Hutch Gets a Metallic Glow Up

Every home tells a story, and often, the most cherished tales are those of transformation. For years, I’ve harbored a secret passion for all things that shimmer and sparkle, particularly when it comes to home decor. The idea of infusing my living spaces with a touch of metallic elegance has been a long-standing dream, one that finally began to materialize after an unforgettable experience at the SNAP! Conference. It was there, amidst a vibrant atmosphere of creativity and innovation, that I had the absolute pleasure of connecting with the incredible team from Modern Masters. Discovering their extensive line of metallic paints was, to put it mildly, a revelation. I had always imagined such paints existed, but to see them in person, in an astonishing array of colors and finishes, was truly exhilarating. The possibilities instantly flooded my mind, especially knowing our new house was then about 50% complete. I confess, I was practically squealing with excitement while experimenting with their demos. They might have thought I was a little bit crazy, but the sheer joy of painting with shimmering colors is something truly special to me. This encounter was the catalyst for a much-needed home decor update, starting with a cherished piece of furniture. Once home, Modern Masters generously sent me samples to embark on a smaller, personal project before I tackled something as monumental as my studio wall. And so, the adventure began with a delightful Metallic Hutch Makeover – a project I’m absolutely thrilled to share!

Transforming a Dated Heirloom: The Story of My Hutch

The piece in question was an old hutch, a sentimental gift from my mom that had graced our home since I was a child, probably around seven or eight years old. For decades, this hutch had proudly worn its very distinctive, traditional country-style look. While it held many memories, its aesthetic had become decidedly dated, no longer fitting the evolving modern farmhouse and elegant chic style I envisioned for our new home. It was long overdue for a fresh perspective, a complete stylistic overhaul that would breathe new life into its sturdy frame. This hutch wasn’t just furniture; it was a canvas waiting for a contemporary expression. The timing was perfect, coinciding with the setup of my new studio space. I was incredibly eager to finally undertake projects like this indoors, within a bright and spacious area that inspires creativity. (Don’t mind the temporary clutter in the background of some photos – I embarked on this project just days after moving in. Rest assured, the studio is now perfectly organized and pretty, a transformation I’ll be sharing in detail very soon!)

The Foundation for a Flawless Finish: Priming the Hutch

Starting any furniture makeover project correctly is crucial, and for this hutch, I began with a thorough coat of primer. This step is a true time-saver and makes the entire painting process significantly easier than the arduous task of sanding the entire piece down to its bare wood. Priming creates an optimal surface for your paint to adhere to, ensuring a smooth, uniform finish and vibrant color, especially when working with specialty paints like metallics. It also helps to seal any stains or odors from the old finish, preventing them from bleeding through your new paint. For a piece with a long history and a strong existing finish like my hutch, a high-quality primer is non-negotiable. It provided the perfect blank slate, preparing the hutch to fully embrace its forthcoming metallic transformation without any complications. This simple but vital step ensures durability and a professional-looking result, making all the difference in the longevity and appearance of your metallic masterpiece.

Metallic Paint Brush Close Up

I couldn’t help myself – I had to get a little macro of the paintbrush. Witnessing the subtle sheen of the metallic paint on the bristles was an exciting preview of what was to come!

Choosing the Perfect Palate: Champagne, Oyster, and Monk’s Cloth

Metallic Paint Colors - Champagne & Oyster

Selecting the right colors is perhaps the most exciting part of any paint project, and for this metallic hutch makeover, I gravitated towards two exquisite shades from Modern Masters: Champagne and Oyster. These colors embody elegance and a subtle luxuriousness that I knew would perfectly elevate the hutch from its country roots to a more sophisticated, shimmering aesthetic. Champagne offers a warm, golden glow, reminiscent of festive celebrations, while Oyster provides a cooler, silvery iridescence, like the inside of a pearl. Together, they promised a harmonious blend of warmth and cool tones, creating depth and visual interest. Since I had samples and not enough metallic paint to cover the entire hutch, I strategically chose a complementary base shade for the less prominent areas: a beautiful taupe called Monk’s Cloth (# MSL097), the same elegant color our doors are painted in throughout the house. This choice ensures continuity in our home’s color scheme, making the hutch feel like a cohesive part of our interior design, rather than a standalone piece.

The Art of Application: Maximizing Metallic Shimmer

My usual approach to painting furniture is to start with the largest areas of a single color. However, with these precious metallic samples, I wanted to see just how much I could stretch them and where they would make the most impact. So, I reversed my process and began with the metallic colors. I carefully applied the Champagne paint to the fronts of the doors, the drawer fronts, and the top drawers – areas that would naturally catch the light and draw the eye. The goal was to create focal points of shimmer and luxury. I also managed to stretch the Champagne a little further, adding a touch to the top of the open display area of the hutch, enhancing its elegance. Applying metallic paints requires a bit of finesse; thin, even coats are key to achieving a uniform shimmer without visible brushstrokes. I found that working in consistent directions helped to ensure the metallic particles lay smoothly, maximizing their reflective quality. This initial application of Champagne immediately began to transform the hutch, hinting at the opulent finish that was yet to come.

Layering for Depth and Iridescence: The Final Touches

Once the Champagne metallic paint was dry on its designated areas, it was time to introduce the base color and add another layer of metallic magic. I meticulously applied the Monk’s Cloth taupe to all the remaining surfaces of the hutch. This provided a warm, neutral backdrop that allowed the metallic elements to truly pop and shine. The Monk’s Cloth color grounds the piece, giving it a sophisticated and contemporary feel that perfectly complements the shimmer. The final, captivating step involved layering a light coat of the Oyster metallic paint over the Champagne areas. This technique was specifically chosen to infuse those sections with an added dimension of iridescence. The subtle, pearlescent quality of Oyster over the warm Champagne creates a dynamic interplay of light and color, making the metallic finish appear even richer and more complex. It’s a nuanced detail that adds significant depth, allowing the hutch to shimmer with varying intensity depending on the angle of light. After allowing everything to dry completely, I carefully re-installed the glass panels back into the doors, marking the completion of the painting process and bringing my vision to life.

Then I added the Monk’s Cloth on everything else. Then I added the oyster in a light coat over the champagne to give it more iridescence. Let it dry & placed my glass back in the doors.

The Grand Reveal: A Shimmering Statement Piece for My Studio

Metallic Hutch Make Over - Finished Look

The transformation is simply breathtaking. What was once a dated, country-style hutch is now a stunning, elegant focal point in my studio. The metallic finish, with its delicate dance of Champagne and Oyster, catches the light beautifully, creating a dynamic surface that shifts and glows throughout the day. This is now where I proudly store my food props for photography in my studio – a functional piece of furniture that is also a work of art. The shimmering effect adds a touch of sophistication and glamour, perfectly aligning with the refreshed aesthetic of my creative space. Every time my gaze falls upon it, a smile spreads across my face. It’s more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a testament to the power of paint and the magic of metallic finishes to completely revitalize and redefine a space. This makeover truly proves that with the right materials and a little imagination, any old piece can be given a second life, transforming it into something truly extraordinary.
