Indulge in the magic of Christmas with Santa’s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies, an exceptionally easy-to-make recipe guaranteed to bring smiles to faces young and old. These delectable cookies are the quintessential treat for Christmas Eve, creating cherished memories with every bite!
For as long as I can recall, Christmas Eve has always been a day dedicated to baking an abundance of festive goodies in our home. The tradition started with the sweet notion of leaving out special treats for Santa Claus. While the “Santa thing” has evolved over many years as the kids grew older, the spirit of baking remains vibrantly alive in our household.

Even though our children are now grown and we’ve moved past the whimsical tradition of convincing them about Santa’s midnight visit, the annual ritual of preparing holiday treats is stronger than ever. In fact, we tend to bake far more cookies and sweets than we could ever possibly consume, sharing the joy (and the calories!) with friends and neighbors.
I confess, I often find myself in a delightful dilemma, unable to choose which recipes to make. In my mind, every single favorite treat simply *has* to be made on Christmas Eve – I’m not entirely sure why this strict timeline exists, but it’s a rule I happily abide by!
Typically, I plan for 5-7 different recipes. As the evening progresses and my energy inevitably starts to wane, a few less crucial favorites might get trimmed from the list. However, there is one non-negotiable recipe that we ALWAYS make: the legendary Santa’s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies.
The Ultimate Christmas Chocolate Chip Cookies

I have to admit, my Christmas Eve baking escapades can get a little over the top. I start the day with grand visions, thinking, “These are all my absolute favorites, and we simply *must* make them all!” But among the bustling chaos of flour, sugar, and festive sprinkles, this particular chocolate chip cookie recipe always takes priority.
You see, the magic behind these incredibly soft and chewy cookies lies in a little secret: the dough needs to chill overnight. I understand, I know – for eager bakers, waiting can feel like a total bummer. But trust me, this step is non-negotiable for achieving cookie perfection.
Crafting the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie

Chilling the dough is absolutely essential for these cookies because it helps them maintain their ideal shape during baking. Without proper chilling, the dough tends to spread out too much, resulting in flat, thin cookies that lose all that beautiful volume and chewiness in the center. The cold butter and fats firm up, which means they melt slower in the oven, giving the cookies a chance to set before spreading excessively. This also allows the flavors to meld and deepen, resulting in a richer, more complex taste that truly elevates these from good to outstanding.
Experience the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies This Holiday

So, my favorite strategy is to whip up the cookie dough the night before Christmas Eve. This way, the dough has ample time to chill and develop its full flavor potential. Then, I start my Christmas Eve morning by getting these cookies baked first. It’s a wonderful way to kick off the festivities, filling the house with an irresistible aroma.
Once baked, we have a batch of warm, soft, and chewy cookies ready to snack on while we continue making all the other holiday goodies. It truly sets a festive tone for the entire day.
The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I have to tell you, these babies are so incredibly soft, wonderfully buttery, and perfectly chewy that they are usually gone in a flash! It’s a running joke in our family how quickly they disappear. I’ll admit, there have been a few occasions where we barely had a couple left to leave out for the jolly old guy himself.
Now that the kids are older, it doesn’t quite matter so much if Santa’s plate isn’t overflowing. But back when we were carefully arranging the plate of cookies and milk, I made absolutely sure to set aside Santa’s portion ahead of time. I wouldn’t want us to find ourselves with an empty cookie jar at the end of the night after all our hard work! These cookies truly embody the spirit of sharing and indulgence, making them a holiday staple.

Frequently Asked Questions for Perfect Cookies
Why is Chilling the Cookie Dough So Important?
This step is REALLY important, and here’s why. Chilling the dough firm up the butter, which helps the cookies hold their shape better in the oven, preventing them from spreading too much and becoming thin and crispy. This ensures you get those wonderfully thick, chewy centers we all crave.
Additionally, chilled dough is significantly easier to handle and roll into uniform balls because it’s less sticky. Beyond the structural benefits, chilling also allows the flavors in the dough to meld and deepen over time, resulting in a richer, more complex taste. Please do not skip this crucial step!
What is the Ideal Softness for My Butter?
When we talk about “softened butter,” it’s important to hit the right consistency. It should absolutely not be so soft that it’s greasy or nearly melted, as this will prevent the dough from coming together properly and impact the final texture of your cookies. The butter should still be cool to the touch, almost at room temperature – definitely not hard as a rock and difficult to blend with the sugar.
The perfect test is to gently press your finger into the stick of butter; it should leave an indentation but still hold its overall shape. This consistency is vital for creaming with sugar to incorporate air, which creates a light and fluffy cookie structure.

How Do I Store Leftover Santa’s Favorite Cookies?
The easiest and most effective way to store any leftover cookies (if you have any!) is to place them in a large, airtight container. Store them at room temperature on your counter. A large plastic bowl with a tight-fitting lid works perfectly, or a sturdy zip-top bag is also a great option to keep them fresh, soft, and delicious for several days.
What is the Correct Way to Measure Flour?
Measuring flour accurately is key to cookie success. The official and most recommended way is to spoon the flour into your measuring cup until it’s overflowing, then use a straight edge (like the back of a knife) to level off the excess. This method ensures that the flour isn’t packed too tightly into your measuring cup, which would inadvertently add more flour than the recipe calls for, potentially making your cookies dry and crumbly.
However, if you fluff your flour well with a spoon, then gently scoop the flour into the measuring cup without packing it down, and finally level it off, that method should also work beautifully for this particular recipe, yielding the desired soft and chewy texture.

How Many Cookies Does This Recipe Yield?
This recipe makes approximately 28 regular-sized cookies. This is a perfect batch for a family gathering, a small party, or for having enough to share. If you find yourself needing a smaller batch, perhaps for a quiet evening or just a treat for yourself, feel free to cut this recipe in half, adjusting all ingredients accordingly.
Why Do Ingredients Need to Be at Room Temperature?
Using room temperature ingredients is a crucial step that helps ensure everything blends together perfectly, creating a smooth, emulsified dough. You definitely want to avoid any pockets of unblended butter or other ingredients, as this can lead to an inconsistent texture in your final cookie.
When dairy products like butter and eggs are at room temperature, they can create a stable emulsion with the sugar. This emulsion is essential because it allows more air to be trapped in the mixture during the creaming process. As your baked goods cook, this trapped air expands, resulting in cookies that are light, fluffy, and have that wonderfully tender crumb everyone loves.
Santa’s Special Christmas Treats

Can This Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Be Doubled?
Yes, absolutely! You can easily double the dough for this recipe if you need a larger quantity. Doubling the recipe will make a WHOLE LOT of cookies – which is fantastic if you’re planning a bake sale, preparing treats for a large potluck, or hosting a big holiday party. I can almost guarantee that these delicious cookies will be gone in a flash, so a double batch is often a smart move!
Expert Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Ensure Proper Butter Consistency: For the dough to have the ideal consistency and for proper aeration during creaming, make sure your butter is truly at room temperature. It should be pliable and leave an indentation when pressed, but not be melted or greasy.
- Butter & Margarine Blend for Texture: The original recipe uniquely uses both butter and margarine. This combination helps the cookies hold together beautifully with a slightly cakey yet super buttery interior. While you can use all butter, be aware that the cookies might spread a bit more during baking, affecting their final thickness.
- Enhance Visual Appeal with Extra Toppings: For that “bakery-style” look, gently press extra M&M’s and even more chocolate chips onto the tops of the cookies immediately after they come out of the oven. The residual heat will slightly melt them, creating a beautiful, tempting finish.
- Avoid Overbaking for Chewy Centers: Do not overbake these cookies! They will continue to set and firm up as they cool on the baking sheet. To preserve those coveted soft, chewy centers and slightly crispy edges, take them out of the oven when the edges are lightly golden and the centers still look slightly underdone.
- Shape Dough Balls for Thickness: To achieve nice, thick cookies, ensure you roll your dough balls to be quite large and tall rather than flat. This encourages them to bake up with a beautiful dome and a rich, chewy texture.
- Address Spreading Issues Immediately: If your first batch of cookies spreads too much, it could be due to inaccurate flour measurement (too little) or butter that was too soft. Double-check your measurements and ensure the remaining dough is well-chilled and firm before baking subsequent batches. You can pop it back in the fridge for 15-30 minutes if needed.
- Use Cool Baking Sheets: Always place your unbaked cookie dough onto cool baking sheets. Placing dough on a warm or hot baking sheet will cause the butter to melt prematurely, leading to immediate spreading and inconsistent baking. Have a rotation of baking sheets ready so each one is at room temperature before you start placing dough on it.

HOW TO MAKE Santa’s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies: Step-by-Step
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the room temperature butter, margarine, packed brown sugar, and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This typically takes 2-3 minutes on medium speed.
- Add in the large egg and vanilla extract, then continue to beat until they are thoroughly incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, instant vanilla pudding powder (just the dry mix, do not prepare the pudding), baking soda, and salt. Start by slowly stirring to combine the dry ingredients without creating a cloud of flour, then beat on low speed until all ingredients are completely incorporated into a cohesive dough.
- Slowly stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Gently fold in half of the festive red and green M&M’s by hand.
- Remove the beater, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate the dough overnight (or for at least 8 hours). This chilling period is crucial for flavor and texture.
- The next day, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
- Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator. It will be quite firm. Roll the dough into uniform balls, approximately 2 tablespoons in size.
- Place the dough balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced a few inches apart.
- Bake the cookies for 9-12 minutes. Ovens vary, so watch them closely. Mine are usually perfect at 11 minutes – the edges should be lightly golden, and the centers should still look slightly soft.
- As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, immediately and gently press a few extra white chocolate chips and M&M’s onto the top of each warm cookie for an enhanced visual appeal.
- Leave the freshly baked cookies on the hot baking sheet for 5-10 minutes to cool and set slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Always start with a cold cookie sheet for each subsequent batch to ensure that the cookies bake consistently and prevent excessive spreading.
- Once completely cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain their softness and freshness for up to 3-5 days.

Should I Use Salted or Unsalted Butter for These Cookies?
I personally use whatever type of butter I happen to have on hand at the moment, and the cookies always turn out wonderfully. However, if you are mindful of your sodium intake, it’s generally recommended to stick with unsalted butter for these cookies, as it gives you more control over the overall salt content of the recipe.
I originally developed this recipe using unsalted butter. But, I’ve since tried it with salted butter on many occasions and genuinely liked the results just the same. So feel free to use your preference!
How Can I Achieve Thicker Chocolate Chip Cookies?
If your goal is to bake larger, gloriously thicker cookies, the key lies in the initial shaping of the dough. I recommend making the size of your dough balls more substantial before baking. Aim for at least 2 tablespoons (or even more!) of dough per cookie, which should yield a ball larger than a standard golf ball. This increased size allows the cookies to spread more slowly in the oven and helps them retain their shape better, ultimately resulting in a delightfully thicker and chewier cookie overall.

How to Soften Butter to Room Temperature Quickly and Effectively
First Method: The Patient Approach
The simplest way to soften butter (and any other ingredients that require room temperature) is to plan ahead. Take your butter out of the refrigerator and leave it on the counter for about 30 minutes to an hour while you gather and prep all your other ingredients for baking. I typically start by pulling everything I need out onto the counter, ensuring I have all necessary items before I’m midway through a recipe and realize I’m out of something. This method is the least risky for maintaining butter integrity.
However, sometimes it’s winter, and 30 minutes isn’t quite enough time for ingredients to warm up adequately. Or, let’s be honest, sometimes I’m just not that organized to plan so far ahead! It happens to the best of us. So, for those times, I have a couple of other handy tricks up my sleeve.
Second Method: The Microwave Trick (Use with Caution!)
For a quicker solution, I carefully place the butter, still wrapped in its paper (do NOT do this if it’s wrapped in foil!), into the microwave. I then microwave it for precisely 2 seconds, flip it over, go another 2 seconds, flip again, and continue this process, adding 2 seconds on each side. This methodical approach is usually enough to get it perfectly softened. Sometimes, I even stop before the full rotation if it feels soft enough to the touch. It’s absolutely crucial to take extreme care when using this method – overly softened or partially melted butter from the microwave WILL significantly alter the end result of your recipe, potentially leading to flat or greasy cookies. Don’t overdo it!
Third Method: The Warm Water Bath
My third tried-and-true method is to place the wrapped butter sticks into a zip-top bag (to protect it from water) and then submerge the bag in a bowl of warm (not hot!) water. I often use this trick for eggs as well. If the water is warm, but not scalding, this can be THE perfect way to quickly achieve genuinely “room-temperature” ingredients without any risk of melting or cooking them. It’s a gentle and effective solution for when time is of the essence.
