Festive holiday cake mix cookies for Christmas

Utilizing a **red velvet cake mix** makes these crinkle cookies an absolute dream for busy bakers. The mix provides a consistent base of flavor and texture, taking the guesswork out of measuring multiple dry ingredients. This convenience means you spend less time fussing in the kitchen and more time enjoying the magic of the season. The result is a uniformly delightful cookie every single time, perfectly soft, chewy, and boasting that signature red velvet tang that everyone adores. Whether you’re a novice baker or a seasoned pro, cake mix cookies simplify the process without compromising on taste or quality, proving that sometimes, the simplest methods yield the most impressive results.

Commonly Asked Questions About Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

Can these cookies be made ahead of time?

Absolutely! This cookie dough is wonderfully forgiving and can be prepared in advance. Simply cover the dough tightly with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days before you plan to bake. This flexibility makes holiday baking stress-free! When you’re ready to bake, let the dough sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes to soften slightly before rolling and baking. This small step ensures the dough is pliable and easy to work with.

What is the best way to store red velvet crinkle cookies?

To maintain their optimal freshness and iconic crinkle appearance, these cookies should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. They will remain soft and delicious for up to 5 days. I strongly advise against refrigerating them once they have been rolled in confectioner’s sugar and baked. The moist air in the refrigerator can cause the cookies to absorb the sugar coating, unfortunately diminishing that beautiful, distinct crinkle look that makes these cookies so special.

What makes crinkle cookies crinkle?

The magic behind the crinkle effect is a combination of coating the dough balls generously in confectioner’s sugar and the dough’s quick expansion in the oven. The thick coating of powdered sugar prevents the cookie from spreading too quickly, and as the cookie dough bakes and expands, the surface sugar cracks, creating those delightful fissures. The cornstarch in our sugar mixture further enhances this effect, helping to keep the coating intact while promoting the perfect crackle.

Can I use a different flavor of cake mix?

Yes, you absolutely can! While red velvet is a classic for its color and flavor, this 5-ingredient cake mix cookie method is incredibly versatile. You can easily substitute the red velvet cake mix with chocolate, vanilla, lemon, or even spice cake mix to create different flavored crinkle cookies. Just be aware that the color and specific flavor profile will change accordingly. For other colored crinkle cookies, you might consider adding a few drops of food coloring to the dough if the cake mix itself isn’t vibrantly colored.

Essential ingredients for Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

Simple Ingredients for Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

Achieving these delightful cookies requires just five basic ingredients, making this recipe a true testament to simplicity and flavor:

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix: The star of our show, providing the signature flavor, color, and much of the dry ingredients needed for the cookie base. Look for a standard 15.25-ounce box.
  • Eggs: Large eggs act as a binder, helping to hold the dough together and contribute to the chewy texture.
  • Butter – melted: Melted butter adds richness and moisture to the cookies, resulting in a soft and tender crumb.
  • Confectioner’s Sugar: This fine powdered sugar is essential for rolling the dough balls, creating the iconic white crinkle effect as the cookies bake.
  • Cornstarch: A secret ingredient! A small amount of cornstarch mixed with the confectioner’s sugar helps absorb moisture and gives the cookies a crisper, more pronounced crinkle, preventing the powdered sugar from dissolving into the dough too quickly.

Can these cookies be frozen?

Absolutely, these cookies are excellent for freezing, both in dough form and after baking! If you prefer to freeze the dough, roll it into balls (but do not dip them in sugar yet), then place them on a baking sheet and freeze until firm. Once solid, transfer the dough balls to an airtight container or a plastic freezer bag for long-term storage. To bake, simply remove the desired number of dough balls from the freezer, let them thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then roll them in the confectioner’s sugar and bake as directed.

You can also freeze baked cookies. Once completely cooled, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then, transfer to an airtight freezer-safe container or bag, separating layers with parchment paper. Thaw at room temperature when ready to enjoy.

Step-by-step guide on how to make Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

How to Make Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies: A Simple Guide

Follow these easy steps to create your perfect batch of festive crinkle cookies:

  1. Prepare Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C). This ensures the oven is at the correct temperature for even baking as soon as your cookies are ready.
  2. Line Baking Sheets: Line several baking sheets with parchment paper. Parchment paper prevents sticking and makes for easy cleanup. Set them aside while you prepare the dough.
  3. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, eggs, and melted butter. Use a firm rubber spatula to mix these ingredients together. Continue mixing until all the dry cake mix is fully incorporated and the dough becomes smooth, thick, and uniform in color. Avoid overmixing, which can lead to tough cookies.
  4. Prepare the Crinkle Coating: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar and cornstarch with a fork. The cornstarch is crucial here as it helps create a more defined crinkle effect by keeping the sugar from melting too quickly into the cookie dough.
  5. Scoop and Coat: Using a medium cookie scoop (about 1.5 tablespoons), scoop out portions of the dough. For a mess-free process, directly drop each scooped dough ball into the bowl with the sugar mixture. Use a fork to gently roll the dough ball around until it is thoroughly coated in the confectioner’s sugar. This technique prevents your hands from becoming sticky and ensures an even coating.
  6. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Once each dough ball is generously coated, place it onto your prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie to allow for spreading during baking.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake each baking sheet in its own batch for 9-12 minutes. Baking one sheet at a time helps ensure even heat distribution and consistent results for all your cookies. The cookies should be set around the edges but still slightly soft in the center.
  8. Cooling Process: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheet for several minutes. This allows them to firm up before you attempt to move them. Then, carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.
  9. Store and Enjoy: Once fully cooled, store your delicious red velvet crinkle cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to maintain their softness and freshness.

Can I make these cookies from scratch instead of using cake mix?

Absolutely! If you prefer a homemade touch and don’t want to use cake mix, you can certainly make red velvet crinkle cookies from scratch. For a fantastic alternative, check out my dedicated **Red Velvet Crinkle Cookie recipe**. Please note that the scratch version typically requires a chill time of at least 2 hours (sometimes even overnight) for the dough before baking to achieve the best texture and crinkle. So, plan accordingly! While it requires a bit more foresight, many find the rich, deep flavor of scratch-made cookies well worth the wait.

What if I don’t have Red Velvet Cake Mix on hand?

No red velvet cake mix? No problem! You can get creative with substitutions to achieve a similar vibrant color and delicious taste. A good alternative is to use a **German chocolate cake mix** and add 2 tablespoons of flavorless red gel food color. It’s crucial that the food color is gel-based and specifically flavorless to avoid any undesirable aftertaste, especially when using a larger quantity. Liquid food coloring can affect the dough’s consistency and may not yield the intense color you’re looking for. This substitution will give you a rich, chocolaty base with the iconic red hue.

Exciting Variations and Delicious Add-ins

Elevate your **Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies** with these fun and tasty variations:

  • Sprinkles: Add a festive touch by folding in some holiday sprinkles into the dough before rolling in sugar. Red and green sprinkles are perfect for Christmas, while pink and red ones are ideal for Valentine’s Day, matching the red velvet theme beautifully.
  • Chocolate Chips: For an extra layer of decadence, mix in a cup of white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or even mini chocolate chips into the cookie dough before you scoop and roll them in sugar. The chocolate adds a delightful textural contrast and complementary flavor.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting: While delicious on their own, a swirl of classic cream cheese frosting on top of the cooled cookies can transform them into an even more indulgent dessert, echoing the traditional red velvet cake experience.
  • Sandwich Cookies: To make these cookies truly decadent and adorable, use cream cheese frosting as a filling between two cooled cookies. They will resemble charming mini whoopie pies and offer an extra layer of delightful sweetness and texture.
  • Nutty Crunch: For a subtle crunch and earthy flavor, fold in a handful of finely chopped pecans or walnuts into the cookie dough. This pairs wonderfully with the rich red velvet taste.
  • Espresso Boost: A teaspoon of espresso powder added to the cake mix can deepen the chocolate notes in the red velvet, making the flavor even more intense and complex without tasting like coffee.
