Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

This heartwarming recipe originally debuted over at Real Housemoms, where I proudly contribute my favorite family recipes.

The abundance of apples we gather each year usually leads to a delightful overload of homemade apple butter, fragrant cinnamon applesauce, and plenty of luscious apple pie filling. All of these glorious creations are, of course, generously infused with our favorite spice: cinnamon. The aroma that fills our home during this time is absolutely incredible, and I’m constantly seeking new and inventive ways to incorporate these apple-cinnamon delights into our daily meals and treats.

Best Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

Our deep affection for cinnamon naturally extends to a profound love for cinnamon rolls. I still vividly remember a period when I was expecting my son, living near a bakery that crafted, hands-down, the most amazing cinnamon rolls—or perhaps they were sticky buns, but equally delicious. I made it a daily ritual to buy one on my way to work.

I’m convinced this daily indulgence is the root of my son’s current obsession with cinnamon! During that blissful time, I practically lived on those sweet treats. Fortunately, I was young, and my metabolism was incredibly fast, allowing me to eat almost anything I desired, even while pregnant. Those were truly glorious days!

Now, my son is older than I was back then, and life has changed. We’ve moved far from that town, and access to truly exceptional cinnamon rolls is limited. This means I’ve taken on the delightful task of making them myself – a good thing in many ways, as it ensures fresh, high-quality ingredients and a personalized touch.

Just the other day, we ventured out for breakfast at a new spot. We weren’t particularly impressed with the overall experience, but, ever hopeful, we ordered some cinnamon rolls to take home, hoping they might redeem the meal. Alas, it was a colossal disappointment. What we received was more akin to a plain dinner roll with a mere ribbon of cinnamon, a far cry from the rich, gooey delight we craved. Thankfully, I had this reliable “go-to” recipe to fall back on.

Without hesitation, I pulled out my casserole dishes and prepared a double batch of these super easy and incredibly delicious cinnamon rolls. I knew, with absolute certainty, that they would rival any bakery in town. These homemade apple pie cinnamon rolls are a testament to how simple ingredients and a little love can create truly unforgettable flavors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

Can I use a different pie filling for this recipe?

Absolutely! While apple pie filling offers that quintessential fall flavor, you can certainly experiment with any flavor of pie filling you prefer. Imagine cherry, peach, or even berry fillings – they are sure to be delicious no matter what delightful fruit you choose to stuff them with. Each variation would offer a unique twist on this classic breakfast treat.

Why Choose Cinnamon Rolls with Apple Pie Filling?

Incorporating apple pie filling into traditional cinnamon rolls offers a truly delightful and innovative twist. The harmonious blend of the soft, sweet dough characteristic of a cinnamon roll with the robust, spiced apple pie filling creates a mesmerizing contrast of textures and flavors. Here are compelling reasons why this combination is a must-try for any baking enthusiast:

  • Exquisite Flavor Combination: The classic trio of cinnamon, sugar, and apples creates a profoundly comforting and inherently delicious flavor profile. The warmth of cinnamon perfectly complements the natural sweetness and slight tartness of apples, resulting in a taste that evokes cozy autumn days.
  • A Welcome Variation: While traditional cinnamon rolls are undeniably fantastic, adding apple pie filling introduces an element of surprise and variety. It elevates a beloved classic into something fresh and exciting, making it perfect for special occasions or when you simply crave something a little different.
  • Embrace the Seasonal Twist: This recipe shines brightest during the fall season when apples are at their peak and apple pies grace countless tables. Infusing your cinnamon rolls with apple pie filling provides a wonderful seasonal touch, connecting your baking directly to the bounty and spirit of autumn. Baking during the fall has never been more delicious!
  • Delightful Texture Contrast: The signature soft and gooey texture of the cinnamon roll dough creates a beautiful interplay with the tender, yet slightly firm, chunks of apple in the pie filling. This textural contrast ensures every bite is interesting and satisfying, a symphony for your palate.
  • Irresistible Visual Appeal: The intricate swirls of apple pie filling visible throughout the baked cinnamon roll are not just delicious but also visually stunning. This appealing pattern makes these rolls particularly enticing and perfect for showcasing at any breakfast or brunch spread.
  • Combining Beloved Favorites: Cinnamon rolls and apple pie are individually cherished desserts. This recipe brilliantly combines the best elements of both, creating a hybrid treat that offers the comforting familiarity of each, amplified by their combined presence. It’s truly the best of both worlds!

What is the best way to store leftover cinnamon rolls?

To keep your delicious cinnamon rolls fresh, the simplest method is to cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store them at room temperature. This helps maintain their soft texture and prevents them from drying out.

However, if you reside in an environment with extreme humidity or dryness, refrigerating the cinnamon rolls is recommended. This controlled climate helps them stay fresh for the longest possible time, preserving their delightful flavor and texture. For optimal enjoyment, please consume them within 2-3 days.

How many servings does this recipe yield?

This recipe is designed to make 12 generously sized rolls. These are not your average mini cinnamon rolls; they are quite substantial and incredibly filling. My daughters and I often find it challenging to finish an entire one in a single sitting!

If you have a smaller appetite, or simply wish to savor the experience without feeling overly stuffed, you might find that half a roll is perfectly satisfying. However, if you’re feeding a crew of super hungry individuals – especially growing boys – then you’ll definitely want to consider making a double batch to ensure everyone gets their fill of these delectable homemade breakfast treats. 😉

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls: Scaling the Recipe

Can this recipe be doubled?

Theoretically, yes, this recipe can be doubled. However, it’s worth noting that I use my largest stand mixer to handle this dough, and a single batch already fills it to capacity. If you plan to double the recipe, and you don’t have an industrial-sized mixer or prefer to knead the dough by hand, ensure you have ample space to work.

If you do double it, you’ll need to divide the dough between two 9×13 inch baking dishes to accommodate the 24 rolls. Alternatively, and this is my preferred method, you can simply make two separate batches back-to-back. It takes a bit longer, but the fresh, warm results are absolutely worth the extra effort.

Can this recipe be halved?

I haven’t personally attempted to make a half-batch of this recipe yet. The main challenge would be accurately halving the egg. You could consider using an egg substitute, which would simplify that particular portion of the recipe by allowing for more precise measurements.

Another excellent option is to make the recipe as written and then freeze any portion you won’t consume immediately. This allows you to enjoy fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls over a longer period, or share them with fortunate friends and neighbors.

How to Make Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these delightful apple pie cinnamon rolls is a rewarding process. Follow these simple steps for a truly incredible fall breakfast treat:

  1. Begin by activating the yeast: Add the specified amount of yeast to ½ cup of room-temperature water in a small bowl.
  2. Stir the yeast and water gently with a spoon, then set it aside to proof while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the shortening, granulated sugar, hot water, and salt. Beat these ingredients for approximately 30 seconds until well mixed.
  4. Allow this mixture to cool down completely to room temperature before proceeding to the next step.
  5. Once cooled, add 2 cups of all-purpose flour to the mixer bowl and mix until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
  6. Stir in the proofed yeast mixture until it is thoroughly combined with the batter.
  7. Next, incorporate the beaten eggs into the mixture, ensuring they are fully integrated.
  8. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing with the dough hook attachment for about 2 minutes until a soft dough forms.
  9. Carefully remove the dough from the mixer bowl and transfer it to a lightly floured counter surface.
  10. Lightly flour your hands and knead the dough by hand. If it feels too sticky, add a small amount of additional flour as needed.
  11. Continue kneading until the dough feels smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
  12. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, then cover it with a clean towel.
  13. Let the dough rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes, or until it has visibly doubled in size.
  14. Once risen, remove the dough from the bowl and place it back on a lightly floured counter.
  15. Roll the dough out into a large rectangular shape.
  16. Evenly spread the softened butter over the entire surface of the rolled-out dough.
  17. Generously sprinkle the dough with the brown sugar and the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  18. Carefully spread the apple pie filling over the cinnamon-sugar layer.
  19. Gently roll up the dough from one long side into a single, cohesive log.
  20. Using a dough cutter or a sharp knife, slice the roll into 12 even pieces.
  21. Arrange the cut rolls into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, leaving a little space between each roll.
  22. Place the pan of rolls in a warm spot and cover with a towel.
  23. Allow the rolls to rise again until they have doubled in size, which typically takes about an hour.
  24. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Bake the rolls for the first 10 minutes at this temperature.
  25. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue to bake for an additional 7-10 minutes, or until the rolls are beautifully golden brown on top.
  26. Remove the pans from the oven and let the rolls cool slightly on a wire rack before frosting.

Simple Glaze Frosting Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the milk and confectioners’ sugar. Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Pour the delicious frosting generously over the warm, cooled rolls and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Can I use Gluten-Free flour for these cinnamon rolls?

I haven’t personally tested this recipe with gluten-free flour yet, but it’s an experiment I’m keen to try soon! If you decide to give it a go, I highly recommend using a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend like this one. These blends are specifically formulated to replace regular all-purpose flour in recipes without requiring significant alterations to other ingredients, which is often necessary when adapting bread-type recipes to be gluten-free. Please, if you try it, come back and share your results in the comments! Your feedback would be incredibly valuable to the community.

What to Serve with Cinnamon Rolls with Apple Pie Filling

While these cinnamon rolls for breakfast with apple pie filling are a delightful treat on their own, pairing them with complementary dishes can transform your breakfast or brunch into a truly well-rounded and memorable meal. Here are some fantastic ideas to serve alongside your homemade rolls:

  • Refreshing Fresh Fruit Salad: A vibrant and light fruit salad provides a perfect counterpoint to the sweetness of the cinnamon rolls. Opt for a mix of seasonal berries, melon, grapes, and citrus for a burst of freshness.
  • Creamy Yogurt Parfait: Offer individual yogurt parfaits, layering creamy Greek yogurt with crunchy granola and an assortment of fresh or frozen mixed berries. This adds protein and a delightful texture.
  • Savory Scrambled Eggs: If you’re serving these for breakfast or brunch, fluffy scrambled eggs introduce a savory element that balances the meal beautifully. Enhance them with chopped fresh herbs, shredded cheese, or diced bell peppers for added flavor.
  • Hearty Breakfast Sausages: Whether you prefer pork, chicken, or plant-based sausages, these can add a robust, savory component that harmonizes wonderfully with the sweet and spiced flavors of the apple pie cinnamon rolls.
  • Elegant Quiche: A savory quiche, filled with a medley of vegetables, rich cheeses, and perhaps some crispy ham or bacon, offers a sophisticated and balanced contrast to the sweet rolls.
  • Crispy Bacon or Turkey Bacon: The salty, crunchy texture of perfectly cooked bacon or turkey bacon is a timeless pairing with sweet breakfast pastries, creating a delightful interplay of flavors and textures.
  • Versatile Frittata: A frittata, made with eggs, various cheeses, and your choice of vegetables, is a flexible dish that can be customized to suit any taste. It’s delicious served warm or at room temperature.
  • Thinly Sliced Ham or Turkey: For a lighter protein option, thin slices of deli ham or roasted turkey breast can provide a satisfying contrast to the sweet rolls without being too heavy.
  • Classic Tea or Coffee: Complete the ultimate breakfast or brunch experience with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee or your favorite hot tea. The warmth and rich flavors perfectly complement the rolls.
  • Nutritious Smoothies: Blend up a vibrant, healthy smoothie with a combination of fruits, leafy greens, and your preferred milk or yogurt for a refreshing and healthful accompaniment that adds vitamins and fiber.
  • Freshly Squeezed Juice: A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, apple juice, or another fruit juice offers a tangy and invigorating beverage that cuts through the sweetness of the rolls.

What type of bakeware should I use for cinnamon rolls?

For many years, I primarily used glass baking dishes, such as Pyrex, for my cinnamon rolls. However, since I last photographed these particular rolls, I’ve made a conscious change in my bakeware choices.

Due to safety concerns regarding glass cookware, particularly the risk of pans shattering when exposed to high temperatures or sudden temperature changes during baking, I now strongly recommend using alternatives. Please opt for a metal baking pan, a sturdy Corningware dish, or a durable Enameled Cast Iron baking dish. These materials offer better heat distribution and are generally safer for baking at the temperatures required for delicious, golden-brown cinnamon rolls.

Easy Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

Can you freeze apple pie cinnamon rolls?

Yes, these delightful cinnamon rolls are perfectly suitable for freezing, allowing you to enjoy them long after they’re baked! To freeze, simply bake the rolls according to the recipe instructions until golden brown. Once cooled, portion out any rolls you don’t plan to enjoy within 2-3 days.

For best results, wrap each individual roll tightly in plastic wrap, and then overwrap with aluminum foil. This double layer of protection helps prevent freezer burn. Make sure to label each package with the date before placing them in the freezer. They will maintain their quality for approximately 2-3 months.

I highly recommend only adding the icing to the rolls you intend to eat right away. When you’re ready to enjoy the frozen rolls, thaw them at room temperature or gently warm them in the oven, and then prepare a fresh batch of icing. They are undoubtedly better with fresh icing, which restores that perfect gooey texture and sweet finish.

Creative Variations for Your Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

The beauty of baking lies in its endless possibilities for customization and creativity! While our classic apple pie cinnamon rolls are fantastic as is, there are numerous delightful variations you can explore to tantalize your taste buds. Here are a few ideas to get your creative baking juices flowing and elevate your homemade cinnamon rolls:

  • Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls: Take these rolls to the next level by adding a generous drizzle of homemade or store-bought caramel sauce over the apple pie filling before you roll up the dough. The caramel will melt into a luscious, gooey layer, creating an even richer flavor.
  • Crunchy Streusel Topping: For an added layer of texture and sweetness, top your cinnamon rolls with a simple streusel. Mix flour, cold butter, sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon until crumbly, then sprinkle it over the rolls before baking.
  • Rich Cream Cheese Frosting: Instead of a traditional milk glaze, crown your apple pie cinnamon rolls with a tangy and rich cream cheese frosting. The slight tartness of cream cheese perfectly complements the sweet apple and cinnamon flavors.
  • Nutty Delight: Incorporate finely chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, into the apple pie filling for a delightful crunch and nutty flavor. You can also sprinkle them on top of the rolls before baking for a toasted finish.
  • Spiced Drizzle: Enhance your glaze by adding a touch of fall spices. Create a spiced icing made from powdered sugar, a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a bit of milk or cream for an aromatic finish.
  • Whole Wheat or Gluten-Free Dough: For a healthier or dietary-friendly option, experiment with using whole wheat flour or a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend for the dough. Adjust liquids as necessary, as these flours can absorb moisture differently.
  • Explore Different Apple Varieties: Don’t limit yourself to one type of apple! Try using a mix of sweet and tart apples for your filling (if making from scratch), such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji. This allows you to fine-tune the flavor balance to your preference.
  • Chunky Filling: Instead of a smooth spread, opt for larger, more rustic chunks of apples within the rolls. This gives a delightful “burst” of apple flavor and texture in every single bite, making them feel even more homemade.
  • Mini Rolls: For bite-sized treats perfect for parties, gatherings, or smaller appetites, simply cut your rolled dough into smaller slices. Adjust baking time accordingly.
  • Add Dried Fruits: Incorporate plump raisins or tangy dried cranberries into the apple pie filling for extra bursts of sweetness and a different chewiness that complements the apples beautifully.
  • Savory-Sweet Twist: For an unexpected gourmet touch, sprinkle a tiny amount of finely chopped fresh rosemary into the apple pie filling. This creates a unique savory-sweet combination that is surprisingly delicious and sophisticated.

Remember, baking is an art form that thrives on experimentation and personal creativity. Feel empowered to mix and match these ideas, or invent your own unique variations. The ultimate goal is to create a delightful treat that sparks joy in your kitchen and satisfies your taste buds!

Tips, Tricks, and Expert Suggestions for Perfect Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

Achieving bakery-quality cinnamon rolls at home is easier than you think with these helpful insights:

  • **Customize Your Gooey Goodness:** To elevate these gooey cinnamon rolls even further, consider serving them with a drizzle of warm caramel syrup, a dollop of vanilla bean ice cream (especially if serving as dessert), or additional homemade apple pie filling. A rich cream cheese icing also takes these to the next level. They are excellent as a special Christmas morning breakfast or an easy dessert recipe – depending on how you choose to serve them, they’re sure to impress!
  • **Prevent Over-Browning:** Every oven has its quirks and bakes a little differently. If you notice the tops of your cinnamon rolls are browning too quickly, simply tent the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil. This prevents the sweet tops from over-browning while allowing the dough to finish baking through perfectly.
  • **Choose Your Favorite Apple Pie Filling:** Whether you prefer a specific brand of store-bought apple pie filling or have a cherished homemade recipe, feel free to use what you love most. The quality of your filling will directly impact the final flavor of your rolls.
  • **Utilize Your Stand Mixer’s Dough Hook:** For the best dough consistency, always be sure to use the dough hook attachment on your stand mixer when preparing the dough for these classic desserts. It ensures proper kneading and development of the gluten, resulting in a soft, airy roll.
  • **Salted or Unsalted Butter:** When preparing the filling or dough, you can use either unsalted butter or salted butter when making these warm cinnamon rolls – it’s entirely up to your preference. If using salted butter, you might slightly reduce the added salt in the dough, but generally, the small amount won’t drastically alter the flavor.
  • **Simplify with Store-Bought Cinnamon Rolls:** For those days when you crave the flavor but are short on time, you can simplify things! Take cans of store-bought cinnamon rolls (your favorite brand), combine them with either sweet fresh apple slices or canned apple pie filling, and a sprinkle of warm cinnamon spice. You could bake this combination like a cinnamon roll casserole (a cobbler-style dessert) or arrange them as traditional cinnamon buns with an added apple twist.
  • **Explore Pie Dough Crusts:** Imagine the possibilities by trying this concept with apple filling paired with pie dough crusts, then topped with the original icing. This could create an exciting new dessert, blending pie and roll textures.
