The Magic of Instant Pot Salmon: Perfectly Cooked Every Time

Cooking salmon in the Instant Pot is truly a revelation. The high-pressure environment ensures that each filet is cooked through to perfection, becoming wonderfully tender and flaky without drying out. This method is incredibly forgiving, making it ideal for those who might be intimidated by cooking fish. The Instant Pot seals in moisture and flavor, creating a consistently moist and flavorful result that’s hard to achieve with other cooking methods.
Commonly Asked Questions About Instant Pot Sesame Salmon
How to Store Leftover Salmon
Proper storage is key to enjoying your delicious salmon for a few days. Simply place any leftover salmon in an airtight container and refrigerate it promptly. It will maintain its quality for up to 3 days. To reheat, remove the lid of the container, add a small splash of water to create some steam, and place the lid back on loosely. Microwave on a medium setting until heated through, allowing the trapped steam to gently warm the salmon and keep it moist.
Can This Be Made in the Oven?
Absolutely! While this recipe shines in the Instant Pot, you can certainly adapt it for oven baking. You can follow my recipe for Garlic Butter Salmon for the baking method, but use the flavorful sesame sauce from this recipe instead. Just prepare the sesame sauce as instructed here, then pour it over your salmon filets in a foil packet. Bake according to the directions in the garlic butter recipe for a simple, easy, and equally delicious oven-baked sesame salmon.
Instant Pot Frozen Salmon: No Thawing Required!

One of the most incredible benefits of using your Instant Pot for salmon is the ability to cook it directly from frozen! This is a fantastic time-saver, perfect for those evenings when you forget to thaw dinner. Simply place your frozen salmon filets in the Instant Pot with the sauce and increase the cooking time by just 1-2 minutes. It’s incredibly simple and allows for delicious, healthy meals without any advance planning.
Sourcing the Best Salmon for Your Bowls
Living in Idaho, a landlocked state, means fresh, high-quality seafood isn’t always readily available. While we have excellent freshwater fish options, my family often craves ocean-fresh varieties like salmon. This challenge led me on a quest to find the best possible source for our favorite seafood.
Fortunately, a friend introduced me to Catch Sitka. This incredible service allows me to get Wild Alaskan Line-Caught Seafood delivered straight from the dock to my doorstep. It’s an incredibly easy and convenient way to ensure my family enjoys premium, sustainably sourced seafood, regardless of our remote location. The difference in quality and taste is truly remarkable, making every meal feel like a special occasion.

Living in a remote area offers peace and tranquility, but it also means grocery shopping isn’t always convenient. We don’t have local grocery delivery services, which is fine most of the time. However, being able to place orders through Catch Sitka and have exquisite seafood delivered right to our door, often with free shipping, is an absolute game-changer. This service eliminates the need for long drives or navigating icy roads to reach a market, making it simple, easy, and convenient to enjoy fresh, delicious seafood whenever we desire.
Plus, Catch Sitka Seafoods make a fantastic and thoughtful gift for family and friends who appreciate gourmet quality!
Understanding Your Instant Pot: Pressure Cooker vs. Electric Multi-Cooker
In today’s culinary landscape, the terms “pressure cooker” and “Instant Pot” are often used interchangeably, especially when referring to electric models. However, there’s a distinct difference between a traditional stovetop pressure cooker and an electric multi-cooker like the Instant Pot. A traditional pressure cooker is a sealed metal pot that rapidly cooks food using steam generated under increased atmospheric pressure, bringing its contents to a high boiling point.
The Instant Pot, conversely, is an electric-style pressure cooker that operates on the same core principle of pressure cooking but with several key advancements. It requires minimal liquid, is incredibly energy-efficient, and offers a significantly safer and more user-friendly experience than older stovetop models. Furthermore, Instant Pots come equipped with a multitude of other functions – including slow cooking, sautéing, steaming, and even yogurt making – solidifying their reputation as versatile kitchen workhorses perfect for quick and convenient meal preparation.
Health Benefits of Salmon: A Nutritional Powerhouse
Beyond its incredible taste and versatility, salmon is celebrated for its impressive nutritional profile. It’s a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which are crucial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation. Salmon also provides a substantial amount of high-quality protein, essential for muscle repair and growth, along with vital vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D, B12, potassium, and selenium. Incorporating salmon into your diet regularly is a delicious way to support overall wellness, making these Instant Pot Sesame Salmon Bowls not just a treat for your taste buds, but also a boost for your health.
Essential Ingredients for Instant Pot Sesame Salmon

Here’s what you’ll need to create this flavor-packed sesame salmon sauce:
- Soy sauce: Provides a rich, umami base.
- Water: Helps to create the perfect sauce consistency.
- Brown sugar or honey: Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the savory notes.
- Lime juiced: Offers a bright, acidic counterpoint that elevates all the flavors.
- Sesame oil: Contributes that distinctive nutty, aromatic sesame flavor.
- Garlic minced: Essential for depth and pungency.
- Ginger grated: Adds a warm, spicy, and fresh zest.
- Sesame seeds: For texture and an extra layer of sesame flavor.
- Cornstarch: Used as a thickener to create a luscious sauce.
- Sriracha: Provides an optional but recommended kick of heat.
- Center cut salmon filets: The star of our dish, chosen for their ideal thickness and richness.
Serving Suggestions: What to Pair with Your Sesame Salmon
The versatility of this Instant Pot Sesame Salmon means the possibilities for side dishes are endless. We love serving our salmon over fluffy white or brown rice, which perfectly soaks up the savory sauce. For a burst of freshness and color, consider adding a variety of vegetables like tender asparagus, crisp broccoli florets, sweet corn, or sautéed zucchini. A quick veggie medley, cooked alongside or separately, complements the salmon beautifully. You can also get creative with alternatives like quinoa, couscous, or even pad Thai noodles for a different twist. Don’t forget a sprinkle of fresh green onions or a wedge of lime for garnish!
Keep in mind that because this is pressure-cooked – factors like elevation can subtly influence the cooking time. Always check for doneness.
Demystifying “Natural Pressure Release” (NPR)
When cooking with an Instant Pot, you’ll often encounter instructions for pressure release, either “quick release” or “natural pressure release” (NPR). While quick release involves manually opening the steam valve immediately after the cooking cycle, NPR is a more gradual process. For recipes calling for a natural pressure release, you simply allow the Instant Pot to depressurize on its own, without touching the steam release valve for a specified amount of time. This extended period allows the food to continue cooking gently within the still-hot pot, ensuring a more tender and flavorful result, especially for delicate proteins like salmon. Once the natural release time is complete, you can then manually release any remaining pressure to safely open the lid and serve your perfectly cooked meal.
How to Make Instant Pot Sesame Salmon Bowls: A Step-by-Step Guide

Get ready to enjoy this incredibly simple and delicious Instant Pot Sesame Salmon:
- In the Instant Pot inner pot, whisk together all the sauce ingredients: soy sauce, water, brown sugar or honey, lime juice, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame seeds, cornstarch, and sriracha. Ensure everything is well combined (this is everything except the salmon).
- Gently add the center-cut salmon filets to the Instant Pot, making sure they are fully coated on all sides by the flavorful sauce. Position the salmon skin-side down.
- Secure the lid on your Instant Pot, set the valve to “Sealing,” and select the “Pressure Cook” (or “Manual”) setting for just 1 minute.
- Once the Instant Pot finishes its cooking cycle, perform a manual (quick) pressure release. Be cautious as the steam will be hot!
- Carefully remove the cooked salmon filets from the pot and set them aside.
- Turn the Instant Pot to the “Sauté” setting.
- Bring the remaining sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, until it has reduced and thickened to your desired consistency. This usually takes about 2 minutes.
- Spoon the rich, thickened sesame sauce generously over the salmon filets and serve immediately. Enjoy your perfectly cooked, flavorful salmon!
- Store any leftover salmon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.
Recipe Yield & Adjusting for Your Family
This particular recipe, as written, yields 2 salmon filets, making it ideal for two servings. However, its versatility allows for easy adjustment based on your needs. For a light lunch, you could easily divide one filet into smaller portions, effectively serving 4 people. If you’re cooking for a larger family or meal prepping, this recipe can be doubled with great success.
Scaling Your Recipe & Instant Pot Size

What size Instant Pot do you use for this recipe?
I typically use an 8-quart pot for my recipes, but this Instant Pot Sesame Salmon can also be perfectly prepared in a 6-quart pot. If you own a smaller version, like the 3-quart mini, I recommend halving the recipe to ensure optimal cooking and results.
Can this recipe be doubled?
Absolutely! If you’re cooking for more than two people, doubling this recipe is simple. You can place two pieces of salmon directly in the bottom of the pot, ensuring they are not overcrowded. For additional pieces, use a trivet (steamer rack) to elevate two more salmon filets above the first layer. To keep the upper salmon moist and tender, wrap them loosely in foil with a little bit of the sauce added inside the packet before pressure cooking. If your Instant Pot is large enough to fit all four pieces in a single layer at the bottom without overcrowding, that method works wonderfully too.
