Why Choose the Instant Pot for Popcorn?
You might be wondering, with so many ways to make popcorn, why should you opt for the Instant Pot? The answer lies in its unique ability to deliver consistently perfect results with minimal effort. Unlike stovetop methods that require constant shaking and vigilance to prevent burning, the Instant Pot offers a hands-off approach. Its “sauté” function creates an ideal environment for even heat distribution, ensuring that most kernels pop efficiently and thoroughly.
Beyond convenience, the Instant Pot method also typically results in fewer unpopped kernels, meaning more delicious popcorn for everyone. It’s also remarkably clean; no messy splatters to clean up afterward, making it perfect for quick snack cravings or impromptu gatherings. Plus, for those who enjoy the spectacle of popcorn popping, a clear glass lid allows you to watch the magic unfold, much like a traditional stovetop pot, but with the added ease of electric cooking.
Common Questions About Instant Pot Popcorn
What Kind Of Oil Should I Use For Popcorn?
The secret to perfectly popped kernels lies in using an oil with a high smoke point. This ensures the oil can reach the necessary temperature to pop the corn without burning, which can impart an unpleasant taste. Excellent choices include avocado oil, peanut oil, or even light olive oil. Each offers a subtly different flavor profile, allowing you to experiment and discover your personal favorite for enhancing your popcorn’s taste. Coconut oil is another fantastic option, often used for its slightly sweet, nutty flavor that pairs wonderfully with popcorn.
How Do You Keep Popcorn Crispy?
To preserve that delightful crunch, proper storage is key. Once your popcorn has cooled completely, transfer it to an airtight container. Store this container at room temperature, away from any moisture. Humidity is the arch-nemesis of crispy popcorn, causing it to become stale and chewy. Keeping it dry will ensure you enjoy that satisfying crispness for as long as possible.
Why Won’t My Popcorn Pop In Instant Pot?
If your popcorn isn’t performing as expected in the Instant Pot, there are a few common culprits. The most frequent reason is often old kernels. Popcorn kernels lose moisture over time, which is essential for them to pop. Always use fresh, good-quality kernels for the best results. Another factor could be insufficient heat; ensure your Instant Pot reaches its “hot” indicator before adding the kernels. Finally, sometimes improper oil distribution or overcrowding can prevent some kernels from heating evenly. Consider stirring the kernels more frequently during the initial heating phase to help them all get enough heat for a delicious Instant Pot popcorn treat.
Can I Use Butter to Pop Popcorn in the Instant Pot?
While butter adds a wonderful flavor, it has a lower smoke point than oils like avocado or peanut oil, making it prone to burning if used alone for popping. For buttery popcorn, it’s best to pop the kernels in a high smoke point oil first. Once the popcorn is popped and transferred to a serving bowl, you can then drizzle it with melted butter for that classic movie theater taste. Alternatively, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of butter along with your chosen oil at the beginning, but monitor closely to ensure it doesn’t burn before the kernels pop.

Storage and Reheating
Popcorn is a wonderfully delicious and wholesome snack, and with this recipe, chances are, you won’t have any leftovers – it’s just too good to resist!
Refrigerator
While popcorn is undoubtedly best when enjoyed fresh and hot, if you do find yourself with a small amount of leftover popcorn, you can store it. Place it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to a week. However, be aware that the texture may become slightly chewier after refrigeration.
Freezer
Freezing popcorn is generally not recommended. The moisture content can cause the popcorn to become soggy and lose its appealing texture when thawed, making for a less enjoyable snack.
Reheating (for crispiness)
If your leftover popcorn has lost some of its crispness, you can try reheating it in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until it re-crisps. You can also spread it on a baking sheet and heat in an oven at 250°F (120°C) for 5-10 minutes. This method helps to evaporate any absorbed moisture, bringing back some of that satisfying crunch.
Tips for Instant Pot Popcorn Perfection
The beauty of making homemade popcorn is the freedom to customize it exactly to your liking. Whether you prefer a light dusting of seasoning or a more generous coating, these tips will help you achieve popcorn perfection every time:
- **Use a Clear Glass Lid:** This is perhaps the most crucial tip! An Instant Pot typically comes with a pressure lid, but for popcorn, you’ll need a clear glass lid (often sold separately as an accessory or you can use a standard pot lid that fits). This allows you to monitor the popping process without releasing heat, ensuring you don’t burn the kernels once the popping slows down.
- **Fresh Kernels are Key:** Always use fresh popcorn kernels for the best results. Older kernels tend to have less moisture, which is vital for them to pop, leading to more unpopped kernels and a less satisfying yield.
- **Choose the Right Oil:** As mentioned, an oil with a high smoke point is essential. Avocado oil is a fantastic choice, imparting a wonderful, slightly buttery taste to the popcorn. Other good options include peanut, coconut, or grapeseed oil.
- **Shake or Stir for Even Popping:** To help all those eager unpopped kernels get enough heat, give the Instant Pot a gentle shake or stir every minute or so during the popping phase. Sometimes, unpopped kernels get trapped under already-popped ones, preventing them from heating adequately. Moving them around ensures better heat exposure.
- **Don’t Overfill:** Resist the urge to add too many kernels. Overcrowding can lead to uneven popping and more unpopped kernels. Stick to the recommended amount for your Instant Pot size.
- **Listen Carefully:** Pay attention to the sound of the popping. When the pops become sparse (about 2-3 seconds between pops), it’s time to remove the pot from the heat to prevent burning.

Ingredients for Simple & Delicious Popcorn
You truly can’t go wrong with such simple ingredients. Whether you’re planning a cozy family movie night or simply craving a quick, satisfying snack, this recipe will have your popcorn ready in no time!
- Popcorn kernels: Choose high-quality, fresh kernels for the best pop.
- Oil: A high smoke point oil like avocado, peanut, coconut, or light olive oil.
- Seasoning of your choice (optional): Sea salt, butter, nutritional yeast, or any custom spice blends.
How To Make Instant Pot Popcorn: Step-by-Step
Timing is crucial for perfect popcorn. Keep a close eye (or ear) out to determine when the popping slows down. Don’t wait too long, as kernels can quickly begin to burn if left in the heat for excessive time.
- Prepare the Pot: Set your Instant Pot to the “Sauté” function. Immediately add your chosen oil to the inner pot.
- Heat the Oil: Allow the oil to heat up for approximately 2 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the Instant Pot display shows the word “Hot.” This ensures the oil is at the optimal temperature for popping.
- Add Kernels and Stir: Once the oil is hot, carefully add the popcorn kernels to the pot. Stir the kernels for about 1 minute to ensure they are evenly coated in the hot oil. This helps promote uniform popping.
- Cover and Pop: Place a clear glass lid (or a regular pot lid) on top of the Instant Pot. Do NOT use the pressure cooking lid. Within 2-3 minutes of heating while covered, you will begin to hear the unmistakable sound of popcorn kernels popping.
- Finish Popping & Serve: Allow the popcorn to continue popping for approximately 5 minutes, or until the popping sounds slow significantly, with 2-3 seconds between pops. Carefully remove the lid (beware of steam!). Transfer the freshly popped corn to a large serving bowl, season as desired, and enjoy your delicious homemade Instant Pot popcorn!

Essential Kitchen Supplies for Instant Pot Popcorn
Making popcorn in your Instant Pot is incredibly straightforward, but having the right tools makes the process even smoother. Make sure your Instant Pot has a “Sauté” function, as this is the primary setting we’ll be utilizing. Get ready for an effortlessly delicious snack – many agree this is truly one of the best ways to enjoy popcorn!
- Instant Pot: Any model with a “Sauté” function will work perfectly.
- Clear Glass Lid: This is highly recommended for monitoring the popping without releasing heat. If you don’t have one specific for your Instant Pot, a regular pot lid that fits snugly will also work, though you won’t be able to see inside.
- Large Bowl for Serving: You’ll need plenty of space for your fluffy, freshly popped corn!
What to Serve With Instant Pot Popcorn
Hot, freshly popped popcorn is a standalone favorite snack, especially cherished during cozy family movie nights. However, its versatility means it can also be the star of a more elaborate snack spread. Consider pairing it with other delightful treats like crunchy pretzels, savory nuts, and chewy dried fruit to effortlessly create a fun and flavorful snack mix. For an even more indulgent experience, serve it alongside:
- Sweet Treats: Chocolate candies, gummy bears, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
- Cheese & Savory Bites: A cheese board with various cheeses, olives, or miniature savory crackers.
- Refreshing Beverages: Classic soda, homemade lemonade, iced tea, or even a glass of sparkling cider.
- Dips & Spreads: Serve it with a cheesy dip, a spicy salsa, or a sweet chocolate fondue for a truly interactive snack.

Instant Pot Popcorn Recipe

Course: Snack
Servings: 4
This recipe for Instant Pot Popcorn is a simple and easy way to make your favorite movie-night snack, requiring just 2 ingredients.
Print Recipe | Pin Recipe
Prep & Cook Time
- Prep Time: 1 min
- Cook Time: 12 mins
- Total Time: 13 mins
Ingredients
- ½ cup popcorn kernels
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Optional: Seasoning of your choice (salt, sugar, spices)
Instructions
- Set the Instant Pot on “Sauté” and immediately add the oil to the inner pot.
- Allow the oil to heat up for about 2 minutes, or until the Instant Pot displays the word “Hot” before placing the popcorn kernels in the pot.
- Stir the kernels for about 1 minute to ensure even coating before placing a clear glass lid (or suitable pot lid) on top.
- In about 2-3 minutes of heating while covered, you will start to hear the popcorn kernels popping.
- Let it pop for about 5 minutes or until most of the kernels have popped and the sounds significantly slow down. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- You’ll want a clear glass lid to be able to see the popcorn kernels and ensure they’re not burning after a couple of minutes of popping. If you don’t have a glass Instant Pot lid, you’ll want to check every once in a while by carefully lifting the lid.
- If the popcorn kernels are older, they may not seem stale to you, but older kernels will not pop well, if at all, in the Instant Pot. Always use fresh kernels for the best results.
- I used avocado oil, which resulted in some luscious popcorn. However, you can use any high smoke point oil you have on hand, such as peanut, coconut, or light olive oil.
- To get a more even pop, after every minute or so of active popping, gently stir the popcorn or shake the Instant Pot to move around the kernels. Unpopped kernels sometimes rest on already popped popcorn, preventing them from getting enough heat to pop. Moving the popcorn around helps these unpopped kernels get better heat exposure.
- If you want buttery popcorn, you can add 2 tablespoons of butter with the oil at the start. Once it’s melted, you can add the popcorn kernels.
Equipment
- Instant Pot/Electric Pressure Cooker (with Sauté function)
- Clear Glass Lid (recommended)
