Frequently Asked Questions About Turkey & Rice Soup
We’ve gathered some common questions to help you make this Crock Pot Turkey and Rice Soup perfectly every time. From ingredient choices to serving suggestions, we’ve got you covered!
Do I have to use both noodles and rice?
No, you definitely don’t! The recipe calls for both to make the soup incredibly hearty and filling, which is especially great when feeding a larger family or five adult-sized appetites. However, feel free to omit either the noodles or the rice based on your preference or what you have on hand. If you opt for just noodles, consider using a bit more to maintain the soup’s substantial texture. If you go with only rice, ensure it’s cooked separately before adding it to avoid it absorbing too much broth and becoming mushy during the long cook time.
Can this recipe be doubled?
Absolutely! We often double this recipe ourselves, not just for feeding a crowd but also for enjoying delicious leftovers the next day. A double batch means you can effortlessly pack lunches or have another easy dinner ready without any additional cooking. It’s incredibly convenient, especially after a busy day like shoveling the driveway or running errands!
Can I use raw turkey in my slow cooker?
While some slow cooker recipes use raw poultry, this specific recipe is designed for cooked, shredded turkey leftovers. Using already cooked turkey ensures it doesn’t dry out during the long cook time and provides that wonderful pre-existing flavor. If you only have raw turkey, we recommend cooking and shredding it first, perhaps by poaching or baking, before adding it to the crock pot with the other ingredients.
What kind of rice works best?
This recipe calls for cooked white rice, which tends to be lighter and quicker to cook, integrating well with the soup’s texture. You can use long-grain or medium-grain white rice. If you prefer brown rice, keep in mind it has a chewier texture and a nuttier flavor, and it will likely need to be cooked longer or fully cooked before adding to the soup, as it absorbs more liquid. Basmati or jasmine rice can also be used for a slightly aromatic touch.
How long does Crock Pot Turkey and Rice Soup last?
When stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, this soup will typically last for 3-4 days. It’s often even more flavorful the next day as the ingredients continue to meld together.
Can I freeze Turkey and Rice Soup?
Yes, you can! This soup freezes beautifully, making it an excellent meal prep option. Allow the soup to cool completely, then transfer it to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Crock Pot Turkey & Rice Soup
Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 4 cups turkey/chicken broth
- 1 chicken bouillon cube (or 1 tsp granulated)
- 3 cups cooked turkey leftovers – shredded
- 1/2 cup grated carrots I prep mine ahead of time & freeze so I can grab & toss in when needed
- 1 tbsp minced dried onions (or 1/2 cup fresh diced)
- 1 cup cooked white rice
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 1/2 tbsp minced garlic (about 1-2 cloves)
- 1 bag of egg noodles 6 ounce, or about 2 cups uncooked
Instructions
-
In your slow cooker, combine the shredded cooked turkey, chicken or turkey broth, water, chicken bouillon cube, grated carrots, minced dried onions, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Stir everything together gently to ensure it’s well mixed.
-
Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours, stirring occasionally if possible. This allows the flavors to truly meld and develop into a rich, savory broth.
-
After the initial 4 hours of cooking, carefully add the egg noodles to the soup. Give it a good stir, ensuring the noodles are submerged in the liquid. Cover again and continue to cook for another 20-30 minutes, or until the egg noodles are tender.
-
While the noodles are cooking, prepare your white rice if it’s not already cooked. (I find my rice cooker is perfect for this step – it usually takes about 40 minutes, which is just enough time to soften those noodles you just added to your soup!)
-
Once the rice is cooked and the noodles are tender, add the cooked rice into the soup. Stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings (salt and pepper) if needed.
-
Your comforting Crock Pot Turkey and Rice Soup is now ready to serve! Ladle into bowls and enjoy a delicious, homemade meal.
