There’s a reason why the Instant Pot has become a culinary superstar in kitchens worldwide. Its ability to transform meal preparation, cutting down cooking times dramatically while locking in flavor, is simply revolutionary. For years, my own Instant Pot sat in its box, an intimidating new appliance. But once I finally embraced it, I quickly realized what a powerful tool it was. It truly is a game-changer, allowing me to prepare many of our beloved homemade dinners in roughly the same amount of time it would take to drive to a fast-food restaurant and back. This **pressure cooker chicken and broccoli** is a prime example of its magic.
Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Chicken and Broccoli
Can I make this recipe with beef instead of chicken?
Absolutely! If you’re a fan of the classic beef and broccoli, you’re in luck. I have a fantastic Instant Pot Beef and Broccoli recipe here. While the cooking method is similar, the sauce ingredients are subtly adjusted to perfectly complement the beef and ensure that rich, authentic flavor you crave. Each protein requires a slightly different balance of seasonings, and my dedicated beef recipe delivers just that.
What’s the best way to store leftover Chicken and Broccoli?
Storing leftovers properly is crucial for both taste and safety. After serving, ensure any remaining Chicken and Broccoli is transferred to an airtight container. For optimal freshness and to prevent bacterial growth, it’s vital to get food into the refrigerator within one hour of serving. Labeling the container with the date will help you keep track. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, simply add a few tablespoons of water to the container before microwaving for 1-2 minutes, or until thoroughly heated. This helps keep the chicken moist and the sauce from drying out.

How many servings does this recipe yield?
This recipe is designed to generously feed a family of 5, catering to adult appetites without typically leaving much for seconds or significant leftovers. However, portion sizes and individual appetites can vary greatly. If you’re cooking for two adults and two smaller children, you might find yourself with some delicious leftovers to enjoy the next day. Adjusting ingredients slightly to suit your family’s needs is always a good idea, or consider doubling the recipe if you have a larger crowd or want extra meals for the week.
Can I double this Instant Pot Chicken and Broccoli recipe?
Doubling the recipe is certainly possible, but it depends on the capacity of your pressure cooker. Most standard 6-quart Instant Pots can accommodate a doubled recipe, but avoid overfilling past the “max fill” line to ensure efficient and safe cooking. When you increase the volume of ingredients, the Instant Pot will take longer to come to pressure, and the actual cooking time may also need slight adjustment. I recommend increasing the cook time by approximately 7 minutes for a doubled recipe. Crucially, keep the natural release time the same (15 minutes), and always verify the chicken’s doneness before proceeding to the next steps. Patience is key when adjusting batch sizes in a pressure cooker.

Is a specific brand of pressure cooker required for this recipe?
Not at all! While I personally use an Instant Pot, the immense popularity of electric pressure cookers means that many appliance brands now offer their own versions. This recipe is versatile and will work beautifully with virtually any brand of electric pressure cooker. The core principles of pressure cooking remain the same across different models, so feel free to use whichever one you have in your kitchen. Just ensure you are familiar with your specific model’s operation for best results.
Can I use frozen chicken or broccoli in this recipe?
Yes, you can adapt this recipe for convenience! If using frozen chicken breast, cut it into 1-inch pieces while still slightly frozen or mostly thawed for easier handling. You might need to add 2-3 minutes to the manual cook time (making it 12-13 minutes total) to ensure it’s fully cooked. For frozen broccoli, add it directly to the pot during the sauté phase *after* the chicken is cooked and the sauce is thickened. Frozen broccoli can be a bit more tender, so simply stir it in and let it heat through for a couple of minutes until vibrant green and tender-crisp. Avoid pressure cooking frozen broccoli with the chicken, as it will likely become mushy.
How can I adjust the flavor profile of this Chinese Chicken and Broccoli?
Customizing the flavor is easy! For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a teaspoon of sriracha to the sauce mixture. If you prefer it sweeter, you can increase the brown sugar by half a tablespoon. For a deeper umami flavor, a dash of oyster sauce can work wonders. A squeeze of fresh lime juice at the end can also brighten the flavors. Experiment with ginger – a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger added with the garlic can elevate the aromatic notes significantly.
HOW TO MAKE Instant Pot Chicken and Broccoli: Step-by-Step Guide
Creating this delectable **Instant Pot Chicken and Broccoli** is straightforward. Follow these simple steps for a perfect 30-minute meal:
- In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients (soy sauce, sesame oil, chicken broth, brown sugar, minced garlic) EXCEPT the cornstarch. Whisk them together thoroughly until well combined and the brown sugar has dissolved. This forms the base of your rich, savory sauce.
- Place your 1-inch chicken breast pieces into the inner pot of your Instant Pot. Pour the prepared sauce mixture evenly over the chicken, ensuring all pieces are well coated.
- Secure the lid on your Instant Pot, ensuring the sealing ring is properly in place and the vent is set to the “Sealing” position. Select the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting (High Pressure) and set the cook time for 10 minutes.
- Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the pressure to naturally release for 15 minutes. This natural release time is crucial for tender, juicy chicken. After 15 minutes, carefully turn the venting knob to the “Venting” position for a quick release of any remaining pressure.
- Once the float valve has dropped, open the lid. Carefully remove the cooked chicken from the pot and set it aside in a separate bowl. This step prevents the chicken from overcooking while you thicken the sauce.
- Turn off the Instant Pot’s “Keep Warm” function (if active), then select the “Sauté” setting.
- In a small separate bowl, create a cornstarch slurry by whisking the cornstarch with 2-3 tablespoons of cold water until smooth. Pour this slurry into the simmering sauce in the Instant Pot. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. This should only take 1-2 minutes.
- Return the cooked chicken pieces to the pot with the thickened sauce. Stir gently to coat all the chicken in the rich, glossy sauce.
- Finally, add the steamed broccoli florets to the pot. Stir carefully to combine and heat through for about 1 minute. Adding the broccoli at this stage ensures it remains tender-crisp and doesn’t get overcooked.
- Serve your delicious **Instant Pot Chicken and Broccoli** immediately over a bed of fluffy steamed rice, and enjoy your quick, flavorful, and homemade Chinese-inspired meal!

Understanding Why a Shallow Container is Best for Storing Leftovers
When it comes to safely storing leftovers, the type of container you choose plays a surprisingly critical role. Opting for a shallow container, rather than a deep, bulky one, allows the food to chill much more rapidly. This expedited cooling process is essential because you want your leftovers to reach their safe refrigerated temperature (below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius) as quickly as possible. As previously mentioned, if food remains in the “danger zone” (above approximately 35 degrees Fahrenheit or 1.7 degrees Celsius) for more than one hour after cooking, bacteria can begin to multiply rapidly.
A large, deep container of warm food can take several hours to cool down sufficiently in a refrigerator, creating an extended window for bacterial growth. By using shallow containers, you significantly reduce this cooling time, minimizing the risk of harmful bacteria flourishing in your delicious leftovers. This simple practice ensures that your stored food remains safe to eat and retains its quality for longer.
Can I use my Instant Pot to make the rice as well?
Absolutely! Your Instant Pot is incredibly versatile and perfect for cooking fluffy white rice. To streamline your meal prep, I recommend cooking the rice *before* you start on the chicken and broccoli. Once the rice is done, simply transfer it to another bowl and set it aside while you proceed with the main dish. To cook perfect white rice in your Instant Pot, combine 2 cups of white rice with 2.5 cups of water or chicken broth in the inner pot. Secure the lid, close the valve, and select the “Rice” button. The Instant Pot will automatically determine the optimal cooking time. Once it beeps, indicating it’s finished, allow for a 10-minute natural pressure release before carefully opening the lid. This method yields perfectly cooked rice every time, ready to serve alongside your flavorful **chicken and broccoli**.

Notes
**Live at High Altitude – Because water boils at a lower temperature at high altitudes, and pressure cooking requires water to boil in order to work, some foods may need a little more cooking time. When pressure cooking at high altitudes you want to make sure to add 5 percent to your cook time for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet elevation. For example, when we lived at 4,000+ feet I would add 10 percent to my cook time. For a recipe that called for 20-minutes of cooking time, I would then cook for 22 minutes. When pressure cooking, 1-2 minutes can make all the difference in a recipe, unlike when cooking by traditional methods.
