Common Questions About Peanut Butter Cinnamon Rolls
What is the difference between cinnamon rolls and cinnamon buns?
While often used interchangeably, there’s a subtle distinction between cinnamon rolls and cinnamon buns, primarily in their form and often their texture. Cinnamon rolls, like these peanut butter and jam delights, are typically characterized by their distinctive spiral shape, formed by rolling up a flattened dough filled with a sweet mixture. They are usually topped with a creamy, often vanilla-flavored, icing or glaze. Cinnamon buns, on the other hand, can sometimes be less uniform in shape and are not always rolled into a tight spiral. They may feature additional ingredients like nuts or raisins baked into the dough or scattered on top, and are often finished with a sticky, caramel-like glaze rather than a creamy icing.
What does pouring heavy cream on cinnamon rolls do?
The secret to exceptionally moist and tender cinnamon rolls often lies in a simple trick: pouring heavy cream over them before baking. This seemingly small step has a significant impact on the final texture. As the rolls bake, the heavy cream seeps into the dough, imparting a rich, buttery flavor and preventing them from drying out. The high fat content of the cream contributes to an incredibly soft crumb and a wonderfully moist interior, making each bite melt in your mouth. It’s a game-changer for achieving that perfect, bakery-quality texture.

Why are my homemade cinnamon rolls tough?
There are a few common culprits behind tough homemade cinnamon rolls. The most frequent issue is using too much flour. Over-flouring can lead to a dense, dry dough that lacks the desired softness. To prevent this, always measure your flour precisely, ideally using a kitchen scale for accuracy, or by spooning flour into your measuring cup and leveling it off. Avoid scooping directly from the bag, as this can compact the flour. Another factor is over-kneading the dough; while kneading develops gluten for structure, excessive kneading can make the gluten strands too tight, resulting in a tough texture. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, but stop as soon as it reaches that point. Finally, insufficient rising time can also contribute to toughness. Make sure your dough has enough time to double in size in a warm environment, allowing the yeast to properly work and create a light, airy texture.
Storage Tips for Your Delicious Rolls
These peanut butter cinnamon rolls are perfect for making ahead of time or enjoying throughout the week. Proper storage ensures they stay fresh and delicious.
Make Ahead (Unbaked): If you want to prepare these rolls in advance, you can assemble them and store them unbaked in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. After removing them from the fridge, allow them ample time to rise at room temperature until doubled in size before placing them in the oven to bake. This pre-preparation is a fantastic way to enjoy warm, fresh rolls with minimal morning effort.
Refrigerator (Baked): Once baked and cooled, store leftover cinnamon rolls in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in plastic wrap. They will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Reheat gently in the microwave or oven for a warm, soft texture.
Freezer (Baked): For longer storage, freeze baked cinnamon rolls for up to 2 months. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then place them in a ziploc bag or a freezer-safe container. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature, then reheat for a delightful treat.

Tips for Baking the Best Peanut Butter Cinnamon Rolls
Achieving bakery-worthy cinnamon rolls at home is easier than you think with these expert tips:
- Choose Creamy Peanut Butter: For a smooth, even spread across your dough, always opt for creamy peanut butter. Chunky varieties won’t spread as easily and can tear the delicate dough, making rolling more difficult.
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure all your ingredients, especially milk, butter, and eggs, are at room temperature before you begin. This helps them combine more uniformly, activate the yeast effectively, and creates a smoother, more consistent dough.
- Icing While Hot: As soon as your cinnamon rolls emerge from the oven, drench them with the prepared icing. The warmth of the rolls will slightly melt the icing, allowing it to seep into every crevice, creating that irresistible gooey texture.
- Warm Water Bath for Rising: If your kitchen is cool, place the covered bowl of dough in a warm water bath (a larger bowl filled with warm water) to encourage a faster and more consistent rise. Just be careful not to make the water too hot, as it can kill the yeast.

How to Make Peanut Butter Cinnamon Rolls: A Step-by-Step Guide
Patience is key, as allowing the dough to rise properly is crucial for fluffy results. Follow these detailed steps to create your perfect batch:
- In a large bowl of a stand mixer (or a large mixing bowl if using a hand mixer), whisk together 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and the active dry yeast. Set this mixture aside.
- In a small saucepan, combine the milk, unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and salt. Heat over medium-low heat until the mixture reaches approximately 120°F (49°C). The butter should be melted. Remove the pan from the heat.
- Carefully pour the warm milk mixture into the flour and yeast mixture in the stand mixer bowl.
- Using the paddle attachment, mix on low speed. Gradually add the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
- Switch to the dough hook attachment on your stand mixer.
- Continue kneading the dough on low speed, gradually adding the remaining 2 ½ cups of flour, one cup at a time, until the dough comes together.
- Once all the flour has been added, increase the mixer speed to medium and continue kneading for approximately 3 minutes, or until a soft, elastic dough forms.
- Lightly grease a clean large bowl with coconut, vegetable, or canola oil. Transfer the dough to this bowl, turning it once to ensure all sides are coated with oil.
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size, which typically takes about 1 ½ hours.
- Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release the air. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Cover the dough again with the towel and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll.
- Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately 20 inches long by 10 inches wide. Aim for an even thickness.
- Evenly spread the creamy peanut butter over the entire surface of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border along one of the long edges clean (this will help seal the roll).
- Next, spread your chosen jam (strawberry is classic!) over the layer of peanut butter, again keeping the 1-inch border free of filling.
- Starting from the long side opposite the clean border, tightly roll the dough towards the un-filled edge. Work carefully to keep the roll snug without stretching the dough too much. Once rolled, pinch the seam firmly to seal it shut.
- Using a serrated knife or unflavored dental floss, cut the rolled dough into 12 even slices. A good technique is to cut the roll in half, then cut each half in half, and then each of those quarters into three slices.
- Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish (with tall sides) with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the sliced rolls in the prepared pan, leaving about one inch of space between each roll to allow for expansion.
- Cover the pan with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and return it to a warm place. Let the rolls rise again until doubled in size, which should take approximately 40 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the rolls have completed their second rise, bake them for 25 to 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and cooked through.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare your luscious icing. In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is silky smooth and free of lumps.
- Once the peanut butter cinnamon rolls are golden brown and baked to perfection, remove them from the oven. Immediately spread the prepared icing generously over the hot rolls. This allows the icing to melt slightly and coat every delicious swirl. Serve warm and enjoy!

What to Serve With Peanut Butter and Jelly Cinnamon Rolls
While these delightful PB&J cinnamon rolls are certainly a treat on their own, pairing them with the right accompaniments can elevate your breakfast or dessert experience:
- Beverages: A warm, comforting drink is the perfect companion. Consider a rich hot chocolate (especially our cinnamon roll hot chocolate for extra indulgence!), a freshly brewed cup of coffee, or simply a glass of cold milk to cut through the sweetness.
- Ice Cream: Transform these breakfast delights into an evening dessert by serving them warm with a scoop of your favorite vanilla or coffee ice cream. The contrast of warm rolls and cold ice cream is absolutely divine.
- Fresh Fruit: For a lighter, balanced pairing, add a side of fresh fruit. A vibrant fruit salad featuring berries, melon, or sliced bananas complements the sweetness of the rolls without overwhelming them.

- Nutella Swirl: For a decadent twist, switch out the creamy peanut butter for a hazelnut chocolate spread like Nutella. The rich, nutty flavor pairs wonderfully with fruit jam or a simple glaze.
- Candy Crunch: Instead of jam, sprinkle mini chocolate chips, chopped peanut butter cups, or even a mix of your favorite candies over the peanut butter layer before rolling. This adds a delightful texture and extra sweetness.
- Peanut Butter Glaze: Elevate your icing by making a special peanut butter glaze. Simply warm a tablespoon or two of creamy peanut butter and whisk it into your confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract mixture until smooth.

- Starting on the long side, roll the dough up, working it tightly but without pulling the dough too much. Seal the long edge by pinching it shut.
- Cut the dough into 12 even slices by cutting the dough in half, cutting those halves in half and then the quarters into three slices each.
- Spray a 9×13 baking pan/dish with tall sides with non-stick cooking spray. Place each roll in the pan, allowing about one inch between them.
- Cover and allow to rise in a warm place about 40 minutes or until doubled.
