There’s something truly special about preparing a filet mignon, an experience that transforms an ordinary meal into an extraordinary event. Not long ago, we embarked on a culinary adventure by purchasing a half cow, an endeavor that left our freezer brimming with hundreds of pounds of premium beef. This opportunity allowed us to explore various cuts and experiment with new recipes, pushing the boundaries of our cooking repertoire. Discovering how to master each cut has been an exciting journey, and the filet mignon quickly became a favorite.

When tackling new recipes, we often begin with trusted resources for foundational methods, much like consulting a classic cookbook. From there, we love to personalize dishes, adding unique twists, removing unnecessary elements, and experimenting until the recipe truly reflects our taste. While the initial cooking techniques and times might be guided by tradition, the ingredient list and subsequent adaptations become entirely our own. This iterative process allows us to refine and perfect recipes with each preparation, leading to consistently amazing results.

This Garlic Butter Filet Mignon recipe is a prime example of a dish that sounds incredibly sophisticated yet is remarkably straightforward to prepare. We were genuinely astonished by its simplicity and the speed at which it came together, especially considering the extraordinary depth of flavor and tender texture it delivered. It quickly earned a permanent spot in our meal rotation, proving that gourmet dining doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming.

The moment you experience the unparalleled tenderness and juiciness of this filet, you’ll understand its magic. A crucial decision that elevated this dish from great to truly exceptional was incorporating our special Italian garlic butter. This savory addition infused the filet with an irresistible aroma and a rich, garlicky flavor that permeated every fiber of the meat. It transformed an already magnificent cut into something truly unforgettable. In fact, it was so incredibly delicious that we found ourselves wishing we had requested more of this precious cut from the butcher, as the few pieces we had barely lasted a single dinner among our family of five.

The secret weapon for achieving a perfectly seared and cooked filet mignon at home lies in the cast iron skillet. It might sound surprising, but for a significant portion of our married life, we didn’t own one. It wasn’t until we discovered the remarkable versatility and cooking superiority of cast iron that our kitchen truly felt complete. Now, our collection boasts several sizes, and we genuinely can’t fathom cooking without them. A well-seasoned cast iron skillet doesn’t just cook food; it transforms it, making every meal, especially a premium cut like filet mignon, astonishingly flavorful and perfectly textured.

What I particularly love about this Filet Mignon recipe is its deceptive simplicity. Despite its elegant presentation and gourmet taste, it requires minimal effort, making it ideal for a variety of occasions. It’s sophisticated enough to impress guests at a dinner party, yet quick and easy enough for a cozy, romantic evening at home with your loved one. The sensation of each tender, garlic-infused bite melting in your mouth is utterly addictive. My mouth is literally watering just thinking about it – a clear sign that I need to make this again soon!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cooking Filet Mignon

Can I make this in a different type of skillet?

While I personally haven’t experimented with other types of skillets for this specific recipe, the robust nature of cast iron is central to its success. If you opt for a different skillet, ensure it’s oven-safe and can withstand high temperatures, specifically 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The unparalleled advantage of a properly seasoned cast iron skillet lies in its natural non-stick properties and its exceptional ability to distribute heat evenly, which is crucial for achieving that perfect, flavorful sear and consistent cooking throughout the filet. For the best results, a heavy-bottomed, oven-safe skillet is key.

Is filet mignon keto-friendly?

The filet mignon itself is a cut of lean beef, making it naturally low in carbs and high in protein, which aligns well with a ketogenic diet. However, for this particular recipe, the inclusion of our Italian garlic butter (which often contains dairy like parmesan) and Worcestershire sauce might introduce ingredients that are not strictly keto-compliant. If you wish to make this recipe completely keto-friendly, you would need to use a dairy-free butter alternative for the garlic butter and ensure your Worcestershire sauce is sugar-free or omit it entirely. Be aware that these modifications will alter the original flavor profile, creating a slightly different, though still delicious, dish.

What is the best way to store leftover filet mignon?

In our experience, “leftover filet mignon” is a rare occurrence! This incredible dish is usually devoured in one sitting. However, should you be fortunate enough to have any remaining, it’s essential to store it properly to maintain its freshness and flavor. Place the cooled leftover meat in a shallow, airtight container. This helps it cool quickly and prevents bacteria growth. Label the container with the date before refrigerating. When stored correctly, this Filet Mignon recipe will keep for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. To reheat, gently warm in a skillet over low heat or in a preheated oven to avoid overcooking and drying out the meat.

Where is the filet mignon cut from?

The filet mignon, highly prized for its exceptional tenderness, is expertly cut from the tenderloin. The tenderloin itself is a long, lean muscle that extends along the spine, running through two primary sections of the loin primal: the short loin, which also yields cuts like the strip steak, and the sirloin, home to the top sirloin. Because the tenderloin muscle is not weight-bearing and sees very little use, it remains incredibly soft and fine-grained, hence its reputation as the most tender cut of beef.

How many servings does this recipe provide?

This recipe is designed to generously serve between 4 to 6 individuals, assuming a standard portion size of one filet per person. However, this can certainly vary based on appetites! If you’re hosting a dinner with guests who have heartier appetites or if someone desires more than one piece of this delectable steak, you might find it serves closer to 4. It’s the perfect quantity for a memorable family dinner or an intimate gathering with another couple, ensuring everyone gets to savor this luxurious dish.

Cooking Filet Mignon in the Oven: A Key Finishing Touch

Can this recipe be doubled?

Yes, absolutely! This Filet Mignon recipe is highly adaptable and can be easily doubled if you need to feed a larger crowd. For the best results when doubling, I recommend either using a very large cast iron skillet that can accommodate all the filets without crowding, or, even better, using two separate cast iron skillets. Crowding the pan can lower the temperature and prevent a proper sear, so ensure there’s enough space between each piece of meat for optimal cooking.

How to Cook Filet Mignon to Perfection: Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. **Preheat Oven:** Begin by preheating your oven to a high temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit (230°C). This ensures the oven is ready for the final stage of cooking, creating a beautiful crust.
  2. **Bring to Room Temperature:** Remove your filet mignon steaks from the refrigerator and allow them to rest at room temperature for at least 15-30 minutes. This crucial step helps the meat cook more evenly.
  3. **Pat Dry:** Unwrap the steaks and use paper towels to thoroughly pat them dry on all sides. A dry surface is essential for achieving a perfect, deep sear, which locks in juices and flavor.
  4. **Prepare Skillet & Season:** Place the dried steaks in a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. Arrange them close together but ensure they are not touching, allowing for even searing. Drizzle with Worcestershire sauce and season generously with salt, pepper, and granulated garlic (reserve the parsley for garnish).
  5. **Sear on Stovetop:** Cook the steaks on each side for approximately 3-4 minutes over medium-high heat. Resist the urge to move them once placed; let them develop a beautiful, deep brown crust. This initial sear is vital for flavor and texture.
  6. **Finish in Oven:** Once the steaks have achieved a golden-brown sear on all sides, carefully transfer the cast iron skillet to the preheated oven. Continue to cook for 7-8 minutes for a medium-rare to medium doneness. Adjust timing based on desired doneness and steak thickness.
  7. **Add Garlic Butter & Serve:** Remove the skillet from the oven. Immediately, while the steaks are hot, top each piece with a dollop of your Italian garlic butter and a sprinkle of fresh parsley. The residual heat will melt the butter, infusing the filets with incredible aroma and flavor. Serve hot and enjoy!

Customizing Your Filet Mignon: Bacon-Wrapped Options

Can this be made wrapped with bacon?

Absolutely! Adding bacon to your filet mignon is a fantastic way to introduce an extra layer of savory flavor and richness, not to mention a beautiful presentation. If you’d like to prepare your fresh filet wrapped in bacon, simply take a strip of high-quality bacon and wrap it snugly around the circumference of each filet. Secure the bacon with a wooden toothpick to ensure it stays in place during cooking. Once the bacon is secured, you can proceed with the rest of the recipe as written, following the searing and oven-finishing steps. The bacon will crisp up, rendering its fat and imparting its delicious smoky essence into the tender filet, creating an even more indulgent experience.

Resting/Warming to room temp 15 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4-6 cuts of Filet Mignon You want them to fit closely in the skillet without touching.
  • 2-3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp salt divided evenly among the pieces
  • 2 tsp pepper divided evenly among the pieces
  • 2 tsp granulated garlic divided evenly among the pieces
  • 4-6 tsp Italian Garlic Butter for serving, one tsp per filet
  • Sprinkle of parsley for serving and garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (230°C).
  2. Take your Filet Mignon steaks out of the refrigerator and let them sit for at least 30 minutes to come to room temperature.
  3. Unwrap the steaks and thoroughly pat them dry with paper towels. Dry meat will sear much better and create a crispier crust.
  4. Place the steaks in a seasoned cast iron skillet. Ensure they are close together but not touching, to allow for proper searing.
  5. Add in your Worcestershire sauce and season the steaks with salt, pepper, and granulated garlic.
  6. Cook each side of the steaks for approximately 3-4 minutes. Importantly, place them down and leave them undisturbed to achieve a beautiful sear – avoid moving them around.
  7. Once the meat has browned and developed a crust on all sides, it’s time to transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Cook for an additional 7-8 minutes for medium-rare to medium doneness.
  8. Remove the skillet from the oven. Immediately, while the steaks are still hot, add a generous dollop of your Italian garlic butter and a sprinkle of fresh parsley to the top of each piece. The butter will melt and infuse the steaks with incredible flavor.

Notes

**To make this into steak bites:** Slice the Filet Mignon into small, bite-sized pieces. Brown them for several minutes in the cast iron skillet until cooked to your desired doneness. Due to their small size, they should cook very quickly and typically won’t require additional baking time in the oven.

**To make the steak bites in the air fryer:** Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Cook the steak bites for 10-16 minutes, making sure to flip them every few minutes to ensure even cooking and browning.
