Common Questions About Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake
Is it necessary to macerate the strawberries?
Yes, macerating the strawberries is a crucial step for optimal flavor and texture. This process involves tossing the sliced or chopped strawberries with sugar and allowing them to sit. As they rest, the sugar draws out their natural juices, making them softer and creating a luscious, sweet syrup. This intensified strawberry flavor and accompanying syrup perfectly complement the richness of the shortcake biscuits and the creamy whipped topping, elevating the entire dessert experience.
Do I need to preheat my air fryer before cooking the biscuits?
While it’s not strictly necessary to preheat your air fryer for this recipe, doing so can certainly help. Preheating ensures a more consistent temperature from the moment the biscuits enter the basket, leading to more even cooking and a beautiful, uniform golden-brown finish. If you’re short on time, skipping the preheat won’t ruin the recipe, but a few minutes of preheating can make a noticeable difference in the final texture and appearance of your biscuits.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of canned whipped topping?
Absolutely! Using homemade whipped cream is an excellent choice for this Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake, offering a more natural and customizable option. Homemade whipped cream often boasts a richer flavor and a lighter, airier texture compared to its canned counterpart. You can easily adjust the sweetness to your liking and even add a touch of vanilla extract or other flavorings to enhance its profile. Simply whisk heavy cream with a bit of powdered sugar until soft peaks form for a truly gourmet touch.
Storage Tips for Your Strawberry Shortcake
This classic dessert, prepared with an innovative air fryer twist, is so incredibly popular that you might find yourself without any leftovers! However, just in case you do manage to save a few servings, here are some essential tips for proper storage to maintain their deliciousness.
Refrigerator Storage
Assembled Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcakes are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. To maintain their freshness and prevent them from drying out or absorbing other odors, place them in an airtight container. Be mindful that the biscuits may soften slightly over time, and the whipped topping can begin to weep. For the best experience, assemble them just before serving or store components separately and combine right before eating.
Freezer Storage
Freezing assembled shortcakes is generally not recommended. The delicate texture of the whipped topping tends to break down upon thawing, becoming watery, and the macerated fruit can also lose its appealing consistency. However, you can successfully freeze the cooked shortcake biscuits. Allow them to cool completely, then store them in an airtight container or a heavy-duty freezer bag for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw the biscuits at room temperature for an hour or two before slicing and assembling your fresh shortcakes with new strawberries and whipped topping.

Expert Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake
These homemade shortcakes consistently make my mouth water, and the air fryer truly works wonders in achieving their perfect texture. Follow these expert tips for an even more outstanding result every time!
- Space Your Biscuits: For uniform cooking and optimal browning, ensure that the biscuits are not touching each other in the air fryer basket. Overcrowding can lead to unevenly cooked or soggy spots, as the hot air needs to circulate freely around each biscuit. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Adjust Sweetness to Taste: If you prefer a less sweet dessert, feel free to reduce the amount of granulated sugar used to macerate the strawberries. The natural sweetness of ripe strawberries often requires less added sugar, allowing their fresh flavor to truly shine. Taste and adjust as needed.
- Utilize Perforated Parchment Paper: Using air fryer-specific perforated parchment paper is a fantastic tip. It helps prevent a build-up of non-stick cooking spray on your air fryer basket, which can become sticky and difficult to remove over time. This paper also makes cleanup much easier and ensures the biscuits don’t stick to the basket.
- Don’t Overcook: Keep a close eye on your biscuits during the final minutes of cooking. Air fryers can cook quickly, and biscuits can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a blink. A light golden-brown color indicates they are done and will be soft inside.
- Cool Completely: Allow the biscuits to cool completely before cutting them in half and assembling the shortcakes. Warm biscuits can cause the whipped topping to melt too quickly and make the overall dessert messy.
Simple Ingredients for a Superior Shortcake
For the absolute best results and an unforgettable flavor, always use fresh fruit for this recipe. That wonderful, vibrant, sweet strawberry flavor is simply unmatched and truly cannot be beat!
- Fresh Strawberries: Choose ripe, fragrant strawberries for the most intense flavor.
- Granulated Sugar (White Sugar): Essential for macerating the strawberries, drawing out their juices and creating a delightful syrup.
- Refrigerated Biscuits: The secret to this incredibly quick and easy air fryer shortcake. Standard canned biscuits work perfectly.
- Whipped Topping: Whether store-bought or homemade, this adds a creamy, dreamy finishing touch.
These minimal ingredients combine to create a dessert that tastes far more complex than its preparation suggests, proving that sometimes, simple is truly best.

How to Make Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake: Step-by-Step
My kids absolutely adore fresh summer strawberries with sugar, and this recipe delivers exactly that delightful, fresh flavor in a fantastic summer dessert!
- Macerate the Strawberries: Begin by preparing your strawberries. Wash and hull them, then slice or chop them into bite-sized pieces. In a small bowl, combine the prepared strawberries with the granulated sugar. Gently toss them together to ensure the sugar coats all the fruit. Let them sit at room temperature while you prepare and cook the biscuits. The sugar will work its magic, breaking down the strawberries and causing them to soften and release their sweet, natural juices, forming a delicious syrup.
- Prepare the Biscuits for Air Frying: Open your can of refrigerated biscuits. Carefully place them in the air fryer basket. It is crucial to ensure that the biscuits are not touching each other to allow for proper air circulation and even cooking. Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may be able to fit four biscuits at a time. If you have a smaller model or are making more servings, you might need to cook them in two batches.
- Air Fry the Biscuits: Close the air fryer and set the temperature to 330ºF (approximately 165ºC). Cook the biscuits for about 6 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown color and are cooked through. Cooking times can vary slightly based on your air fryer model, so keep an eye on them. Once cooked, carefully remove the biscuits from the air fryer and place them on a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling is essential before assembly to prevent melting the whipped topping.
- Enhance Strawberry Mixture: Once the biscuits are cooling, revisit your macerated strawberries. Give them a good whisk with a fork. You can also gently mash any remaining large lumps of strawberries with the fork if you prefer a smoother, more saucy consistency. This ensures the strawberries are well-coated in their syrup and ready for layering.
- Slice the Biscuits: When the air-fried biscuits have cooled down to room temperature, take a serrated knife and carefully cut each biscuit in half horizontally, much like you would slice a hamburger bun. This creates the two layers for your shortcake.
- Assemble the First Layer: Take the bottom half of a cooled biscuit and place it on your serving plate. Spoon a generous dollop of whipped topping onto this bottom layer, spreading it gently. Follow this with a luscious layer of your prepared strawberry mixture, making sure to include some of that delicious syrup.
- Complete the Shortcake: Carefully place the top half of the biscuit onto the strawberry layer. For an impressive finish, add another spoonful of the strawberry sauce on top of the biscuit lid, letting some of the juices drip down, and then crown it with a final swirl of whipped topping. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Important Notes for Best Results
Achieving the perfect Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake is easier with these additional tips:
Preparing Your Air Fryer Basket: You have a couple of options for preparing your air fryer basket before adding the biscuit dough. You can either lightly grease the basket with a non-stick cooking spray, or, my personal preference, line it with perforated parchment paper specifically designed for air fryers. The parchment paper is highly recommended because, over time, non-stick cooking spray can leave a sticky, difficult-to-remove residue coating on the air fryer basket. Using parchment paper not only prevents sticking but also makes cleanup significantly easier.
Presentation vs. Simplicity: For the most visually appealing presentation, follow the detailed assembly steps outlined in the recipe. Layering the whipped topping and strawberries carefully creates a beautiful, classic shortcake look that’s perfect for impressing guests. However, if you’re in a hurry or simply prefer a more casual approach, don’t hesitate to just toss all the ingredients together in a bowl for a delicious “deconstructed” shortcake. It will taste just as wonderful!

Creative Variations and Delicious Add-Ins for Air Fryer Strawberry Shortcake
The air fryer makes traditional recipes even simpler and more accessible, and this strawberry shortcake is truly one of the best desserts you’ll ever make in it, hands down! Don’t hesitate to get creative with these variations and add-ins to make it uniquely yours:
- Experiment with Berries: While strawberries are classic, substitute them with other fresh berries such as plump blueberries, tart raspberries, succulent blackberries, or any combination of your favorite seasonal fruits. A medley of berries offers a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors and flavors.
- Add a Decadent Drizzle: Elevate your shortcake with an extra layer of sweetness and flavor. Drizzle strawberry syrup, rich chocolate sauce, or a gooey caramel sauce over the whipped topping for an indulgent twist.
- Introduce a Crunchy Element: For added texture and a delightful crunch, sprinkle chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts over the layers. Toasted coconut flakes also make a fantastic addition.
- Flavor Your Whipped Cream: Instead of plain whipped topping, use flavored whipped cream. Vanilla bean paste, almond extract, or even a touch of orange blossom water can transform its taste. You can also infuse the cream with a hint of cinnamon or cardamom.
- Brighten with Citrus Zest: For a refreshing, zesty kick, add a sprinkle of finely grated lemon zest or orange zest to your whipped topping or directly onto the strawberries. This brightens the flavors and adds an aromatic complexity.
- Incorporate Herbs: For a truly gourmet touch, finely chop fresh basil or mint and sprinkle a tiny amount over the strawberries. The herbaceous notes pair surprisingly well with the fruit.

Ingredients
- 1 qt strawberries chopped
- 4 tbsp granulated sugar this can be reduced if you want it less sweet
- 1 can refrigerated biscuits 8 count
Optional Garnish
- whipped topping
Instructions
-
First, we want to macerate the strawberries by combining them with the sugar in a small bowl. Just toss them with the sugar in the bowl and let them sit while you make the biscuits. The sugar will break them down and they will become soft.
-
Place biscuits in the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not touching. I am able to make four at a time.
-
Cook at 330ºF for 6 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and allow them to cool before proceeding.
-
Whisk the strawberries with a fork and mash any remaining large lumps in the mixture.
-
When biscuits are cooled, cut them in half like you would a hamburger bun.
-
On the bottom layer, put whipped topping followed by a layer of strawberry sauce.
-
Place the top of the biscuit on, followed by more strawberry sauce and whipped topping.
Notes
You can either grease the air fryer basket prior to adding the dough, or you can line it with the perforated parchment made for air fryers. The parchment is my preference as non-stick cooking spray leaves a coating that is not removable over time.
For the prettiest presentation, you want to follow the steps laid out here for assembling the dessert. But if you want to just toss it all together in a bowl – that works too.
Equipment
- Air Fryer
