?
For the best texture and crunch, I highly recommend using thin, crispy potato chips. Brands that offer a classic, thinly sliced chip work wonderfully. Thicker chips or those with deep ridges don’t crumble as easily during the rolling process, which can make the roll-ups more difficult to form evenly and might result in a less satisfying crunch. The goal is to have small, crunchy pieces distributed throughout the filling.
Are there any alternatives to using traditional bread for this recipe?
Absolutely! If you’re looking to mix things up or prefer an alternative to bread, flour tortillas are an excellent substitute. When using tortillas, the roll-ups tend to be much larger, so we usually cut them into smaller, more manageable pieces once rolled. This makes them perfect for little hands and prevents any mess. Tortillas also offer a slightly different chew and are a great way to add variety to lunchboxes.
What else could I use instead of potato chips for added texture or flavor?
This is a fantastic question and opens up a world of customization! While we love chips because my mom always included them in my sandwiches growing up, you can certainly experiment. Sliced bananas are a popular choice, offering a creamy sweetness that pairs beautifully with peanut butter. Other soft fruits like thinly sliced strawberries or a few raspberries can also work. However, do note that ingredients that don’t easily crumble or bend (like very firm fruit or nuts) might make the roll-ups less tight and harder to form. The key is to choose add-ins that complement the soft texture of the peanut butter and jelly while adding a delightful element.
