Frequently Asked Questions About Air Frying
How Does Air Frying Work?
While air fryers have gained immense popularity recently, the underlying technology isn’t entirely new. These countertop appliances essentially function as miniature convection ovens. They work by circulating superheated air around your food at high speed using a powerful fan. This intense circulation ensures that heat is distributed evenly across all surfaces of the food, leading to perfectly cooked results and significantly reduced cooking times compared to traditional methods.
The circulating hot air, often carrying fine oil droplets from a light mist applied before cooking, effectively mimics the crisping effect of deep-frying without the need for submerging foods in excessive amounts of oil. This revolutionary cooking method allows you to achieve that coveted crispy texture we all love, but with considerably less fat and fewer calories.
What Are the Benefits of Air Frying?
The advantages of incorporating an air fryer into your cooking routine are numerous:
Healthier Cooking
It’s widely known that traditional fried foods can be high in fat and calories. With air frying, you drastically reduce the amount of oil needed to achieve a satisfying crunch. Since every gram of fat contains 9 calories, cutting down on oil intake directly translates to a significant reduction in overall fat and calorie consumption, making your favorite “fried” dishes much healthier.
Unmatched Convenience
One of the aspects I love most about cooking with an air fryer is how it simplifies meal preparation and cleanup. Many air fryer recipes, including this creamy garlic chicken, require minimal additional equipment – often just a mixing bowl or a small saucepan. This eliminates the hassle of using multiple large baking sheets, pots, and pans, making post-dinner cleanup a breeze.
Energy Efficiency
Some might ask why use an air fryer when a conventional oven can cook similar dishes. The truth is, air fryers are remarkably more energy-efficient. They heat up much faster and cook food quicker than large ovens, using less electricity in the process. This means lower energy bills for you, and during warmer months, it helps keep your kitchen cooler by avoiding the heat generated by a full-sized oven.
Significant Time Savings
If you’re like me, waiting 20 minutes for an oven to preheat can feel like an eternity. Most air fryer recipes either don’t require preheating or involve a preheat time of 5 minutes or less. This substantial time saving, combined with faster cooking, means you can get dinner on the table much quicker, freeing up valuable moments in your busy day.
Portability and Versatility
The compact size of air fryers makes them incredibly easy to transport, expanding your cooking options beyond the kitchen. We often bring ours along in our RV, finding that air frying while camping is far more practical and safer than attempting to deep-fry foods on a small RV stove or an outdoor burner. It’s perfect for potlucks, vacations, or even just setting up an extra cooking station.
Crafting the Perfect Creamy Garlic Chicken Recipe

How to Store Leftover Creamy Garlic Chicken
Proper storage ensures your delicious creamy garlic chicken remains fresh and enjoyable for longer. You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For longer preservation, it can be frozen for approximately 3 months. When reheating from frozen, it’s best to thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before gently warming it on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Air Frying Doneness Tips for Optimal Results
It’s important to remember that every air fryer model is unique and can cook at slightly different rates. Therefore, all cooking times provided in recipes are approximate and can vary based on your specific appliance and the food’s initial temperature. Always consider these times as a guide.
Should your chicken require more cooking time, simply extend the duration as needed. If you notice the exterior browning too quickly, you can gently reduce the heat or tent the chicken with a small piece of foil to prevent over-browning while the inside finishes cooking. For best results, always ensure chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
The Secret to an Amazing Creamy Garlic Sauce for Chicken

For the Creamy Garlic Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion – finely chopped

Essential Tips to Prevent Sticking in Your Air Fryer
Preventing food from sticking to your air fryer basket is crucial for both cooking success and easy cleanup. While it might seem intuitive to use non-stick cooking spray, I strongly advise against it. These sprays often contain propellants and additives that can leave a sticky residue on the air fryer basket over time. This buildup is difficult to remove, even with thorough washing, and can eventually lead to smoking when your air fryer is in use.
Similarly, I don’t recommend lining the air fryer basket with aluminum foil. The fundamental principle of air frying relies on the consistent circulation of hot air around the food. The perforations in the basket or tray are designed to facilitate this airflow. Placing foil down obstructs this crucial air circulation, preventing your food from cooking evenly and achieving that desired crispiness.
Instead, I suggest using an olive oil spray, preferably from a dedicated spray bottle, to lightly coat the air fryer basket. This creates a non-stick surface without the harmful residue. Alternatively, you can line your air fryer with perforated parchment paper, which allows air to flow through while keeping food from sticking. Another excellent option is to invest in reusable silicone liners designed for air fryers; these also promote airflow and are wonderfully easy to clean.
Perfectly Air-Fried Chicken Breast: A Visual Guide

How to Make Creamy Garlic Chicken in the Air Fryer: Step-by-Step
- Preheat your air fryer to 180°C / 350°F for 5 minutes.
- Prepare the chicken breasts by butterflying each one horizontally, creating two thinner slices from each original breast. This ensures even cooking.
- Season both sides of the butterflied chicken slices generously with granulated garlic, salt, and black pepper.
- In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and grated Parmesan cheese, mixing well.
- Dredge each seasoned chicken piece in the flour and Parmesan mixture, ensuring an even coating. Shake off any excess.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil. Place 2 chicken pieces in the basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded to allow for optimal air circulation. (If you have a larger air fryer, you may be able to cook all pieces at once.)
- Lightly spray the top of the chicken with a little more oil. Cook for 6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F/74°C). Repeat with any remaining chicken.
For the Creamy Garlic Sauce:
- In a large skillet with tall sides (it needs to be spacious enough to accommodate the chicken breasts later), melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they become soft and translucent, typically 3-5 minutes.
- Next, add the peeled whole garlic cloves to the skillet and cook for a few seconds until they are lightly browned and fragrant on the outside.
- Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Let it cook for approximately 5 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce by half and concentrate the flavors.
- Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the heavy cream and let the sauce gently simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, giving all the flavors time to meld together into a rich gravy.
- Mix in the grated Parmesan cheese and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cheese has fully melted and the sauce is wonderfully creamy and bubbly.
- Season the sauce with black pepper to taste.
- Carefully add the air-fried chicken breasts into the creamy garlic sauce. Cook for a couple of minutes, turning the chicken to ensure it’s thoroughly coated and soaks up all the delicious flavors.
- Garnish generously with fresh chopped parsley and serve hot. This dish is particularly delightful when served with pasta, rice, or your favorite side.
Can You Air Fry Frozen Chicken?
When it comes to air frying, it’s generally best practice to avoid cooking frozen or frosty food directly. Attempting to air fry food from a frozen state can lead to undesirable results, such as the food drying out or cooking unevenly – with some parts becoming overcooked while others remain undercooked. Unlike a pressure cooker, which can handle frozen ingredients effectively, an air fryer works best with thawed food.
For optimal results and safety, always allow your chicken (or any other food) to thaw completely before placing it in the air fryer. This ensures even cooking, a perfect texture, and consistent flavor throughout your dish.

Choosing the Right Oil Sprayer for Your Air Fryer
To ensure your air fryer performs at its best and to protect its non-stick coating, it’s vital to use the correct type of oil application. I strongly advise against using aerosol cooking sprays. These sprays can leave a gummy residue on your air fryer basket that is incredibly difficult to remove and can cause your appliance to smoke during operation.
Instead, I highly recommend using a reusable spray bottle that you can fill with your preferred cooking oil, such as olive oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil. This particular spray bottle is excellent because it delivers a consistent, fine mist every time, making it indispensable for achieving perfectly crispy air-fried results without any sticky problems.
Chef’s Note: For an even more intense garlicky flavor in your sauce, consider mincing the garlic cloves before adding them to the gravy. Using whole cloves will result in a much milder garlic taste.
Selecting the Best Air Fryer for Your Kitchen
Over the years, our kitchen has hosted several air fryers, each offering unique advantages. We initially started with a smaller Phillips model, which was perfect for getting acquainted with air frying. I’ve since passed it on to my son, who cooks for one.
As my air frying journey progressed, I realized I preferred the convenience of a digital screen. Surprisingly, my XL air fryer from GoWISE proved to be less expensive than the Phillips model and offered enhanced ease of use with extra functions. It also came with several useful accessories that I frequently use.
More recently, while working on my second air fryer cookbook, I decided to upgrade to a larger model to handle bigger batches. I chose this spacious air fryer, which has been truly wonderful. It features intuitive touch screen presets and an XL family size capacity, making it perfect for cooking for a crowd or preparing larger meals.
