Crispy Air Fryer Churro Cannoli

Welcome to a delightful fusion where the crispy, cinnamon-sugar embrace of a churro meets the creamy, sweet heart of a cannoli! Our Air Fryer Churro Cannoli offers everything you adore about this classic Italian dessert, but with an exciting Mexican-inspired twist and the effortless convenience of your air fryer. Imagine a perfectly crisp shell, air-fried to golden perfection, then generously coated in a shimmering blend of cinnamon and sugar. It’s reminiscent of a classic Italian *cartocci*, yet retains that beloved, handheld cannoli size. Each bite delivers a symphony of textures and flavors, making these treats not just delicious, but truly unforgettable.

Do you find yourself drawn to the irresistible charm of traditional cannoli? That delicate, tender shell overflowing with a rich, sweet cream filling? It’s a timeless pleasure. One day, while experimenting with our traditional cannoli recipe in the air fryer, my friend and I had a spark of inspiration. What if we infused this Italian favorite with the vibrant flavors of a churro? The result was nothing short of spectacular, especially fitting for celebrations like Cinco de Mayo. And for those who adore classic churros, don’t miss our authentic Churro Recipe!

Air Fryer Churro Cannoli: Crispy, cinnamon-sugar coated shells filled with sweet, spiced ricotta cream.

Our Churro Cannoli journey didn’t stop at simply dusting the shells with cinnamon and sugar. While that alone is undeniably scrumptious, we wanted to elevate the experience even further by incorporating a subtle hint of spice into the creamy filling. As self-proclaimed cinnamon aficionados in this household, the decision was an easy one.

I playfully attribute my son’s lifelong cinnamon obsession to my daily indulgence in a cinnamon roll from Sweetie Pies during my pregnancy. Regardless of its origin, the addition of cinnamon to the ricotta cream proved to be a stroke of genius, creating a harmonious blend of traditional Italian and Mexican flavors. This innovative twist has truly redefined my cannoli experience; I’m not sure I can ever go back to a purely traditional version!

Crafting Homemade Cannoli with a Churro Twist

Mexican dessert recipes for Churro Cannoli, showcasing a delectable fusion.

Making homemade churro cannoli might sound daunting, but with the air fryer, it becomes a remarkably accessible and enjoyable baking project. The process involves creating a simple dough, shaping it around cannoli forms, air frying for that signature crispness, and then filling with a rich, spiced ricotta cream. The beauty of this recipe lies in its ability to deliver authentic flavors and textures without the fuss and mess of deep-frying.

Commonly Asked Questions About Churro Cannoli

Can These Cannoli Shells Be Made Without Marsala Wine?

Absolutely! If you prefer not to use Marsala (a cooking wine), you have excellent alternatives. Red wine vinegar can be used as a replacement, offering a similar tang with only a trace amount of alcohol that typically cooks out. For a completely alcohol-free option, apple cider vinegar works wonderfully, providing the necessary acidity to help achieve that perfect dough texture and flavor balance.

How to Store Cannoli for Optimal Freshness

Once filled, cannoli are best enjoyed immediately. The creamy ricotta filling can quickly cause the crisp shells to become soggy if left for an extended period. Therefore, we do not recommend storing assembled cannoli. For the best texture and taste, prepare your filling and shells separately. Unfilled cannoli shells can be stored on a paper towel in an airtight container at room temperature for several days. Simply fill them right before you plan to serve, ensuring every bite is as fresh and crisp as possible.

Mastering the Air Fryer Cannoli Shell

Crispy churros cannoli shells made in an air fryer, coated with cinnamon sugar.

The secret to these sensational churros cannoli lies in the shell. While traditional cannoli shells are deep-fried, the air fryer offers a healthier and easier alternative without compromising on that coveted crunch. Air frying creates a beautifully blistered and crisp shell that mimics the deep-fried version surprisingly well. The key is to ensure an even cook and proper cooling to maintain their structural integrity before filling.

Understanding the Wonders of Air Frying

Although air fryers might seem like a modern kitchen marvel, their core technology is rooted in a well-established concept: convection cooking. Essentially, an air fryer acts as a compact countertop convection oven. It employs a powerful fan to circulate extremely hot air rapidly around your food within its confined cooking chamber. This continuous circulation of hot air ensures that heat is distributed evenly, leading to more uniformly cooked food and significantly reduced cooking times compared to conventional ovens.

This method of circulating hot air, which carries fine oil droplets from a light misting applied before cooking, effectively creates a crispy, golden-brown exterior. This process eliminates the need for submerging foods in large quantities of heavy oils, allowing you to achieve the deliciously crunchy textures we all love in a much healthier way. It’s a game-changer for dishes like cannoli, where a perfectly crisp shell is paramount.

Can Cannoli Be Frozen for Later Enjoyment?

Freezing fully assembled cannoli is generally not recommended because the filling tends to make the pastry soggy during thawing. However, you can absolutely prepare and freeze the components separately! Both the cannoli filling and the unfilled shells can be stored in airtight containers in the freezer for up to three months. When you’re ready to enjoy them, thaw the components overnight in the refrigerator. After thawing, coat the shells with the cinnamon and sugar mixture, then pipe in the fresh ricotta filling, and serve immediately for the best experience.

Key Benefits of Cooking with an Air Fryer

Healthier Eating Habits

It’s widely known that fried foods can be high in fat, with each gram of fat containing 9 calories. Air frying significantly reduces the amount of oil needed to achieve crispy results, thereby drastically cutting down on fat intake and overall calories. This makes your favorite “fried” treats, like these churro cannoli, a much healthier indulgence without sacrificing flavor or texture.

Unmatched Convenience

One of the aspects I love most about cooking with my air fryer is its ability to simplify meal preparation and cleanup. Many air fryer recipes require minimal additional cookware, often just a mixing bowl or two. This drastically cuts down on the pile of dirty pots and pans, making cooking a more enjoyable and less cumbersome experience.

Energy Efficiency

A common question arises: “Why use an air fryer if a conventional oven can do the same job in the same time?” The answer lies in energy efficiency. Air fryers eliminate the need to preheat a large conventional oven, which consumes a considerable amount of energy. Not only does this help keep your kitchen cooler during warmer months, but it also translates into noticeable savings on your energy bill.

Significant Time Savings

Who enjoys waiting 20 minutes for an oven to preheat? I certainly don’t! Most air fryer recipes either require no preheating at all or a very short preheat time of five minutes or less. This feature alone is a huge time-saver, allowing you to get delicious food on the table much faster, a true blessing on busy weeknights or when you crave a quick dessert.

Portability for On-the-Go Cooking

The compact and portable nature of air fryers makes them incredibly versatile. We frequently pack ours when traveling in our RV. Air frying while camping is infinitely easier and safer than attempting to deep-fry foods on a small RV stove or a camp burner, allowing us to enjoy homemade treats even when we’re away from home.

The Mexican-Italian Fusion: Churro Cannoli

A step-by-step on how to make cannoli shells in the air fryer for a perfect churro cannoli.

How to Make Air Fryer Churro Cannoli: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these delightful churro cannoli is a fun and rewarding process. Follow these detailed steps to achieve perfect, crispy shells and a luscious, spiced filling.

Cannoli Dough Preparation

  1. In a food processor, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and softened butter. Pulse the mixture until it resembles small, pea-sized crumbs. This ensures the butter is evenly distributed for a tender crust.
  2. Add the egg yolk and Marsala wine to the food processor. Continue to pulse until the dough comes together and forms a cohesive ball. The dough should be smooth and slightly elastic.
  3. Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for a minimum of 10 minutes, or up to 4 hours. This chilling period is crucial as it allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll and preventing shrinkage during cooking.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to an approximate thickness of ⅛ inch. Use a 3-inch round cookie cutter to cut out uniform circles. Gather any leftover dough, re-roll it, and cut out more circles until all dough is used.
  5. Lightly spray each cannoli tube with a nonstick cooking spray. Loosely wrap a dough circle around each tube, gently pressing the edges together on one side to seal. Ensure the dough is not wrapped too tightly, as it needs space to expand slightly.
  6. Place the prepared cannoli shells in your air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd. Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until the shells are firm, golden, and wonderfully crisp.
  7. Carefully remove the cannoli from their molds immediately after cooking, using tongs if they are hot. Place them on a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling on a rack ensures air circulation, preventing condensation and maintaining crispness.

Crafting the Cinnamon Ricotta Filling

  1. Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whip the heavy whipping cream on high speed until stiff peaks form. This usually takes 2-3 minutes. The whipped cream adds a light and airy texture to the filling.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, pure vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and mini chocolate chips. Gently fold these ingredients together until they are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  3. Transfer the creamy filling mixture into a piping bag. If you’re not using it immediately, store the piping bag in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the cannoli.

Coating and Assembling Your Churro Cannoli

  1. Just before serving, melt the butter in a large, shallow bowl. In another large bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the churro coating.
  2. Take each cooled cannoli shell and brush its entire outer surface with the melted butter. This butter layer helps the cinnamon-sugar adhere beautifully and adds richness.
  3. Immediately after buttering, dip or roll the cannoli shell in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, ensuring it’s thoroughly coated on all sides.
  4. Using the piping bag, generously fill each cannoli shell with the prepared ricotta mixture from both ends until it’s plump and visually appealing.
  5. Serve your homemade Air Fryer Churro Cannoli immediately to enjoy them at their absolute best—crisp shells, sweet coating, and creamy filling all in perfect harmony.

Air Fryer Settings: “Bake” vs. “Air Fry”

Many modern air fryers come equipped with various special features, including a “bake” option. However, all of my recipes, including this churro cannoli recipe, are developed using air fryers that primarily offer only temperature and timer settings. This ensures the recipes are accessible to everyone, regardless of their air fryer’s specific functionalities.

While you can certainly use the “bake” setting for recipes traditionally baked, for this particular recipe, if your air fryer has a dedicated “air fry” mode or allows for manual temperature and time adjustments, please use those. Simply setting the temperature and time as instructed will yield the best, crispiest results for your cannoli shells.

Air Frying Doneness Tip for Perfection

It’s important to remember that every air fryer is unique, and cooking times can vary slightly depending on the brand, model, and even the size of your basket. Therefore, all cooking times provided in this recipe are approximate. Always use them as a guideline, and adjust as needed.

If you find that your cannoli shells need a bit more time to reach that perfect crispness, simply extend the cooking time in small increments. If they are browning too quickly, you can slightly reduce the temperature or gently tent them with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Trust your senses – look for that beautiful golden color and firm, crispy texture.

Choosing Your Ideal Air Fryer

Over the years, our kitchen has hosted several air fryers, each with its unique advantages. We initially started with a smaller Phillips model, which proved excellent for single servings and smaller households. I’ve since passed it on to my son, who finds it perfect for cooking for one.

As my air frying adventures grew, I realized the immense benefit of a digital screen for precise temperature control and easier programming. To my pleasant surprise, our XL air fryer from GoWISE was not only more affordable than the Phillips but also offered intuitive controls and additional functions that I absolutely love. It also came with many useful accessories that enhance the cooking experience.

More recently, while working on my second air fryer cookbook, I upgraded to a LARGE air fryer that has been an absolute joy to use. Its touch screen presets and extra-large family size capacity make it ideal for preparing larger batches, perfect for entertaining or bigger families.
