Common Questions About Garlic Parmesan Chicken

Can I Use Chicken Breasts Instead of Thighs?

Absolutely! Boneless, skinless chicken breasts can be used in place of thighs. However, keep in mind that chicken breasts are leaner and can dry out more quickly. To ensure juicy results, you may want to slightly reduce the cooking time and always use a meat thermometer to check for an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). If you opt for breasts, aim for cuts of similar thickness to ensure even cooking.

What’s the Best Way to Get a Crispy Skin?

For that coveted crispy chicken skin, a few key steps are essential. First, always pat your chicken thighs thoroughly dry with paper towels before seasoning. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness! When sautéing, start with the skin side down in hot olive oil and butter over medium-high heat. Allow it to cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, or until deeply golden brown and crispy. This initial sear in the Instant Pot creates a fantastic texture that’s often lost in pressure cooking alone. The pressure cooking step will tenderize the chicken, but the initial sear is crucial for that delicious crispy layer.

Is Garlic Powder a Good Substitute for Fresh Garlic?

While fresh garlic always delivers the most vibrant and pungent flavor, garlic powder can certainly be used as a substitute if fresh cloves aren’t available. As a general rule, 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder is equivalent to one clove of fresh garlic. However, be aware that the flavor profile will be slightly different – garlic powder offers a more mellow, less sharp garlic taste. For the best results in this creamy sauce, fresh minced garlic is highly recommended to achieve that robust, aromatic depth.

Storage and Meal Prep Tips

It’s a rare occasion to have leftovers of this incredibly flavorful dish, as it tends to disappear quickly! However, for those moments when you do, or if you’re planning for meal prep, here are the best ways to store your Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken:

Refrigerator:

To maintain freshness and flavor, store any leftover chicken and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. When reheating, gently warm on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave until heated through, adding a splash of chicken broth or water if the sauce appears too thick.

Freezer:

While this dish is best enjoyed fresh for optimal texture, especially for the chicken skin, you can freeze it. Place cooled chicken and sauce in a freezer-safe, airtight container for up to 1-2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating. Be mindful that the sauce’s creamy texture might change slightly after freezing and thawing, potentially becoming a bit grainier. To counteract this, a quick whisk on the stovetop with a little extra butter or cream can help restore its smoothness.

Expert Tips for Perfect Garlic Parmesan Chicken

Achieving that perfect golden-brown, crispy exterior and incredibly tender interior is key to this dish’s appeal. Here are some pro tips to ensure your Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken is nothing short of amazing:

  • Pat Chicken Dry: This cannot be stressed enough! Excess moisture prevents browning and crisping. Always pat chicken thighs thoroughly dry with paper towels before seasoning and searing.
  • Quality Parmesan Matters: For the most authentic and savory flavor, use freshly grated Parmesan cheese from a block rather than pre-shredded varieties. The flavor difference is truly noticeable.
  • Don’t Skimp on Butter: Butter is crucial for developing a rich, golden crust during the sear and contributes significantly to the luxurious texture and flavor of the garlic Parmesan sauce.
  • Medium Heat Sauté: When searing, use medium-high heat. Too low, and the chicken won’t brown; too high, and it will burn before crisping. Watch carefully to achieve that beautiful golden hue.
  • Fresh Garlic is Best: While powder is an option, fresh minced garlic provides a much more robust and aromatic foundation for the sauce. Don’t be shy with it!
  • Fresh Herbs for Finish: A sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley at the end not only adds a vibrant pop of color but also a fresh, herbaceous note that brightens the entire dish.
  • Mind the Cook Time: Overcooked chicken is dry chicken. For bone-in, skin-on thighs, 10 minutes at high pressure followed by a manual release is usually perfect, but always confirm doneness with a meat thermometer (165°F or 74°C internal temperature).
  • Sautéing Garlic: When making the sauce, sauté the garlic only until fragrant and just starting to turn golden. Overcooking garlic can make it bitter.
  • Deglaze the Pot: After searing the chicken, if there are browned bits (fond) stuck to the bottom of the Instant Pot, deglaze with a splash of water or chicken stock before pressure cooking. This not only adds flavor to your sauce but also prevents a “Burn” error.

Simple Ingredients for Incredible Flavor

This easy Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken recipe relies on a handful of straightforward ingredients that, when combined, create an explosion of buttery, garlicky goodness. Each component plays a vital role in building the dish’s irresistible profile:

  • Olive Oil: Essential for searing the chicken and helping to achieve that beautiful golden crust. It also forms the base for our flavorful sauce.
  • Butter: Adds incredible richness and aids in browning the chicken. It’s a key player in the creamy, decadent garlic Parmesan sauce.
  • Chicken Thighs (bone-in, skin-on): The star of the show. Bone-in, skin-on thighs offer the most flavor and stay incredibly juicy under pressure, yielding tender results every time.
  • Water or Chicken Stock: Provides the necessary liquid for the Instant Pot to come to pressure. Chicken stock will infuse more depth of flavor into the chicken.
  • Garlic Cloves: The heart of the “garlic Parmesan” flavor. Freshly minced garlic delivers a pungent, aromatic punch that cannot be replicated.
  • Red Pepper Flakes (optional): A fantastic addition for those who enjoy a subtle kick of heat, balancing the richness of the sauce.
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese: Provides the signature salty, nutty, and tangy flavor that makes this sauce so addictive. Freshly grated is always best.
  • Fresh Chopped Parsley: Used as a vibrant garnish, it adds a touch of fresh, herbaceous brightness and a pop of color to the finished dish.

How to Make Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken

This recipe is incredibly straightforward, promising a five-star dining experience for anyone you serve it to. Follow these simple steps for perfectly cooked, flavor-packed chicken!

Preparing the Chicken in the Instant Pot

  1. Begin by activating the “Saute-Normal” function on your Instant Pot. Once it indicates it’s hot (usually after a few minutes), add the olive oil and butter to the pot. Allow the butter to melt and shimmer.
  2. While the pot is heating, thoroughly pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels. This crucial step helps achieve a crispy skin. Season both sides lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  3. Once the butter is melted, carefully place the seasoned chicken thighs into the Instant Pot, skin-side down. Let them sear for 2-3 minutes, or until the skin turns a beautiful golden brown and becomes slightly crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pot; cook in batches if necessary.
  4. Flip the chicken thighs and cook for an additional 2 minutes on the other side to develop some color. Remove the browned chicken from the Instant Pot and set aside.
  5. Turn off the Instant Pot’s “Saute” function. This ensures the pot cools down slightly before pressure cooking.
  6. Insert the trivet (the metal rack that usually comes with your Instant Pot) into the bottom of the pot. Carefully place the seared chicken thighs on the trivet, skin-side up. Try to arrange them in a single layer without too much overlap to ensure even cooking.
  7. Pour 1 cup of water or chicken stock into the Instant Pot, ensuring it goes around the chicken and trivet, not directly over the chicken skin (to preserve some crispness).
  8. Secure the Instant Pot lid, making sure the sealing ring is properly in place. Rotate the valve to the “sealing” position. Select the “Manual Pressure Cook-Normal-High Pressure” setting and set the cooking time for 10 minutes.
  9. The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to build pressure before the 10-minute cooking cycle begins. Once cooking is complete, perform a manual (quick) pressure release by carefully switching the valve to the “venting” position. Be extremely cautious as hot steam will rapidly release, and it may splatter.
  10. Once all the steam has been released and the float valve drops, carefully remove the lid. Transfer the cooked chicken thighs to a plate and set them aside. Remove the trivet and carefully discard the cooking liquid (water/stock) from the pot.

Crafting the Rich Garlic Parmesan Sauce

  1. With the pot now empty of liquid, reactivate the “Saute-Normal” function on your Instant Pot.
  2. Add the remaining butter, olive oil, minced garlic cloves, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the pot. Stir continuously.
  3. Allow the butter to melt and the garlic to cook until it becomes wonderfully fragrant and just starts to turn golden, typically about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can become bitter.
  4. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and fresh chopped parsley. Continue stirring until the cheese melts slightly and combines with the butter and garlic to form a luscious, aromatic sauce.
  5. Return the cooked chicken thighs to the Instant Pot. Gently toss them in the garlic Parmesan sauce, ensuring each piece is thoroughly coated.
  6. Serve your Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken immediately, ensuring every serving gets a generous spooning of that glorious sauce.
  7. If by some miracle you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, reheating gently when ready to enjoy again.

Essential Kitchen Supplies for This Recipe

The Instant Pot has truly revolutionized weeknight cooking, becoming an indispensable tool in my kitchen for its versatility and efficiency. For this Garlic Parmesan Chicken recipe, you’ll need a few key items:

  • Instant Pot: The star appliance that makes this recipe so quick and easy. Any electric pressure cooker will work.
  • Sauté Pan (optional): While the Instant Pot handles sautéing, a separate sauté pan can be used if you prefer to sear more chicken at once or if your Instant Pot’s sauté function isn’t as robust.
  • Trivet (for Instant Pot): This metal rack is essential for keeping the chicken out of the cooking liquid during pressure cooking, ensuring even results.
  • Measuring Spoons and Cups: For accurate ingredient proportions.
  • Paper Towels: Crucial for patting the chicken dry to achieve crispy skin.
  • Meat Thermometer: For ensuring the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) without overcooking.

What to Serve With Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken

The rich and creamy garlic Parmesan sauce perfectly complements a variety of side dishes, making it easy to create a complete and satisfying meal. Personally, I find that pasta is the ideal companion, allowing the delicious sauce to coat every strand. However, don’t hesitate to explore other fantastic options:

  • Creamy Pasta Dishes: Serve this chicken over a bed of al dente penne, spaghetti, or fettuccine, with extra sauce spooned generously over top. A creamy pasta creates a truly indulgent meal.
  • Roasted Green Beans: For a fresh and crisp contrast, a side of roasted green beans with a hint of garlic and olive oil works beautifully.
  • Garlic Bread or Crusty Baguette: These are perfect for soaking up every last drop of the delectable garlic Parmesan sauce.
  • Light Salad: A simple, refreshing green salad with a vinaigrette dressing offers a lovely counterpoint to the richness of the chicken and sauce.
  • Spaghetti Squash: A delicious and lighter alternative to traditional pasta, offering a similar texture with fewer carbohydrates.
  • Mashed Potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes provide another excellent canvas for the savory sauce.
  • Steamed Rice: A neutral base that absorbs the sauce wonderfully.

Variations and Creative Add-Ins for Your Dish

This Instant Pot Garlic Parmesan Chicken recipe is wonderfully adaptable, allowing you to experiment with flavors and textures to suit your preferences. Feel free to get creative and make it your own! Here are some exciting variations and add-ins to try:

  • Spicy Kick: For those who love heat, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or add a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the garlic Parmesan sauce. A drizzle of sriracha ranch dipping sauce on the side can also add a fantastic spicy element.
  • Extra Creaminess: Stir in a tablespoon or two of cream cheese or a splash of heavy cream at the end when adding the Parmesan for an even richer, more decadent sauce texture.
  • Herbaceous Twist: Beyond parsley, consider adding other fresh herbs like fresh thyme, rosemary, or oregano to the sauce for a different aromatic profile.
  • Italian Flair: A teaspoon of Italian seasoning mixed in with the chicken seasoning or the sauce can deepen the savory, herbaceous notes.
  • Umami Boost: A pinch of onion powder or garlic powder (in addition to fresh garlic) can add another layer of savory depth to the sauce.
  • White Wine Deglaze: For a more sophisticated flavor, deglaze the pot after searing the chicken with a splash of dry white wine before adding the water or stock for pressure cooking. This adds complexity and brightness.
  • Vegetable Boost: Sauté some sliced mushrooms or spinach with the garlic before adding the Parmesan for added nutrients and flavor.
  • Lemon Brightness: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the very end can cut through the richness of the sauce and add a refreshing zing.

  • 4 chicken thighs (bone-in, skin-on)
  • 1 cup water or chicken stock

Garlic Parmesan Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves minced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoons parsley fresh chopped

Instructions

Chicken

  1. Heat the Instant Pot using the Saute-Normal function. Add the olive oil and butter.
  2. Pat the chicken thighs dry with a paper towel and season them lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. When the butter has melted, add the chicken thighs, skin side down, and let them cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the chicken has started to turn golden brown.
  4. Flip the chicken and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the chicken.
  5. Turn the Instant Pot off.
  6. Add the trivet to the bottom and place the chicken thighs, skin side up, on the trivet. Try not to overlap them too much.
  7. Pour in the water or chicken stock.
  8. Set the Instant Pot to the Manual Pressure Cook-Normal-High Pressure for 10 minutes. Make sure the pressure valve is in the “sealing” position.
  9. The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure and will then begin counting down from 10.
  10. When the Instant Pot has finished cooking, manually release the pressure by switching the valve to the “venting” position. Be careful—the vent will steam and may splatter!
  11. Remove the chicken thighs and set them aside. Remove the trivet and discard the water/stock.

Garlic Parmesan Sauce

  1. Heat the Instant Pot using the Saute-Normal function.
  2. Add the butter, olive oil, garlic cloves, and red pepper flakes, if using.
  3. When the butter has melted and the garlic has started to turn golden, add the parmesan and fresh chopped parsley and stir to combine.
  4. Return the chicken thighs to the Instant Pot and toss to combine– make sure the chicken thighs get coated on all sides with the garlic parmesan sauce.
  5. Serve immediately.
  6. Store any leftover chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Notes

I love to serve this dish with pasta— with extra sauce spooned over top. But it is also delicious with rice, potatoes, or a side salad.
If you don’t have the trivet insert for your Instant Pot, these chicken thighs can be made without it.
