One of the best things about these hand pies is how they solve the eternal dilemma of wanting apple pie without dedicating a significant portion of your day to baking. My husband, for instance, frequently asks for apple pie. While I love making it, the process of peeling, coring, chopping a mountain of apples, and then baking a full-sized pie can be quite time-consuming.
These individual hand pies offer all the comforting flavor he craves, but with a fraction of the effort. Plus, the air fryer delivers an unparalleled crispy, flaky crust that is utterly delectable, making each bite a truly satisfying experience. Commonly Asked Questions About Air Frying
Understanding How Air Frying Works
While air fryers have gained immense popularity recently, the underlying technology isn’t entirely new. At their core, air fryers function much like miniature convection ovens, conveniently sized for your countertop. This appliance utilizes a powerful fan to rapidly circulate hot air within its compact cooking chamber.
This forced air circulation ensures that heat is evenly distributed around the food. The result is consistently cooked dishes with reduced cooking times compared to conventional ovens. Moreover, this method allows for the creation of deliciously crispy textures without the need for submerging foods in large quantities of oil. The hot air, carrying fine oil droplets from a light misting, is enough to achieve that desired golden-brown crunch, making your meals healthier without sacrificing flavor.
Unveiling the Benefits of Air Frying
Healthier Culinary Choices
It’s widely known that traditionally fried foods are often high in fat and calories. Did you know that every gram of fat contains approximately 9 calories? Air frying significantly reduces the amount of oil needed for cooking, thereby drastically cutting down on fat intake and overall calories. This makes it an excellent option for those looking to enjoy their favorite “fried” dishes in a much healthier way, contributing to a more balanced diet without compromising on taste or texture.
Unmatched Convenience in the Kitchen
One of the primary reasons I adore cooking with my air fryer is the unparalleled convenience it offers. It effectively eliminates the need for bulky baking sheets, numerous pots, and excessive pans. Most of my air fryer recipes can be prepared with just one or two mixing bowls, or a small saucepan, alongside the air fryer itself. This not only simplifies the cooking process but also makes cleanup a breeze, giving you more time to enjoy your meal and less time scrubbing dishes.
Energy Efficiency for the Modern Home
Some might ask, “Why use an air fryer if you can cook something conventionally in the same amount of time?” The answer lies in its remarkable energy efficiency. Air frying often removes the necessity of using a large, conventional oven, which can consume a significant amount of electricity. Not only can you keep your home cooler during warmer months by avoiding oven use, but you’ll also notice a welcome reduction in your energy bills. It’s a win-win for both your comfort and your wallet.
A Significant Time Saver
For me, avoiding the lengthy preheating time of a conventional oven is a huge bonus. Most air fryer recipes either require no preheating at all or only a quick 5-minute warm-up. This is a substantial time-saver when compared to the 15-20 minutes typically needed for a traditional oven to reach temperature. In our busy lives, every minute saved in the kitchen is precious, and the air fryer certainly delivers on this front.
Portability for On-the-Go Lifestyles
The compact and portable nature of an air fryer is another fantastic advantage. It’s incredibly easy to pack and take along on various trips. We often bring ours in our RV, finding that air frying while camping is far more convenient and safer than attempting to deep-fry foods on a small RV stove or an outdoor camping burner. It ensures you can enjoy delicious, perfectly cooked meals wherever your adventures take you.

Essential Tips: How to Prevent Sticking in Your Air Fryer
One common challenge when using an air fryer is preventing food from sticking. While many might instinctively reach for non-stick cooking spray, I strongly advise against it. These sprays tend to leave a sticky residue that accumulates over time, even after washing, and can lead to smoking during subsequent uses of your air fryer. This residue can also damage the non-stick coating of your basket over time.
Similarly, I do not recommend lining the air fryer basket with aluminum foil. The fundamental principle of air frying relies on hot air circulating freely around the food to ensure even cooking and optimal crispiness. The holes in the basket or tray are specifically designed to facilitate this airflow. Placing foil down obstructs this circulation, preventing the air from reaching all surfaces of the food and hindering proper cooking.
Instead, for best results and to prolong the life of your air fryer, I recommend these effective alternatives:
- Spray the basket with olive oil using a dedicated fine mist spray bottle. This provides a light, even coating without the harmful residues of aerosol sprays.
- Line your air fryer with perforated parchment paper. This allows air to still circulate while providing a non-stick surface.
- Invest in one of these excellent reusable silicone liners. They are designed to allow proper airflow, are incredibly easy to clean, and offer an eco-friendly alternative to single-use options.
Air Frying Doneness Tip: Achieving Perfection
It’s important to remember that every air fryer model is slightly different, and they can vary in their cooking rates and temperatures. Therefore, all cooking times provided in recipes should be considered approximate, serving as a general guideline based on typical pan and temperature settings.
Always use the recommended cooking time as a starting point. If your dish isn’t quite done, you can always cook it for a few more minutes, adjusting the heat slightly if needed. If you notice the top browning too quickly, you can loosely tent it with a piece of foil to prevent over-browning while the inside finishes cooking. Trust your instincts and check for visual cues of doneness for the best results!

How to Make Apple Hand Pies in Your Air Fryer
- Unroll your refrigerated pie crusts onto a lightly floured surface. Using a 2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out as many circles as you can from each sheet – typically 8 to 12 circles per sheet.
- Carefully spoon about 1 tablespoon of apple pie filling onto the center of each dough circle. Ensure you leave a ¼-inch border around the edges for sealing.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk thoroughly to create an egg wash.
- Brush the edges of the filled dough circles with the egg wash. Then, place another dough round directly on top of each filled circle.
- To seal the filling securely, use a fork to crimp the edges of each hand pie. Next, gently cut 2-3 small holes in the middle of the top crust. This crucial step allows steam to escape during cooking, preventing your pies from bursting.
- Brush the tops of the assembled pies with the remaining egg wash and, if desired, sprinkle with coarse sugar for an extra sparkle and crunch.
- Repeat this process with all remaining pies until all are assembled and ready for the air fryer.
- Carefully place the filled pies in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 5 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown and the crust is flaky. You may need to cook in batches.
- Serve your delicious Air Fryer Apple Hand Pies immediately and enjoy! Store any leftover pies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Air Fryer Settings: “Bake” Option vs. “Air Fry” Setting
Many modern air fryers come with various preset functions, including a “Bake” option, alongside the standard “Air Fry” setting. It’s a common question whether to use these specific presets for recipes. For all my recipes, including these Apple Hand Pies, I develop them using an air fryer that primarily features only a temperature and timer setting.
This approach ensures that the recipes are universally applicable, as not all air fryers come equipped with additional specialized settings. While you can certainly use the “Bake” setting when preparing recipes that you would traditionally bake, for optimal results with this recipe, I recommend simply setting the temperature and time manually. This allows for precise control and consistent outcomes across different air fryer models.

Our Favorite Air Fryer Models
I often get asked about which air fryer I use, and the truth is, my collection has grown over time! We currently have three air fryers that serve different needs.
I started my air frying journey with a smaller Philips model. It was a great introduction to air frying, but I eventually passed it on to my son since he’s typically only cooking for himself.
As I became more accustomed to air frying, I realized the convenience of a digital screen was something I truly wanted. To my surprise, my XL air fryer from GoWISE was not only more affordable than the Philips but also offered fantastic ease of use and additional functions. Plus, it came with a variety of extra accessories that I frequently use.
When I began working on my second air fryer cookbook, I decided to upgrade to a larger model. I picked up this LARGE air fryer with touch screen presets, and it has been absolutely wonderful. Its XL family size is perfect for cooking larger batches, making it a great choice for families or anyone who loves to entertain.
