Strawberry Napoleons: A Taste of Summer Bliss

There’s something truly magical about pastries that has always captivated me. Perhaps it’s their intricate beauty, the delicate textures, or simply the promise of a sweet indulgence. Sitting down to a dessert that is not only visually stunning but also incredibly delicious feels like a small celebration. This deep appreciation for pastries began many years ago, and it’s a passion that continues to inspire my baking adventures, leading me to create irresistible treats like these easy Strawberry Napoleons.

I fondly recall a special girls’ weekend after high school graduation with my mom, grandmother, and aunt. We journeyed to Solvang, a charming Danish-inspired town near the California coast that held a special place in my mom’s heart and mine. The streets of Solvang were dotted with quaint shops and, most notably, an abundance of bakeries. That weekend, we indulged in every pastry imaginable, savoring each flaky, buttery bite. Being young and full of boundless energy, I barely tipped 100 pounds, so those delightful calories were quickly forgotten, replaced by cherished memories and a profound love for layered, cream-filled pastries. It was there, amidst the delightful aromas of freshly baked goods, that my affection for elegant desserts like Napoleons truly blossomed.

Given this lifelong affection, when the opportunity arose to join my friends for our inaugural “Feast & Devour” challenge, and the theme was announced as “strawberries,” there was no question what I would make. Strawberry Napoleons immediately sprang to mind. They perfectly encapsulate everything I adore about pastries: their stunning appearance, the delightful interplay of textures, and the vibrant freshness of strawberries. This recipe, born from cherished memories and a passion for sweet treats, is incredibly satisfying to create and even more so to share.

Strawberry Napoleons are an easy dessert recipe made with puff pastry, pudding, strawberries & dusted with confectioners sugar. The perfect summer dessert for any occasion, featuring layers of golden puff pastry and fresh fruit.

The beauty of these Strawberry Napoleons lies in their sophisticated presentation combined with remarkable ease of preparation. Starting with readily available ingredients like store-bought puff pastry, instant pudding mix, and fresh strawberries, this dessert comes together with minimal fuss. I simply laid out the thawed puff pastry on my favorite baking sheet and baked it according to package directions until golden and puffed. While the pastry cooled, I whisked together the creamy vanilla pudding, then gently folded in whipped topping to create a light and airy filling. The layers are then assembled with precision: flaky pastry, rich cream, and vibrant sliced strawberries, culminating in a beautiful dessert that looks like it took hours but is surprisingly quick to prepare.

Honestly, these Strawberry Napoleons genuinely made me swoon! Each bite was a delightful symphony of textures and flavors. The crispness of the puff pastry, the smooth, cool pudding filling, and the burst of fresh strawberries create a harmonious experience. A delicate dusting of confectioners’ sugar adds the perfect finishing touch, enhancing both the appearance and the sweetness. They are, without a doubt, the perfect summer dessert, ideal for garden parties, family gatherings, or simply treating yourself to something truly special. Ingredients

  • 2 sheets Puff Pastry, thawed
  • 2 pkgs. (about 3 ounces each) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 cups thawed frozen whipped topping
  • 2-1/2 cups sliced strawberries
  • 6 tbsp. confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). This ensures your puff pastry bakes quickly and evenly, achieving that desirable golden crispness.
  2. Unfold the thawed pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Handling it gently will prevent tearing and help maintain its flaky layers.
  3. Carefully cut each pastry sheet into 3 strips along the fold marks. These strips will form the foundation of your Napoleon layers.
  4. Cut each strip into 4 equal rectangles. You should now have 12 rectangles per pastry sheet, totaling 24 pieces for two sheets.
  5. Place the pastry rectangles on your baking sheet, ensuring they are not overcrowded to allow for proper expansion and browning.
  6. Bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and delightfully crisp. Keep a close eye on them as ovens can vary.
  7. Transfer the baked pastry pieces to a cooling rack and let them cool for at least 10 minutes. They need to be completely cool before assembly to prevent the filling from melting.
  8. Once cooled, carefully split each pastry rectangle into 2 layers horizontally, creating 48 thin pastry layers in total. This delicate step is key to building those classic Napoleon layers.
  9. Prepare the instant vanilla pudding mix according to package directions, but use only 1 cup of milk. This will result in a thicker, more stable pudding perfect for layering.
  10. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping into the prepared pudding mixture. Be careful not to overmix, as you want to maintain the light and airy texture of the whipped cream.
  11. Select 16 of the top pastry layers and set them aside. These will be the very last layer of your assembled Napoleons, providing a crisp finish.
  12. Spread about 2 tablespoons of the pudding mixture evenly onto each of 16 bottom pastry layers. Ensure you get good coverage without overfilling.
  13. Top each with approximately 1 tablespoon of sliced strawberries, then carefully place another pastry layer on top of the strawberries.
  14. Continue layering with the remaining pudding mixture and strawberries. Finally, cap each Napoleon with one of the reserved top pastry layers.
  15. Before serving, sprinkle generously with confectioners’ sugar for a beautiful presentation and an extra touch of sweetness. Chill for a short while if desired to allow flavors to meld, but serve relatively fresh for optimal pastry crispness.
