The Joy of Homemade: Why Baked Strawberry Donuts?

Life can be busy, and sometimes the convenience of store-bought treats seems appealing. When we lived in the city, grabbing donuts for weekend breakfasts was a quick run, or even easier with delivery services. However, moving further out meant those conveniences were no longer at our fingertips. This shift reignited my passion for baking, and I quickly discovered the immense joy and incredible flavor of making our own donuts.

These baked strawberry donuts are a game-changer. Not only are they ready in just 30 minutes – often less time than it would take to drive to a shop – but they also offer a fresh, wholesome quality that store-bought simply can’t match. The sweet strawberry flavor is truly exceptional, making every bite a delightful experience. You’ll be amazed at how simple it is to achieve such fantastic results, transforming your mornings into something truly special.

Frequently Asked Questions About Strawberry Donuts

How should I store leftover strawberry donuts?

For best results, store your glazed strawberry donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. This helps to maintain the integrity of the glaze, preventing it from becoming overly sticky or gooey. If you prefer a more traditional bakery experience, you can also store unglazed donuts in a cardboard box or a paper bag at room temperature for a day or two. However, avoid storing glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature, as the moisture can make the glaze incredibly messy and prone to melting.

Can this recipe be halved for a smaller batch?

Absolutely! If you only need about six delicious donuts instead of a dozen, this recipe is incredibly easy to scale down. Simply halve all the ingredient quantities. When it comes to the egg, you can either whisk a large egg and measure out half, or use an egg substitute product designed for easy halving.

Should I use salted or unsalted butter for this recipe?

This largely comes down to personal preference. If you enjoy a subtle hint of salt to balance the sweetness in your baked goods, then salted butter will work beautifully. I often use whatever butter I have on hand, but I typically keep salted butter in my pantry, and I find that the touch of extra salt truly enhances the sweet strawberry flavor in these donuts. In times when specific ingredients are hard to find at the grocery store, it’s always best to use what’s available and adjust to your taste.

Key Ingredients and Their Purpose

  • Freeze-Dried Strawberries: This is our secret weapon for intense strawberry flavor! Grinding these into a fine powder delivers a concentrated burst of fruitiness without adding excess moisture that fresh strawberries would. It’s surprisingly simple and incredibly effective.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Provides the fundamental structure for our donuts, ensuring they hold their shape and have a tender crumb. Always measure using the spoon and level method for accurate results and to avoid dense donuts.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the donuts to perfection, creating that classic bakery-style taste we all love.
  • Baking Powder: Our essential leavening agent! Baking powder reacts with the wet ingredients to create air bubbles, giving the donuts their light, airy, and fluffy texture.
  • Whole Milk: Adds crucial moisture to the batter, preventing the donuts from becoming dry. Using whole milk also contributes a rich, tender quality to the final product.
  • Vegetable Oil & Butter: This dynamic duo ensures ultimate moisture and flavor. Vegetable oil keeps the donuts incredibly moist, while melted butter adds a depth of rich, buttery taste that’s hard to beat.
  • Large Egg: Acts as a binder, helping to emulsify the ingredients and hold the batter together, contributing to a smooth texture and proper rise.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla enhances all the other flavors, particularly complementing the sweetness of the strawberries and adding a warm, aromatic depth.

What exactly is a baked donut?

Baked donuts, often referred to as cake donuts, offer a delightful alternative to their traditional fried counterparts. Unlike fried donuts, which are submerged in hot oil, baked donuts are cooked in an oven using a donut pan. This method results in a lighter, less greasy treat that still boasts a wonderfully moist and tender crumb. They are typically finished with a delicious glaze, frosting, or a simple sugar coating, providing all the flavor and sweetness you expect from a donut without the deep-frying process.

ingredients for Strawberry Donuts

Ingredients You’ll Need for These Delicious Strawberry Donuts

For the Donuts:

  • 1 ounce freeze-dried strawberries
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter – melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For the Glaze (Optional, but highly recommended!):

  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Can I make these with fresh strawberries instead of freeze-dried?

While I highly recommend freeze-dried strawberries for their concentrated flavor and lack of added moisture, you can certainly experiment with fresh strawberries. If using fresh, I would suggest adding between 1/2 to 1 cup of finely diced strawberries. Keep in mind that fresh strawberries will release moisture during baking, which could potentially increase your baking time and might alter the texture slightly. This addition will also likely increase the total volume of your batter, so you may yield more than 12 donuts. You might also consider tossing the diced strawberries in a tablespoon of flour before adding them to the batter to help prevent them from sinking to the bottom.

how to make Strawberry Donuts

Simple Steps to Make Your Strawberry Donuts

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare your donut pans by greasing them thoroughly with nonstick baking spray or a light coating of oil. Set the pans aside.
  2. In a high-speed food processor or blender, add the freeze-dried strawberries. Pulse until they are ground into a fine powder, which typically takes about 45 seconds. Set aside 1 teaspoon of this strawberry powder to incorporate into your glaze later.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining strawberry powder with the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and baking powder. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly until well combined.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: milk, vegetable oil, melted butter, large egg, and pure vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently just until everything is combined and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough donuts.
  6. Carefully divide the batter among the wells of your prepared donut pan, filling each well approximately one-third full. A piping bag can make this task easier and neater, but a spoon works just as well.
  7. Bake for 16-18 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, transfer the donuts immediately to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely before proceeding with the optional glaze.
  9. **For the Optional Glaze:** In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and the reserved 1 teaspoon of strawberry powder until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Adjust milk quantity slightly if needed to achieve desired consistency.
  10. Dip the cooled donuts into the prepared glaze, or simply spread the frosting evenly over the top of each donut.
  11. Store the glazed donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. For optimal taste and texture, allow them to come to room temperature before serving.

Where can I find freeze-dried strawberries?

Freeze-dried strawberries are typically available in the baking aisle of most major grocery stores. If your local store doesn’t carry them, they are also readily available online. Living in rural Idaho, I often find it easiest and most reliable to order mine for delivery.

Can I freeze these strawberry donuts?

Yes, these delicious donuts freeze beautifully! For the best results, I recommend freezing them *before* glazing, as the glaze can become soggy and sticky in the moist freezer environment. To freeze, arrange the unglazed donuts in a single layer on a plate or baking sheet and place them in the freezer until solid. Once frozen, you can transfer them to a freezer-safe zip-top bag or an airtight container for longer-term storage. When you’re ready to enjoy them, thaw the donuts overnight in the refrigerator, then glaze them fresh before serving.

What pairs well with strawberry donuts?

Often, these delightful strawberry donuts are enjoyed simply with a morning cup of coffee. However, for special occasions, holidays, or when hosting company, they can be part of a larger, impressive breakfast or brunch spread.
