Crafting the Perfect Oven-Baked Meatball Sandwich

Best meatballs for Meatball Sandwiches

When preparing for any event, especially a game day feast, thoughtful ingredient sourcing is key. I always make a point to visit WinCo for my shopping needs. Not only do they consistently offer competitive prices that often beat other stores, but their extensive bulk food section is a culinary dream. The sheer variety ensures I can find everything required for a delicious spread.

For these particular meatball subs, I specifically sought out Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs. I love having options, so I picked up their Abruzzese Fresh Italian Meatballs, known for their rich, savory blend. Additionally, I grabbed the Sicilian Fresh Italian Meatballs for a slightly different flavor profile, and the Mozzarella Rustica Fresh Italian Meatballs, which promise an extra cheesy dimension. This variety guarantees there’s a flavor to please every palate among my guests!

You’ll find these high-quality Carando meatballs conveniently located in the refrigerated meat section of your local WinCo or other participating grocery stores. Their availability makes this recipe incredibly accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Meatball Sandwiches

How to Keep Meatball Sandwiches Warm for a Party

Ensuring your delicious meatball subs stay warm and inviting for your guests is crucial for any party. After assembling and baking the sandwiches as directed, simply wrap each individual sandwich snugly in aluminum foil. Then, place the foil-wrapped sandwiches into a slow cooker set to its “warm” setting. This method keeps them perfectly heated without drying them out, allowing your guests to grab a hot, fresh sandwich at their leisure throughout the event. It’s a game-changer for hassle-free entertaining!

Storing and Reheating Leftover Meatball Sandwiches

Leftover meatball sandwiches are a rare treat, but if you happen to have any, proper storage is key to maintaining their deliciousness. Place any remaining sandwiches in an airtight container, or simply cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Be sure to label them with the date before refrigerating, where they will stay fresh for 2-3 days.

To reheat, transfer a sandwich or two to a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for approximately 45-90 seconds, or until thoroughly heated through. You can also rewrap in foil and bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 15-20 minutes for a crispier result.

How Many Servings Does This Recipe Yield?

This recipe, as written, typically yields 6 robust and satisfying sandwiches, utilizing a couple of packages of meatballs with a few left over for snacking or another small dish. Because these meatballs are quite hearty and flavorful, a single sandwich is usually more than enough to fully satisfy, even for those with larger appetites. You’ll find that each serving is substantial and filling, making it excellent value for effort.

Can This Meatball Sandwich Recipe Be Doubled?

Absolutely! Doubling this recipe is a fantastic idea for larger gatherings or for meal prepping. While a standard casserole dish typically fits about 6 sandwich buns, you can easily accommodate more by using a larger half-sheet pan. For best results when doubling or tripling, make sure to line your sheet pan with aluminum foil before adding your ingredients. This not only makes cleanup a breeze but also helps in even cooking. Just arrange your buns and ingredients, and you’ll have plenty of delicious meatball subs for everyone!

How to make Baked Meatball Sandwiches step-by-step

Why Choose Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs?

I consistently recommend Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs for a multitude of reasons. Beyond their delightful juiciness and delicious taste, their superior quality and robust, authentic Italian flavors are unmatched. Carando meatballs allow me to craft genuinely Italian-style meals in a fraction of the time it would take to prepare them from scratch.

They are seasoned to perfection, offering a rich depth of flavor that complements marinara sauce beautifully. This means less effort for you in the kitchen, without compromising on the gourmet experience. Whether you choose their Abruzzese, Sicilian, or Mozzarella Rustica varieties, you’re guaranteed a premium foundation for your meatball sandwiches, making every bite a truly satisfying experience.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Oven-Baked Meatball Sandwiches

Creating these incredible oven-baked meatball sandwiches is surprisingly simple. Follow these straightforward steps for a delicious and hassle-free meal:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C).
  2. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Arrange the raw Carando meatballs on the foil, ensuring they are about 1 inch apart to allow for even cooking.
  3. Bake the meatballs for 15 minutes.
  4. Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven, turn each meatball over, and return to the oven to bake for an additional 14-17 minutes, or until their internal temperature reaches 185 degrees F (85°C) and they are thoroughly cooked.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, lightly spray your casserole dish or chosen baking pan with oil or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  6. Place the hoagie rolls in the prepared dish. Line the inside of each bun with a slice of provolone cheese, ensuring it covers the base of the roll.
  7. Once the meatballs are fully cooked, transfer several into each bun, nestling them between the provolone cheese slices. (*Note: There’s no need to turn off your oven after baking the meatballs, as it will be used for the final baking step.)
  8. Generously spoon your favorite marinara sauce over the meatballs in each sandwich. Then, top each sandwich with a handful of mozzarella cheese.
  9. Bake in the preheated 375-degree F (190°C) oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is perfectly melted and bubbly.
  10. *Optional: For an extra golden-brown, slightly crispy cheese topping, broil the sandwiches for 2-5 minutes just before serving. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
  11. Prior to serving, sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and a garnish of chopped fresh parsley for added flavor and visual appeal.

What Kind of Rolls Work Best for Meatball Subs?

The choice of roll is pivotal for a great meatball sandwich. I highly recommend using a sturdy stadium roll or a robust hoagie roll rather than a softer, hot dog-style bun. The denser texture of a stadium or hoagie roll is essential because it helps to prevent the bread from becoming overly saturated with the marinara sauce. This ensures your sandwich remains structurally sound, preventing it from falling apart while you enjoy every delicious bite. A good roll provides the perfect foundation to hold all that meaty, cheesy, saucy goodness!

Do I Need to Heat the Marinara Sauce Before Adding It to the Sandwich?

One of the beauties of this recipe is its simplicity – and that extends to the marinara sauce! There’s no need to preheat the marinara sauce before adding it to the sandwiches. I simply spoon it directly from the jar over the meatballs. The baking process in the oven is more than sufficient to heat the sauce to the perfect temperature, ensuring it’s wonderfully warm and melds beautifully with the meatballs and melted cheese. This saves you an extra step and makes the preparation even quicker.

What Toppings Do You Put on a Meatball Sandwich?

While a classic meatball sub—featuring just savory meatballs, luscious marinara sauce, and gooey cheese—is often my personal preference for its pure, unadulterated flavor, the beauty of a meatball sandwich is its adaptability to various toppings! Many enthusiasts love to customize theirs. Popular additions include thinly sliced onions, either grilled until caramelized and sweet, or raw for a sharp bite. Sautéed or fried peppers, mushrooms, and black olives also make excellent additions, offering extra layers of texture and flavor. Don’t hesitate to experiment with your favorite antipasto ingredients to create your signature meatball masterpiece!
