Frequently Asked Questions About Pressure Cooker Mac and Cheese

We know you might have some questions about making this amazing dish. Here are answers to some of the most common inquiries to ensure your Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese turns out perfectly every time.

What exactly is Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese?

Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese is a remarkably fast pasta recipe that combines tender macaroni noodles with a luscious cheese sauce and savory bacon, all cooked to perfection in just a few minutes using your electric pressure cooker. It’s the ultimate shortcut to homemade comfort food.

Can I use a different brand of pressure cooker for this recipe?

Absolutely! This recipe is adaptable to most modern electric pressure cookers. Whether you own a Ninja Foodi, a Crockpot Express, or another brand that allows for manual time setting, you can follow these instructions. While I personally use an Instant Pot and highly recommend it, the core pressure cooking principles remain the same across compatible devices. Just ensure your cooker has a manual pressure setting.

Which pressure cooker do you recommend for the best results?

For consistently excellent results with this and many other recipes, I wholeheartedly recommend the Instant Pot. It’s an incredibly versatile appliance that offers numerous functions beyond just pressure cooking, including slow cooking, sautéing, steaming, and more. It simplifies meal preparation and truly elevates your cooking experience.

How should I store leftover Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese?

Any remaining pasta should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To maintain freshness and ensure food safety, it’s always a good practice to label the container with the date. Enjoy your delicious leftovers within 2-3 days for the best taste and quality.

How to Make Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating this creamy, cheesy, bacon-packed delight in your Instant Pot is surprisingly simple. Follow these steps for a perfect meal every time:

  1. **Prepare the Bacon:** Begin by chopping your bacon into small 1-inch pieces. This size ensures even cooking and perfect crispness that will distribute well throughout the mac and cheese.
  2. **Sauté the Bacon:** Activate the “Sauté” function on your Instant Pot. Add the chopped bacon to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired level of crispiness. This step not only cooks the bacon but also renders some delicious fat that will infuse the dish with flavor.
  3. **Remove and Drain Bacon:** Once the bacon is perfectly crispy, carefully remove it from the Instant Pot using a slotted spoon. Transfer the cooked bacon to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess grease. Set it aside for later.
  4. **Handle Bacon Grease:** With caution, drain most of the bacon grease from the pot into a heat-safe glass container. You can save this flavorful grease for other cooking endeavors, or discard it once cooled. Leaving a small amount (about 1-2 tablespoons) in the pot can add depth to the mac and cheese.
  5. **Deglaze and Add Ingredients:** Wipe out any browned bits from the bottom of the pot with a splash of chicken broth or water to prevent a “burn” notice. Then, add the uncooked elbow macaroni, chicken broth, butter, chili powder, garlic powder, minced garlic, minced onions, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir gently to combine, ensuring the pasta is mostly submerged.
  6. **Seal the Pot:** Securely place the lid on your Instant Pot. Make sure the sealing valve is set to the “Sealing” position, not “Venting.”
  7. **Pressure Cook:** Select the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting and set the cooking time to 5 minutes on high pressure. The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure before the cooking countdown begins.
  8. **Quick Release Pressure:** Once the 5-minute cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure. Carefully turn the sealing valve to the “Venting” position to release the steam. Stand clear of the valve to avoid steam burns.
  9. **Stir in Cheese, Bacon, and Milk:** Once the pressure has fully released and the float valve has dropped, open the lid. Immediately stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and milk. Stir continuously until all the cheeses have melted into a smooth, creamy, and irresistible sauce. The residual heat from the pasta will help melt the cheese beautifully.
  10. **Taste and Season:** Taste the mac and cheese and adjust seasonings if necessary. You might want to add a pinch more salt, pepper, or chili powder to suit your preference.

Do you recommend a specific model of pressure cooker?

While my trusty older pressure cooker still serves me well, its limited functions led me to upgrade recently to this Instant Pot model. The enhanced capabilities and user-friendly interface have been a fantastic addition to my kitchen. I’m currently contemplating whether my older model will find a new home in our camper or be passed down to my son when he embarks on his own culinary adventures.

Is this Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese a good gift idea for neighbors?

Absolutely! This Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese makes a truly thoughtful and appreciated gift for friends and neighbors. We often use these convenient disposable containers for gifting, making it easy for the recipients. It’s an excellent gesture the day before a holiday, offering neighbors a night off from cooking. It’s also a perfect gift for new parents, a family experiencing a difficult time, or even to bring to a potluck. For a more lasting present, consider gifting it in a reusable, attractive oven-safe dish, making the dish itself part of the thoughtful gift.

Can I make this Mac and Cheese without bacon?

Absolutely! While bacon adds a unique depth of flavor and texture, you can certainly omit it for a delicious, straightforward mac and cheese. Removing the bacon will naturally shorten the overall cooking time. If you’re looking for other additions, this recipe is incredibly versatile. Consider mixing in browned ground beef or sausage, shredded pulled pork, rotisserie chicken, or a medley of sautéed vegetables for endless variations.

Can I use a different type of pasta noodle?

Yes, you can! While it won’t technically be “macaroni” anymore, using other pasta shapes like spiral (rotini) or penne noodles yields equally delicious results. Due to the sturdier nature of some larger pasta shapes like penne, you might need to increase the pressure cooking time by 1 minute to ensure they are cooked to a tender, yet still al dente, consistency that most prefer.

Can I use water instead of chicken broth for this recipe?

You can substitute chicken broth with water if needed. However, using chicken broth contributes a richer, more savory base flavor to the mac and cheese. If you prefer, vegetable broth is also an excellent substitute. While water won’t drastically alter the overall outcome, the broth does enhance the depth of flavor significantly.

Can I use pre-cooked bacon bits instead of fresh bacon?

Yes, absolutely! Using pre-cooked bacon bits is a fantastic way to make this recipe even faster, as it eliminates the need for the initial sautéing step. For the best flavor and texture, I recommend opting for high-quality real bacon bits over some of the artificial or imitation varieties available on the market.

How can I make this recipe even faster for those super busy days?

One of my favorite hacks for making this recipe lightning fast is to prepare a double batch of bacon during your weekend breakfast routine. Simply cook the extra bacon, let it cool, then chop it up and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When it’s time to make Instant Pot Bacon Mac and Cheese during the week, your pre-cooked bacon is ready to be tossed in, making this dinner almost effortless. It’s a brilliant time-saver you won’t want to live without!

Notes

  • This recipe was created using a 6-quart Instant Pot. If you are using a different size pot or a different pressure cooker brand, cooking times may vary slightly.
  • **High Altitude Adjustment:** When pressure cooking at high altitudes, you may need to increase the cooking time. For every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet elevation, add 5 percent to your cook time. For example, at 4,000+ feet, you would add 10 percent to the cooking time. Even 1-2 minutes can make a significant difference in pressure cooking, unlike traditional methods.
