Why Mummy Hot Dogs Are the Perfect Halloween Treat
Mummy Dogs have earned their reputation as a quintessential Halloween snack for many fantastic reasons. They’re incredibly simple to assemble, requiring just a few basic ingredients you likely already have on hand or can easily pick up at any grocery store. Their playful appearance captures the spirit of the holiday, making them a hit with children who love the “spooky” element and adults who appreciate a nostalgic, fun finger food.
Beyond their charming aesthetic, Mummy Dogs are wonderfully versatile. You can serve them plain with classic ketchup and mustard, or get creative with a variety of dips and toppings to suit any palate. They’re also highly portable, making them an ideal candidate for Halloween potlucks, school parties, or a cozy family dinner before trick-or-treating. Their ease of preparation means you can whip up a large batch in no time, ensuring there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy without spending hours in the kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mummy Dogs
What Exactly Are Mummy Dogs?
Mummy Dogs are a playful and festive twist on classic pigs-in-a-blanket. They consist of a hot dog (or sausage) lovingly wrapped in strips of flaky, buttery dough, typically refrigerated crescent roll dough. Once baked to a golden brown perfection, the dough expands and crisps, creating the appearance of a bandaged mummy. Small gaps are left in the dough to allow for the addition of “eyes,” usually candy eyeballs or dots of mustard/ketchup, giving each mummy its unique character and a touch of spooky charm.
Can Mummy Dogs Be Baked in a Traditional Oven?
Absolutely! While our recipe focuses on the air fryer for speed and convenience, Mummy Dogs bake beautifully in a conventional oven. To prepare them in the oven, simply preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the wrapped hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is puffed up, golden brown, and cooked through. Keep a close eye on them to prevent overbrowning, as oven temperatures can vary.
What Kind of Dough Works Best for Mummy Dogs?
Refrigerated crescent roll dough is undoubtedly the most popular and easiest choice for Mummy Dogs due to its flaky texture and convenience. However, you can certainly experiment with other dough options! Pre-made biscuit dough, puff pastry, or even homemade pastry dough can work wonderfully. Each type of dough will lend a slightly different texture and flavor to your mummies, so feel free to explore and find your favorite.
Can I Use Different Types of Sausages Instead of Hot Dogs?
Yes, you can! While standard hot dogs are traditional, feel free to substitute with other types of sausages for a different flavor profile. Chicken or turkey sausages offer a leaner alternative, while bratwurst or Italian sausages can add a more robust taste. Just ensure the sausages are fully cooked before wrapping them in dough, or adjust baking times accordingly if using raw sausages, to ensure they are cooked through and safe to eat.

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Mummy Dogs
Creating these adorable and delicious Halloween treats requires just a handful of straightforward ingredients. The beauty of Mummy Dogs lies in their simplicity, making them accessible to even the most novice of cooks.
- Hot Dogs: Choose your favorite brand and type. Standard beef or pork hot dogs work perfectly, but feel free to opt for chicken, turkey, or even vegetarian hot dogs to accommodate different dietary preferences. Ensure they are fully cooked.
- Refrigerated Crescent Rolls: This is the magic ingredient that transforms hot dogs into mummies! One standard 8-ounce can usually contains enough dough for about 8 hot dogs, but check your package. Brands like Pillsbury are popular for their consistent quality and easy-to-use dough.
- Candy Eyeballs: These are crucial for giving your mummies their characteristic spooky gaze. You can find them in most baking aisles or craft stores, especially around Halloween. If you can’t find candy eyeballs, small dots of mustard, ketchup, or even cream cheese can be used as a substitute.
Creative Variations to Elevate Your Mummy Dogs
While the classic Mummy Dog is fantastic on its own, there’s plenty of room for creativity to make them uniquely yours!
- Cheesy Mummies: Before wrapping, make a slit down the center of each hot dog and insert a thin strip of cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite melty cheese. The cheese will melt beautifully, adding an extra layer of flavor.
- Spicy Mummies: For those who like a kick, spread a thin layer of sriracha mayo or a sprinkle of chili flakes on the hot dogs before wrapping. You can also use jalapeño-infused sausages.
- Mini Mummies: Use cocktail sausages (mini hot dogs) and cut your dough strips thinner and shorter. These bite-sized versions are perfect for appetizers and make snacking even easier.
- Phyllo Dough Mummies: For an extra crispy, delicate mummy, try using phyllo dough. You’ll need to work quickly as phyllo dries out fast, brushing each layer with melted butter before wrapping.
- Stuffing Fun: Beyond cheese, consider stuffing your hot dogs with finely chopped onions, pickles, or even a thin layer of cream cheese for a surprise flavor burst.

What to Serve with Your Mummy Hot Dogs
Mummy Dogs are incredibly versatile and pair well with a wide range of dips and side dishes, making them suitable for anything from a casual snack to a full Halloween-themed meal. Here are some ideas to complete your spooky spread:
Dipping Sauces:
- Classic Ketchup and Mustard: Always a crowd-pleaser and essential for those classic hot dog flavors.
- Spicy Ketchup or Sriracha Mayo: For a little heat, mix sriracha into mayo or your favorite ketchup.
- Honey Mustard: A sweet and tangy option that pairs wonderfully with the savory hot dogs and flaky dough.
- BBQ Sauce: A smoky, sweet, and savory choice that adds depth.
- Ranch Dressing: Creamy and herby, a favorite for many.
- Cheese Dip: A warm, gooey cheese dip makes for an irresistible combination. Try a homemade Smoked Queso for an extra special touch.
Side Dishes for a Complete Meal:
If you’re serving Mummy Dogs as a main course, consider these complementary sides:
- Smoked Queso: A rich and flavorful dip that also doubles as a hearty side.
- Keto Pretzel Dogs: While Mummy Dogs are not keto, if you have guests with dietary restrictions, these offer a great alternative.
- Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip: A warm, spicy dip that can be served with chips or veggie sticks.
- Air Fryer Fried Pickles: Crispy, tangy, and a fantastic contrast to the richness of the Mummy Dogs.
- Air Fryer Potato Chips: Homemade chips are always a hit and easy to make alongside your mummies.
- Simple Green Salad: A light, fresh salad can balance the meal.
- Roasted Vegetables: Carrots, broccoli, or sweet potatoes make nutritious and delicious sides.

How to Make Mummy Dogs in the Air Fryer: Step-by-Step Guide
The air fryer is a fantastic tool for making Mummy Dogs, yielding perfectly crispy dough and evenly cooked hot dogs in record time. Follow these simple steps for a quick and impressive Halloween treat.
Preparation Steps:
- Prepare Hot Dogs: Start by removing the hot dogs from their packaging. Pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels. This helps the dough adhere better and ensures a crispier finish. Set them aside.
- Unroll Dough: Carefully unroll the refrigerated crescent roll dough from its can. Lay out each rectangular section of dough flat, but do not separate the individual crescent triangles yet. You want a continuous sheet of dough.
- Seal Perforations: Gently pinch closed any perforations in the dough. This creates a smooth surface and prevents the dough from tearing during the wrapping process.
- Flatten the Dough: Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough flat to about 1/8 inch thickness. This makes it easier to cut into strips and wrap around the hot dogs.
- Cut Dough Strips: Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut the flattened dough into thin strips. Aim for strips that are approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide. Don’t worry about perfect uniformity; slightly uneven strips can add to the mummy’s rustic charm!
- Wrap the Hot Dogs: Take one hot dog and begin wrapping it with the dough strips. Start at one end and loosely wrap the dough around the hot dog, leaving small gaps to mimic a mummy’s bandages. Ensure there isn’t too much bunching or overlapping, as the dough will expand as it cooks. Leave a small section uncovered near the top where you’ll later add the mummy’s eyes.
Air Frying Instructions:
- Load the Air Fryer Basket: Once all hot dogs are wrapped, carefully place them in your air fryer basket. For easy cleanup and to prevent sticking, you can line the basket with parchment paper designed for air fryers. Make sure not to overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if necessary to allow for even airflow and browning.
- Air Fry: Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Cook for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is beautifully golden brown, puffed, and fully cooked through. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your specific air fryer model, so it’s a good idea to check on them halfway through.
- Add the Eyes: Once cooked, carefully remove the hot dogs from the air fryer. While they are still warm, gently attach two candy eyeballs to the exposed “face” area of each mummy. A tiny drop of ketchup or mustard can serve as edible “glue” to hold the eyeballs in place. Allow the glue to set slightly before serving.
- Serve and Enjoy: Your spooky, delicious Mummy Dogs are now ready! Serve them immediately with your favorite dipping sauces and watch them disappear.
Making Mummy Dogs with Mini Hot Dogs
Mini Mummy Dogs are an excellent choice for appetizers or when catering to smaller appetites. The process is almost identical to making full-sized Mummy Dogs. Simply use cocktail sausages instead of regular hot dogs. When cutting your dough, aim for thinner and shorter strips to maintain the correct mummy-to-hot dog proportion. Be mindful that mini hot dogs will cook faster due to their smaller size, so adjust your air frying or baking time accordingly, usually reducing it by a few minutes. Keep a close eye on them to ensure they don’t overcook.

Tips for Storage and Making Ahead
How Do I Store Leftover Mummy Dogs?
If you happen to have any Mummy Dogs left over (a rare occurrence!), they can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them back in the air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for a few minutes until warmed through and crispy again, or warm them in a conventional oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes. The microwave can also be used, but the dough may lose some of its crispiness.
Can Mummy Dogs Be Made Ahead of Time?
Yes, Mummy Dogs are an excellent make-ahead option, which is perfect for party planning! You can wrap the hot dogs in the dough up to 24 hours in advance. After wrapping, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover tightly with plastic wrap before refrigerating. When you’re ready to serve, simply transfer them to your air fryer or oven and cook as directed. This allows you to do most of the prep work beforehand, leaving more time for enjoying your Halloween celebrations.
Choosing the Right Air Fryer for Your Kitchen
An air fryer is a game-changer for quick and crispy snacks like Mummy Dogs. If you’re in the market for one, here are some considerations:
Small Air Fryer Options
For individuals or couples, a compact air fryer is often sufficient. We started with a smaller Phillips model, which proved perfect for single servings and quick snacks. It’s an ideal choice if kitchen space is limited or if you primarily cook for one or two people.
Medium-Sized Air Fryers for Everyday Use
As our air frying needs grew, we found a digital screen to be a valuable upgrade. Our XL air fryer from GoWISE offered greater capacity and user-friendly digital controls, often at a more accessible price point than some basic models. Its additional functions and bundled accessories made it a versatile tool for a variety of recipes, from crispy fries to perfectly cooked vegetables.
Large Air Fryers for Family & Batch Cooking
For larger families or for those who enjoy batch cooking and entertaining, a spacious air fryer is essential. When developing recipes for a second air fryer cookbook, we opted for a large, family-sized air fryer with Touch Screen Presets. This larger capacity allows for cooking more items at once, making meal preparation more efficient for gatherings and busy households.
