Common Questions About Bronuts

What Are Brownie Donuts or Bronuts? Are Bronuts the Same As Broughnuts?

Bronuts are truly a genius culinary invention, representing a perfect fusion of two beloved dessert classics: brownies and donuts. They deliver the rich, intensely chocolatey flavor and signature fudgy, dense texture of a brownie, but in the iconic, delightful ring shape of a donut. Instead of being fried like traditional donuts, bronuts are typically baked in a donut pan, resulting in a slightly lighter yet still incredibly moist and tender cake-like treat. This baking method also makes them a bit less guilt-inducing and much easier to prepare at home without the mess of deep-frying.

It’s important to clarify that bronuts are distinctly different from “broughnuts.” While the names might sound similar, broughnuts are an entirely different hybrid – a delightful cross between a flaky, buttery croissant and a sweet, often glazed donut. Broughnuts focus on layers of pastry, reminiscent of a cronut, offering a crispy, airy texture. Bronuts, on the other hand, prioritize the deep, moist, and chewy characteristics of a brownie. So, to recap: Bronut brings together the decadent brownie and the classic donut, while broughnut merges croissant flakiness with donut sweetness. They both offer unique textural and flavor experiences, but they are certainly not the same! Understanding the difference helps appreciate the unique charm of each.

Which Kind Of Donut Pan Should I Use To Make Brownie Donuts?

Choosing the right donut pan is crucial for achieving beautifully shaped and easily removable bronuts. For the best results, I highly recommend using a high-quality non-stick donut pan. These pans are designed to release baked goods effortlessly, minimizing the chances of your bronuts sticking and breaking apart when you try to remove them. A sturdy metal non-stick pan will conduct heat evenly, ensuring your bronuts bake consistently throughout.

Alternatively, silicone donut pans are also an excellent choice and have become increasingly popular. Their flexible nature makes removing the bronuts incredibly easy – often you can just pop them right out with a gentle push from the bottom. However, even with silicone, a light coat of cooking spray is your best friend. I’ve found that some batters, especially rich brownie batters, can still cling a bit without that extra layer of non-stick protection. So, regardless of whether you choose metal or silicone, always remember to generously spray your pan with cooking spray before pouring in the brownie batter. This simple step will save you a lot of frustration and guarantee perfectly intact, gorgeous bronuts every single time.

Why Did My Brownie Donuts Turn Out Dry/Crumbly?

Achieving the perfect fudgy and moist bronut texture is key to their irresistible appeal. If your brownie donuts turn out dry or crumbly, it’s most commonly due to a couple of factors related to baking time or batter consistency. The number one culprit for dry baked goods is overbaking. Every oven can vary slightly in temperature, so relying solely on the recipe’s recommended baking time isn’t always foolproof. Always keep a close eye on your bronuts while they’re in the oven and begin checking for doneness a few minutes before the recipe suggests. A good indicator for brownies (and bronuts) is when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.

Another reason for a crumbly texture might be an imbalance in the liquid content of your brownie mixture. If the batter is too dry to begin with, the resulting bronuts will naturally lack moisture. Ensure you’re measuring your ingredients accurately, especially the liquids. Sometimes, even using a slightly different brand of brownie mix can alter the ideal liquid ratio. If your batter seems unusually thick, consider adding a tablespoon or two more water or oil, just enough to achieve a smooth, pourable (but not runny) consistency. Proper mixing is also important – avoid overmixing, which can develop gluten too much and lead to a tougher, drier texture. Aim for just combined ingredients for that perfect fudgy bronut.

Storage

Once you’ve experienced the pure delight of a freshly baked bronut, you’ll want to make sure you can enjoy them for as long as possible! My husband, my loyal (and very enthusiastic) taste-tester, once described the experience as stepping into “brownie-donut heaven!” To ensure every bite remains as heavenly as the first, proper storage is essential.

Refrigerator

If you’ve managed to resist eating them all in one sitting, your bronuts can be conveniently stored in the refrigerator. Place them in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out or absorbing other food odors. Stored this way, they will remain fresh and delicious for up to one week. For the absolute best taste and texture, allow them to come back to room temperature for about 15-30 minutes before serving. This softens the chocolate and restores their delightful chewiness.

Alternatively, if you prefer to keep them at room temperature, store them in a single layer in an airtight container. They will stay fresh and perfectly enjoyable for up to 2 days, making them a great make-ahead treat for brunches or quick desserts.

Freezer

For long-term enjoyment, bronuts freeze exceptionally well! This is perfect for batch baking or saving some for a future craving. To freeze, ensure they are completely cooled and the ganache (if applied) is fully set. Place them in an airtight freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty freezer bag, separating layers with parchment paper if stacking. They can be stored in the freezer for up to two months without losing their quality.

To thaw, simply remove the desired number of bronuts from the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for several hours until fully defrosted. You can also gently warm them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds for a warm, gooey treat, but be careful not to overheat. Planning ahead for thawing will ensure you have a delightful chocolatey indulgence ready whenever the mood strikes!

Tips for Perfect Bronuts

While making bronuts is relatively straightforward, a few key tips can elevate your baking experience and ensure truly spectacular results every time. Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to the art of dipping the bronuts into the glaze – sometimes it feels like a delicate dance to keep them from falling right in! Here are some expert tips to help you along the way:

  • Don’t Overmix Your Brownie Batter: This is a golden rule for any brownie-based recipe. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, which can lead to tough, rubbery bronuts instead of the desired fudgy and tender texture. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined and no dry streaks of flour remain. A few small lumps are perfectly fine and often preferred.
  • Experiment with Chocolate Chips for the Glaze: For a delightful twist on the classic chocolate ganache, don’t hesitate to use different types of chocolate chips. White chocolate chips can create a beautiful contrast, while dark chocolate chips will intensify the rich chocolate flavor. You could even use milk chocolate for a sweeter, creamier glaze.
  • Always Spray Your Donut Pan: Even if you’re using a high-quality non-stick pan or a flexible silicone mold, a light but thorough coating of cooking spray is absolutely essential. This creates an extra barrier that ensures your bronuts release cleanly and easily after baking, preventing any frustrating sticking or tearing.
  • Fill Pans Accurately: Avoid overfilling or underfilling your donut cavities. Aim to fill each cavity about two-thirds full. This allows enough room for the bronuts to rise without overflowing, ensuring they maintain their distinctive donut shape.
  • Cool Completely Before Glazing: Patience is a virtue here! Ensure your bronuts are completely cool before attempting to dip them into the warm ganache. If the bronuts are still warm, the glaze will melt and slide off, creating a messy rather than perfectly coated finish.

Simple Ingredients for Decadent Bronuts

One of the best aspects of this bronut recipe is its simplicity, largely thanks to the use of a good quality brownie mix. This approach drastically cuts down on preparation time without compromising on flavor or texture. You’ll be amazed at how easily these few ingredients come together to create something so incredibly delicious. Below is the full list of ingredients you’ll need. Be sure to check out the detailed recipe card further down for exact measurements and any specific notes!

  • Brownie Mix: The star of our show! Any standard boxed brownie mix will work beautifully. Choose your favorite brand or flavor profile – fudgy, chewy, or cakey – as it will form the base of your bronuts. Using a mix ensures consistent results and saves time on measuring dry ingredients.
  • Eggs: Essential for binding the ingredients, adding moisture, and contributing to the rich, cake-like texture of the bronuts. They help the batter rise and achieve that perfect density.
  • Vegetable Oil: Provides moisture and helps create the signature fudgy texture that makes brownies so irresistible. It also contributes to the tender crumb of the bronuts.
  • Water: Used to thin the brownie batter to the correct consistency, making it pourable into the donut pan cavities and ensuring a smooth, evenly baked product.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: These are for our glorious ganache glaze. Semi-sweet chocolate provides a balanced chocolate flavor that isn’t overly sugary, perfect for coating the rich bronuts.
  • Heavy Cream: The essential component for creating a smooth, rich, and glossy chocolate ganache. The high fat content of heavy cream provides the luxurious texture that makes the glaze so decadent.
  • Vanilla Extract: An optional but highly recommended addition to the ganache. A touch of vanilla enhances the overall chocolate flavor and adds a warm, aromatic depth to the glaze.
How to make Bronuts from brownie mix step-by-step

Pro Tip for Effortless Baking

One of the trickiest parts of making baked donuts is cleanly and efficiently getting the batter into the donut pan cavities. After much experimentation, I’ve discovered a game-changing tool: a pancake batter dispenser. This simple gadget makes the process incredibly easy and remarkably mess-free. Just pour your prepared brownie batter into the dispenser, and with a gentle squeeze of the handle, you can perfectly fill each donut well to the ideal level, usually about two-thirds full, without any drips or spills. It saves so much time and keeps your kitchen much cleaner!

You can often find these handy dispensers on Amazon, but they might also be available at other online retailers or in well-stocked kitchen supply stores. For those curious about the donut pans I personally use, I’ve had great success with these silicone donut pans. They offer excellent non-stick properties and make releasing the bronuts a breeze, especially when paired with a light coating of cooking spray.

How to Make Irresistible Bronuts: Step-by-Step Guide

It’s true, you might describe these delectable treats as essentially round brownies dipped in a glorious glaze, and you wouldn’t be wrong! But I promise you, the unique experience of a baked brownie in donut form, combined with that luscious ganache, will absolutely knock your socks off with its pure, unadulterated chocolatey amazingness. Follow these simple steps to create your own batch of heavenly bronuts:

Part 1: Preparing and Baking the Bronuts

  1. Preheat Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 175 degrees Celsius). This ensures the oven is at the correct temperature for even baking as soon as your batter is ready.
  2. Prepare the Donut Pan: Take a 12-count donut pan and liberally spritz each cavity with cooking oil or non-stick spray. Even if your pan is non-stick or silicone, this extra step is crucial for easy removal of your baked bronuts. Set the prepared pan aside.
  3. Mix the Brownie Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine your chosen brownie mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water. Using an electric mixer on low speed or a whisk, mix these ingredients until the batter is smooth and well combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few small lumps are acceptable.
  4. Fill the Donut Pan: This step is critical for perfectly shaped bronuts. You have a few options: you can carefully spoon the batter into each donut cavity, transfer the batter to a piping bag (snip off the tip) and squeeze it in, or my personal favorite, use a measuring cup with an easy-pour spout or a pancake batter dispenser. Fill each donut cavity about two-thirds full to allow for proper rising without overflowing.
  5. Bake and Cool: Place the filled donut pan into your preheated oven and bake for approximately 13-14 minutes. Baking times can vary, so start checking at 12 minutes. The bronuts are done when a toothpick inserted into one comes out with moist crumbs. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and let the bronuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes. This allows them to set slightly before you gently remove them and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling on a wire rack ensures air circulation, preventing the bottoms from becoming soggy.

Part 2: Crafting the Silky Chocolate Glaze

The creamy chocolate ganache is what truly elevates these bronuts. It’s surprisingly easy to make and adds a professional finish.

  1. Prepare Chocolate Chips: Place your semi-sweet chocolate chips into a medium-sized, heat-safe bowl. Make sure the bowl is completely dry to avoid any issues with the chocolate.
  2. Heat the Heavy Cream: Pour the heavy cream into a microwave-safe glass or measuring cup. Heat it in the microwave for 50-70 seconds, or until it is just steaming around the edges but absolutely NOT BOILING. Boiling cream can scorch the chocolate and alter the ganache’s texture.
  3. Combine and Soften: Immediately pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips in the bowl. Resist the urge to stir! Let the mixture sit undisturbed for about 3 minutes. This allows the residual heat from the cream to gently melt and soften the chocolate chips.
  4. Stir to Smoothness: After 3 minutes, begin stirring the mixture gently with a whisk or spatula, starting from the center and slowly working your way outwards. Continue stirring until the chocolate glaze is completely silky, smooth, and lump-free.
  5. Add Vanilla: Gently stir in the vanilla extract (if using). This enhances the chocolate flavor and adds a lovely aromatic touch.
  6. Thicken Before Decorating: Allow the ganache to sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. This resting period allows it to thicken slightly, achieving the perfect consistency for dipping and coating the bronuts without being too thin or too thick.

Part 3: Decorating Your Bronuts

Now for the fun and artistic part – decorating your beautifully baked bronuts! This is where you can truly make them your own.

  1. Dip in Ganache: Once the bronuts are completely cool and the ganache has thickened, gently dip the top half of each bronut into the chocolate ganache. Allow any excess ganache to drip off before placing the bronut back onto the wire rack. The wire rack allows air to circulate, helping the chocolate ganache to set evenly.
  2. Add Toppings Immediately: While the chocolate ganache is still wet, quickly add any desired toppings or sprinkles. Colorful jimmies, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, or even a drizzle of contrasting white chocolate can make your bronuts extra special and visually appealing.
  3. Allow to Set and Store: Let the decorated bronuts sit on the wire rack at room temperature until the chocolate ganache is completely set, which typically takes about 30-60 minutes depending on your room temperature and ganache consistency. Once set, you can store them in a single layer in an airtight container for up to 2 days at room temperature, or follow the refrigeration/freezing instructions above for longer storage.

Essential Kitchen Supplies for Making Bronuts

Making bronuts doesn’t require a kitchen full of specialized equipment, but having a few key tools on hand will make the process much smoother and more enjoyable. These are the basic kitchen supplies you’ll need to successfully create your delicious batch of brownie donuts:

  • Large Mixing Bowl: Essential for combining your brownie batter ingredients. A spacious bowl allows for easy mixing without spills.
  • 12-Count Donut Pan: This is arguably the most crucial piece of equipment. A standard 12-count donut pan will give you perfectly shaped bronuts. Both metal non-stick and silicone versions work well.
  • Piping Bag or Measuring Cup with Pour Spout: These tools are incredibly helpful for neatly portioning the brownie batter into the donut pan cavities, minimizing mess and ensuring even filling.
  • Pancake Batter Dispenser (Optional but Recommended): As mentioned in our pro tip, a batter dispenser is an excellent optional tool that simplifies filling the donut pan and keeps your workspace clean.
  • Wire Cooling Rack: Indispensable for cooling the bronuts evenly after baking and for allowing the chocolate ganache to set properly after dipping. Good air circulation prevents soggy bottoms.
  • Whisk or Electric Mixer: For smoothly combining your brownie batter and thoroughly mixing your chocolate ganache.
  • Microwave-Safe Glass or Measuring Cup: For heating the heavy cream to create your silky ganache.

What to Serve With Bronuts

Bronuts are undeniably delicious on their own, a perfect self-contained treat that satisfies any chocolate craving. However, they are also incredibly versatile and can be paired with various accompaniments to elevate the dessert experience even further. For a truly indulgent dessert that feels gourmet, try serving them warm with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla bean ice cream. The contrast between the warm, fudgy bronut and the cold, smooth ice cream is simply divine. A drizzle of rich caramel sauce or a dollop of freshly whipped cream can also add another layer of decadence.

Beyond dessert, bronuts make a fantastic addition to a breakfast or brunch spread. They pair perfectly with a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee, where the slight bitterness of the coffee beautifully balances the sweetness of the bronut, making for a wonderfully sweet start to your day. For a lighter pairing, a cold glass of milk or a fruit smoothie can complement their rich chocolate flavor. No matter how you choose to enjoy them, bronuts are sure to be a delightful addition to your table!

  • Different Glazes: While chocolate ganache is king, try different glazes! A luscious white chocolate glaze provides a beautiful visual contrast and a sweeter profile. A rich caramel glaze offers a buttery, nutty flavor that pairs wonderfully with chocolate. You could also make a peanut butter glaze or a coffee-infused glaze.
  • Crunchy Toppings: Elevate the texture by sprinkling various toppings on top of the wet glaze. Consider crushed nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds), mini chocolate chips (milk, dark, or white), toasted coconut flakes, or even crushed candy bars for an extra layer of flavor and crunch.
  • Flavor Boosters in the Batter: Infuse your bronuts with extra flavor right in the batter. Add a teaspoon of instant coffee or espresso powder to your brownie mix for a mocha twist that deepens the chocolate flavor without tasting distinctly like coffee. A pinch of cayenne pepper can add a subtle, exciting kick for a Mexican chocolate vibe.
  • Mix-Ins: Fold in some delightful extras to your brownie batter before baking. Mini marshmallows, chocolate chunks, peanut butter chips, or even chopped Oreos can add pockets of deliciousness throughout your bronuts.
  • Donut Holes: If you have the right equipment (like a mini muffin tin or a specialized donut hole pan), consider making bronut holes! These bite-sized morsels are perfect for sharing, easier to eat, and just as delicious as their full-sized counterparts. It couldn’t hurt to try, right?
