The Magic of Grinch Donuts: Simple Steps for Festive Fun
If you’ve never experienced the joy of making donuts using refrigerated biscuit dough, prepare to be amazed! This method is not only incredibly fast but also yields wonderfully delicious results. It takes the intimidation out of donut making, making it accessible even for novice bakers. The simplicity of using pre-made biscuit dough means you can focus on the fun part: decorating!
While you can certainly glaze these donuts in any way you fancy, the Grinch theme truly brings them to life. We adorn these delightful rings of dough with a vibrant green frosting, capturing the Grinch’s iconic hue, and then crown each one with a single red heart sprinkle, symbolizing his growth and the spirit of Christmas. This particular decoration makes for an extra special and super fun breakfast that the little ones (and the young at heart) will absolutely love!

Commonly Asked Questions About Making Grinch Donuts
What is the best way to store leftover Grinch donuts?
Proper storage is crucial to keeping your Grinch Donuts fresh and delicious. The trick is to strike a balance between allowing just enough airflow to prevent sogginess and keeping enough air out to prevent them from going stale. I’ve found that placing them in a paper sack and simply folding over the top works wonders. This method allows for slight air circulation while protecting them. Stored this way, they will maintain their freshness and texture well at room temperature for up to 2 days. I do not recommend refrigeration, as the moist air in a refrigerator tends to cause the glaze to melt and become sticky, making the donuts soggy and less appealing.
Can these Grinch Donuts be made in an air fryer?
Absolutely! The air fryer is a fantastic alternative for making these donuts, offering a less messy cooking experience than deep frying. To prepare them in the air fryer, follow the same initial steps for the dough, cutting out the donut shapes and holes. Then, lightly spritz them with cooking oil before placing them in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C) for approximately 4-5 minutes, flipping them halfway through to ensure even cooking and golden-brown perfection. Once cooked, proceed with the glazing and decorating instructions as outlined in the recipe.
More Christmas Breakfast Ideas for a Merry Morning
While Grinch Donuts are undeniably a festive favorite, Christmas morning offers an opportunity to explore a variety of breakfast delights. Consider options like fluffy gingerbread pancakes, a savory breakfast casserole that can be prepared overnight, or even a build-your-own waffle bar with holiday toppings. The key is to find recipes that bring joy without adding stress to an already busy day, allowing you to focus on family and celebration.

Can these Grinch Donuts be made with homemade dough?
You certainly can! If you prefer the satisfaction of making your donuts entirely from scratch, using homemade dough is a wonderful option. I have excellent recipes for both yeast-based dough, which yields a classic, airy donut texture, and a simple 2-ingredient dough that is surprisingly versatile and works beautifully for this recipe. You can find all the detailed instructions for preparing both types of homemade dough in my comprehensive Air Fryer Donut Hole Recipe. Using homemade dough will require a bit more time but offers an extra layer of personal touch to your festive Grinch Donuts.
Can these canned biscuit donuts be baked instead of fried?
When using canned biscuit dough, frying (either in oil or an air fryer) is essential to achieve that characteristic donut texture – crispy on the outside and wonderfully fluffy on the inside. If you choose to bake them, while still edible, they will essentially turn into glazed biscuits, not donuts. The texture will be denser and more bread-like, lacking the light, airy quality that makes a donut so delightful. So, while you *can* bake them, they won’t quite be the donut experience you might be hoping for. For the authentic Grinch Donut taste and texture, stick to frying methods.
Crafting the Perfect Green Donut Recipe for Christmas
The visual appeal of these Grinch Donuts is just as important as their delicious taste. The vibrant green color, reminiscent of the Grinch himself, is achieved through careful coloring of the frosting. This section focuses on the key components for both making the donuts and bringing their iconic Grinchy look to life. It’s a simple process, but paying attention to the details ensures a spectacular and memorable holiday treat.

Ingredients for Your Grinch Donuts
- Refrigerated canned biscuits (standard size)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Vanilla-flavored frosting (pre-made cans for convenience)
- Green gel food coloring
- Red heart sprinkles
- White sprinkles
Where can I find the ingredients for these Grinch Donuts?
Most of these ingredients are readily available at your local grocery store. For the best results in achieving that vivid Grinch green without thinning your frosting, I highly recommend using gel food coloring. Unlike liquid food coloring, gel coloring is highly concentrated and won’t add excess moisture to your icing, ensuring a smooth, rich color. The adorable candy hearts, essential for the Grinch’s transformation, are often found in the baking aisle or seasonal sections of larger supermarkets. You can also easily find both gel food coloring and various sprinkle assortments at most online retailers and big-box stores like Walmart and Target. Don’t forget to check specialty baking supply stores for unique sprinkle options if you want to get extra creative!

How to Make Grinch Donuts: Step-by-Step Guide
- First, carefully remove the refrigerated biscuit dough from their cans and place them on a clean surface. Set them aside while you prepare your frying station.
- Next, pour the vegetable oil into a large, shallow pot or deep skillet, ensuring the oil is at least 2-3 inches deep. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches approximately 350-375 degrees Fahrenheit (175-190°C). A kitchen thermometer is useful here for accuracy.
- While the oil is heating, use a small cookie cutter (or a clean, empty soda bottle cap) to cut a hole in the center of each biscuit. This will give you a classic donut shape and, as a bonus, a batch of adorable donut holes! Continue this process for all 10 biscuits, yielding 10 donuts and 10 donut holes.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add the biscuit donuts and donut holes to the oil, working in small batches of 3-4 at a time. Do not overcrowd the pot, as this will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy donuts. These donuts cook very quickly, so be sure to turn them every 30-45 seconds to ensure even cooking and a beautiful golden-brown color on all sides.
- Finally, using a slotted spoon or spider, remove the cooked biscuit donuts and donut holes from the hot oil and place them on a wire cooling rack set over a baking sheet. This allows excess oil to drain off and helps them cool evenly.
Decorating Your Festive Grinch Donuts
- First, while the donuts are cooling, prepare your frosting. Place the containers of vanilla-flavored icing (with lids and foil seals removed) into the microwave and heat for about 45 seconds. This will make the frosting soft and easy to dip.
- Second, stir in the green gel food coloring until you achieve your desired Grinch-green shade. Start with a small amount and add more gradually for a deeper color.
- Third, pour the softened green frosting into a large, shallow bowl. If using any plain white frosting for contrast or different effects, have that ready in a separate small bowl. Stir to combine the green color thoroughly. This bowl will be used for dipping the donuts.
- Next, one by one, dip each cooled biscuit donut and donut hole into the colored vanilla frosting, ensuring it’s fully coated. Lift them out, allowing any excess frosting to drip back into the bowl, then place them back onto the wire cooling rack. If a thicker coat of frosting is desired, allow the first coat to set slightly before applying a second.
- Now, to help the frosting set quickly, place the frosted biscuits into the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. This chilling time will allow the frosting to cool and harden, preventing smudges and preparing them for the final decorative touches.
- Finally, once the frosting is set, it’s time for the signature Grinchy decorations! Decorate the donuts with white sprinkles to mimic snow or a festive sparkle, and most importantly, place a single red candy heart sprinkle on each donut to represent the Grinch’s growing heart.
- Serve immediately and watch the smiles appear!
How do you make homemade donut glaze?
If you prefer to make your own glaze from scratch, it’s incredibly simple! For a standard donut glaze, whisk together ½ cup of confectioners’ sugar with 1 tablespoon of milk (or water for a thinner glaze) and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth. You can then add your green gel food coloring to this homemade glaze. Adjust milk consistency as needed to reach your desired dipping texture.

Can this Grinch Donut recipe be doubled?
Yes, absolutely! You can easily double this recipe to feed a larger crowd or ensure you have plenty of festive treats throughout the holiday weekend. Just be mindful of the extra time it will take for both cooking the donuts in batches and the subsequent decorating process. Ensure your frying pot is large enough to accommodate more oil and that you have ample cooling rack space. Doubling the recipe is a great idea for Christmas parties or large family breakfasts.
Can these Grinch Donuts be frozen?
The answer to freezing Grinch Donuts is a bit nuanced – yes and no. My suggestion is that you can successfully freeze the *cooked* donuts (before frosting them). Once they are cool, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze solid, then transfer them to an airtight freezer bag or container. When you’re ready to serve, reheat the donuts gently (in an oven or air fryer until warmed through), and then prepare and add the frosting fresh. Freezing donuts with the frosting already on can lead to a messy and less appealing texture once thawed, as the glaze may become sticky or break down.
A Festive Grinch Breakfast Spread
Imagine a whole breakfast spread dedicated to the Grinch! These donuts can be the centerpiece, complemented by other green-themed foods or Grinch-inspired items. Think green fruit salads, green smoothies, or even green pancakes to create a truly immersive and fun holiday breakfast experience that will be remembered for years to come. It’s all about creating those joyful Christmas memories.
